The Rattling Clouser Fly - A Prospecting Fly Variant of the Classic Clouser Pattern

The Clouser Minnow, be it shallow or deep, is one of the greatest fly fishing flies ever invented. Yeah, that is MY opinion. But if you want to add some zing, or create a more deadly Clouser, if that is even possible? Try adding a rattle to it! I've been tying clousers like this for the Brazos-Whiney dam for about 10 years now. A little trick-- on the back of the mylar drop a big glob of epoxy in it and let it "bleed" through the material, to anchor it in the mylar and lock in the rattle. On my first dozen or so designs I found that the rattle was breaking, being slapped on whatever shwag was behind you. The glue glob on the back will help absorb the beating instead of directly on the brittle glass rattle. Also use smaller rattles. They make some that will fit snugly in those mylar tubes. I stopped using baitcasting rattles pretty early for this reason.

I like this idea..bring in some sound. Thanks for showing it. I was in local flyshop yesterday (Fredericksburg) and told the owner I’ve tied hundreds of different flies, too many decisions, and might just go back to the proven basics that you mentioned, Clousers and Woolys. @@Texasflycaster Thanks for the reply Shannon. It’s a small but good shop..Country Flyfisher. Martin Pursch owns and runs it, behind his residence on Goehman Lane in Fredericksburg. I just got started tying flies 3 years ago and didn’t know about it after living here for years! My wife works at a bank and told me about it. Martin’s a great guy, he’s 86 and doesn’t fish much anymore, but ties great flies and is an encyclopedia of information. Nice build! Cabelas carries different rattle size options in the crappie fishing area.

Good Info! These sizes at BP were limited. Were a 5mm and a 4mm .

Use flexo tube material and just melt the end with a lighter. Feed the tube onto the shank of the hook and tie in. Bullet proof.
