The biggest weakness of Rayman is that it's tonal undecidedness allowed the Rabbids to subsume him into a far larger franchise for tiny babies, what is pretty much the Minions of gaming.

Would be interesting to see an Origins/Legends video. It's interesting to see how they tried to combine all three aesthetic aspects of these games while also giving different names to the characters and elements of this world but trying to convince us it's the same from these older games (Bubble Dreamer being Polokus from Rayman 2), and how those games have acquired this almost legendary status as 2D Platformer Greats.
@Kriss_ch.Сағат бұрын
I think Rayman Origins is awesome, and Legends isn't far behind besides some specific annoyances to me at least, but I guess there's gotta be another decade before the nostalgia wave hits on those and people start making hour long videos on them. I definitely don't get the idea they care about the setting more than the earlier games did either, lol.
@hugh553027 минут бұрын
Yeah I was hoping those games would be included too. For me they’re among the best 2D platformers ever made in terms of gameplay, but I don’t really like the aesthetics and music.

Playing Rayman 3 as a kid, I remember it taking me hours to psyche myself up to play each bit of the Knaaren level. Absolutely terrifying. I remember sitting in that pit where you have to use a rocket to hit a gong, scared witless and all I could hear was stuff like "pull out his nails" and "spit in his eyes" accompanied by the occasional roar. It's stayed as one of my top 5 games of all time though. Love Rayman 3 so much

That first Rayman game actually can't hide the fact it's a platformer made in Europe: massive and detailed graphics with brutal, labyrinthic level design packed in a generally whimsical-nonsense aesthetic, it's the type of stuff you used to see on the Amiga all the time (and the unfortunate console ports that got released as well)
@Kriss_ch.50 минут бұрын
If we're comparing platforming devs, I definitely feel Rayman is closer to Rare's work than guys like Naughty Dog or Insomniac, probably just thanks to Europe lol. Donkey kong Country, Donkey Kong 64, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Banjo-Kazooie, _Kameo_ or whatever. They spread it over more franchises but I think they went through a lot of the same stuff as Rayman, and they definitely had the same sorta super heavy texture work aesthetic going on in the 64 era. Rayman 3 is in a league of its own though, I haven't seen anyone else do that look that well.

I'm always a bit annoyed when people talk about Rayman 2: The Great Escape, but never mention it's "upgrade" Rayman 2: Revolution for the PS2. Seriously, a lot of the criticisms (especially the one about the overworld, which is completely removed in Revolution irked me). I know you said you played the one on the N64 so the criticism is valid for that version, but I just really love Revolution for the PS2 and hope you'll give it a shot.

I was scavenging for games with my bro last year and happened upon my original copy of Rayman 2 that I’d sold like 17 years ago. Bought it because I’d always wanted to beat it and… it sure was a game. So I put on Rayman 3 after beating 2 and ended up playing through the whole thing in one sitting. Rayman 3 has been one of my all time favorites since I was a kid. Wish more people knew about it.
@misterzygarde64314 сағат бұрын
I’ll just say that those who want to play Rayman 1 should just play the unofficial Rayman Redemption because it actually has fair difficulty compared to the original. I will say that I think it’d be cool if the Rabbids returned as enemy turned buddies to Rayman similar to King Dedede from Kirby. Like imagine the Rabbids in a similar role to Dedede in Kirby’s Adventure where they’re trying to stop the true villain.

Please look up some rayman 3 combo videos. You will be amazed at how much the scoring system synnergizes with the 3d platforming in this one. I put about 200 hours into scoring and it was an amazing experience. (Annoying to retry combos only start at 700K total score, so i dont recommend going past that) I swear to dog the scoring in this game, past a certain point of mastery feels like bayonettas combat somewhat lol
@pawlogates4 сағат бұрын
One example: rolling feels useless right? But in scoring the roll move becomes a very useful tool as you can reach a jevel JUST before the timer runs out, and you wouldnt reach it in time without rolling. Also rolling off a ledge gives you a speed boost. There is so much hidden shit in this game gameplay-wise, and most of it is well hidden in the level design.

