I find those pieces of tech history so interesting. It did made sense to have a novelty on their consoles as a selling point, but at the time, considering the arcades, and their competitor Atari, there was a good precedent to figure removing the joystick to replace it with a numberpad wasn't a great move 😅 kids wanted to feel like playing arcades at home, but this looks like an answering machine lol I thought at first glance that was a knockoff of the intellivision, but it actually was released a year later, in 79. I guess they learnt some of the mistakes of this one and actually had a controller with a weird disk d-pad and the numberpad again, which looked just as uncomfortable to use.

I agree, a joystick would have probably made this a great seller. Being one of the "first" to implement a cartridge was pretty novel. Too bad they didn't have the whole package. I remember the intellivision "joystick". It was a bit awkward, but still a way better idea than, like you said, playing on your "answering machine". That's pretty funny!

Filling in the gaps: RCA passed on the opportunity to buy the rights to the Odyssey and were thoroughly salty that Magnavox (then a competitor, especially in TV sales) was having success. So they set to work creating something similar using their in-house developed microprocessor and video IC. The clunky switchbox was in response to the FCC shooting down an earlier market release due to excessive RF leakage.

If this will help, you'll need a "tv female coaxial push on adapter" that will fit your modern tv if it has a coaxial rf input. It also has two screws to connect the switchbox prongs to. If your modern tv doesn't have a coaxial, you'll need an rf to hdmi converter.

Thanks for the info. I appreciate it! I no longer have this unit, but will keep it in mind for the future. Maybe someone who doesn't know will see your comment and be helped out as well.
