If you live in a pretty large European city, it's very likely that you've seen a fast grocery delivery company like Getir, Gorillas or Flink. What may stand out is their presence everywhere, be it through their riders or their advertising that you may have even seen before watching this video.
We try to unpack what these companies are, the value proposition they offer, why you see them everywhere, and why they have grown so fast in Europe.
Chapters:

02:30 | Incentives of Venture Capital

About us:
The videos are made by one person, but we have a website where there's a lot of other content that is produced with a team:
We are a team of Europeans trying to create European media platform. We publish a lot of other European related content created by Europeans on our website (www.romuluseurope.eu).
There's a couple of core principles that we try and follow with all our content. It's important to note that these are of course slightly different depending on the medium (article or video):
1. No pretentious (attempting to impress) writing. We write how we speak.
2. No wasting your time. We focus on clarity, always.
3. No hidden bias. Everyone is biased, but not everyone is open about it. We will always be clear about our hidden motivations.
4. Our articles must be between 800 and 1,200 words.
5. Our ideas must be clearly extractable, and outlined writing is encouraged not avoided.*

Correction: Graph in the last scene should be Q1 - 2019 through Q1 - 2021. Heyo, I've published the script and sources here: www.romuluseurope.eu/youtube/insaneriseoffastgrocerydelivery/ Something really important to note for the overexposed internet generation: there is literally no reason you should trust me. I am a biased, emotional human being that is a victim of confirmation bias just like you. If you follow the link above, you'll see some sources, the full script, and also an elaboration of my ideas that explains whether I've made a value judgement. Please remain skeptical of the content I produce.

Well made content. I'm a South African and it is very much the case that most content is American. Very refreshing to see euro content. As for this video, it does strike me as odd that logistics (e-commerce, food delivery, scooter/car /bike share) startups are valued so highly

I hope you guys keep it that way. As the video mentions; the companies make use of existing infrastructure. Cities like amsterdam are therefore getting more and more crowded by delivery bikers clogging up the streets. This is not a good development in my eyes. Besides that, it’s not like dutch students are driving these bikes. Most times it’s exchange students that are much more vulnerable to the gig job market.

I have a Gorillas Station nearby. The employees are stressed, overworked, and a danger to themselves and others because the time pressure makes them bike recklessly. I’ve downloaded all the quick grocery delivery apps because they all offer ongoing discount codes which can only be explained by huge influxes of VC. This is very similar situation to when ride sharing apps were all competing heavily and offering free rides. Now half of those companies are defunct. It’s sort of the magic time for the consumer before consolidation rises prices again. Now Uber in London often costs more than the Black Cabs they set out to disrupt.

I find this somewhat interesting because of the fact that in Croatia I haven't seen a single one of the mentioned companies, I didn't even know they existed. Here the market is dominated by Glovo, Wolt and Bolt in that order (perhaps Bolt is bigger than Wolt I'm not sure), but apart from that the other things you mentioned are strikingly the same. There's marketing everywhere for them and you constantly see delivery people on bikes in the city. The only major difference is that from what I know they're mostly used for food delivery (i.e. from restaurants or fast food), I don't think many people use them for grocery delivery.

A channel by a European that focuses on European issues. As an American, it is really refreshing to finally get a good look at what things are like over there. From what I've experienced through all my time on the internet, the story seems to have been unchanging: you all know plenty of what goes on over here due to our media blasting our happenings all over the globe to absolutely everyone, but you all are rather quiet and don't really share much of what goes on there. The videos are really succinct and pleasant to watch too, which is always cool to see. I look forward to seeing more of you in the future, and I'm gladly subscribed now. It's nice to see these delivery services are rapidly growing across the world, and it's some different startup companies trying to capitalize on this rather than the tech giants trying to monopolize it. Here in Indonesia, fast grocery delivery already become the norm for years (and in some metro areas actually becomes the need for people). It helps the economy so much and benefits a lot of small businesses. We have some big players here that are competing, such as Gojek, Grab, Shopee, and some other startups. And yeah, the competition here is very tough.

Fast Grocery Delivery has been a trend in China and South East Asian countries long before the pandemic began (as early as 2015). Like many technological innovations in the recent years Europe is actually lagging behind, and technology executives, startup founders, and investors travel to China and SEA to get some ideas. Some of the innovations that launched in the east long before Europe has adopted them are fully-mobile banks, cross-platform payments app and fast grocery delivery.

So this is very similar to all the ride sharing companies that seemingly make no money ....they're just in a race with each other to see who will be the last one left, and then they can raise prices drastically, with nobody left to compete.

I've already seen so many ads from Gorillas, and watching this video probably wasn't helping me to get rid of them, lol. Regardless, I am digging your style and voice! I can tell this channel will become very successful in the near future!

Love the informations you dug out. I personally don’t like them. I dislike that we pay so much for delivery services. It’s not true that we save time. We just waste it somewhere. Mostly on the phone. we are getting closer and closer to a utopia. All hail the shiny rectangle

I still don't understand how those companies work. I work at Flink and I have calculated that even if they just wanted to pay me my salary, they would have to have 3-4 € of profit on every single order, which is definitely not the case. To keep the whole system running and to pay all other employees, they would most likely make a profit of ~6€ per order. So how exactly do they make money? I still fail to realize that

Self-professed hardcore Introvert that I am, I look forward to going out and getting my own takeout, my own groceries, making (painful?) eye contact/chitchat with strangers, and being out in the world. I rarely use delivery services except on either on days with miserable weather or I'm truly bloody exhausted, and even then I feel guilty, I feel like its a waste.

its similiar to how people stopped going to malls to buy things and rather just buy it online. the next logical step is to have food delivered right to your door instead of going to grocery store yourself.

I wonder if those types of buissneses are viable without the gig economy, which is absolute shite and inhumane. It's interesting to see if the gig economy would become regulated, as it slowly is, will those sort of firms go away or adapt.

I would assume that the company that survives would try to automate it if the gig economy lobbied for better conditions. Euro cities (as an American at least) seem safe enough that such vehicles wouldn't be fucked with, although it's all speculative tech

Your channel really reminds me of a german KZbin channel named Simplicissimus, or their english channel Reasy. Just that your channel is more focused on politics than companys.

We got Uber Eats, Deliveroo, Just Eat and others like it aswell. The companies in this vid are more akin to online supermarket, though with 'shops' throughout the city, where the delivery people collect the deliveries, with a promise to deliver those goods within 10 mins after ordering.

I think the main reason for the growth in this industry has to be the Covid 19 pandemic. When people were being discouraged from leaving their own homes unless strictly necessary, many of them ordered take out and grocery deliveries as it was the safer option. They noticed how convenient it was and ended up sticking with the practice once their lives opened up again.

Spot on, Jemini, and this is only the start of massive changes which will be taking place over the next few years. Thousands of shops and businesses have been permanently shut down, and AI/AGI will be replacing many of our jobs as well. The future does not look good. Stay well.