Something also to consider is how tonal shifts in the absence of the digital age was a very confusing concept, especially from the consumer perspective. Jak and PoP going edgy felt forecasted even if it wasn't necessarily agreed upon. Picking up Rayman 2 I was completely certain there was some comic or tv show I missed that filled in the unexplainable gaps.

Not sure if it gets mentioned later on in the video, but Rayman Revolution (the "enhanced" PS2 port) actually does replace the level select with an actual hub world you move around to get to each of the original's main levels.
@TheGamingBritShow3 сағат бұрын
I saw that! But it doesn't really fix any of the problems I mentioned. It's basically just another bunch of portals. I'm basically using "level select" and "hub world" synonymously in this video.

Rayman Legends being my first Rayman game (which I still love as a game) meant a slightly jarring experience when I jumped to Rayman 3 for the first time. Slightly because the silly humor was still there, but I was still surprised that not only did they talk, but they DID have a story to tell.

what a pleasant surprise! especially as a big fan of rayman 1, it's rare to hear much talk about that game other than "its looks pretty" and "it's hard". you skimmed over origins/legends at the end of the video, do you have any plans to talk about these in the future? i always thought they were good games but there has always something slightly off about them. they have a level of quality that makes them feel as though they should be a staple in any discussion of platformers and yet there's something about them that just doesn't stick, like you said they came and went.

It's strange to think of Mario as a "strong character" but I guess he, and many other Nintendo mains, really are in the sense that they always promise a specific tone and attitude. The change from Wario Land 1 to Wario Land 4 is pretty extreme - Never mind Wario Ware. But you can largely expect the same general tone across all of the games, it's not like Wario suddenly starts rapping or gets a goatee or something just 'cause that's in the wind at the time of development. The biggest difference you get is whether the devs want him to be strong, or if they want him to be gross. The largest change-up is usually when the devs switch. Donkey Kong's personality is always the same, but Rare Donkey Kong Country and Retro Studios Donkey Kong Country isn't the same at all. I dunno how the teams on the Rayman titles were set up, but it'd be interesting to look at those credits and see who came along from game to game - I wouldn't be surprised at all if it changed a ton every time.

I never played the original Rayman on PS1. Knowing how obnoxious its difficulty was is a colossal deterrent for me. The closest I ever got to it was a really middling GBC port of the first game that I became so disenchanted with I just gave it to one of my childhood friends. I did religiously play 2 and 3 though throughout my childhood and I loved them without compromise......but in my most recent run of 3, time has not been at all kind to it. I know it's over 20 years old by this point so in due time, flaws are bound to shine through. But when it gets to the point where it effects how well the game even fuckin functions, that's a major red flag.

There's a free fanmade version of Rayman 1 with some rebalancing for some of the most unbalanced screens and modernized features (bonus levels, cosmetic unlockables and achievements. It keeps the soul and feel of the original really well and I would say is the best way to play Rayman now.

Dude I cant believe it took 20 years until someone finally dedicated more than 20 seconds to by far the best part of rayman 3 (scoring). Everything else gameplay wise is mid in r3 (except movement) but scoring transforms this game from a 6/10 to something which is both insanely unique and by some weird miracle, also very well designed and tested, and... for some reason trying very hard to make people not even try to engage with it :/ Im actually in the middle of trying to expand on this scoring system in my own game, which is sadly pretty much canceled until my long covid disappears but its been 8 months so far so idk might be forever lol (not funny 😭). Please look up some r3 combo vids. I also heavily recommend replaying it for at least 500K total score. It will give you most of the hidden scoring experience. This scoring system legitimately kind of ruined other 3d platformers for me, and I dont mean ""ruined"" like just I kinda wish it was there. It feels like every single 3d platformer has a gaping hole in its gameplay now. If you replay this game for scoring a few times, its undeniably a huge and unique success which never being expanded upon should be considered a crime against gaming lol
