EPIC! Just EPIC! Very well done sir! I loved the show back in the day. For me it was Star Trek The Next Generation but in the ocean. The Sea Quest was such a unique sub. It is such a shame we never really got a lot of toys, models or replicas of it which makes this top tier project so special. Thank you again and very well done!

Seaquest started to come apart after season 2. A number of the actors including Roy Schider all wanted more money to come back, then they decided on a complete direction change moving the series to a more military focused format. After that Dr Bob Ballard said he wasn’t going to do any more after ocean science segments while the credits rolled. And a number of actors wanted out. After that they moved into a more military focused season 3 and viewership tanked. They made the decision midway through season 3 to kill the show and seaquest DSV was gone. It didn’t help that sometimes sporting events running over or post game stuff would push it to air at 3am some nights. It was a good show at tbe start but like all good TV medaling by networks wanting more “ action” kills more procedural shows like seaquest DSV

Beautiful and brings a lot of memory. I was in my early teens when the show first aired and my sister had a celebrity crush with the resident handsome actor. I sculpted a model of the DSV from a small piece of wood with a cheap folding knife. This was back before the internet is a thing my country so I had to sculpt it from memory. I found the model/sculpture several years back I was surprise that I was able to get the general shape right back then. Really, that was first and only time I sculpted something in my teens with that flimsy 20 cent knife. And now I have a 3D printer which I bought on a whim last year because I wanted to build and print submarines from the video games Diluvion and Subnnautica. Sadly...I got sidetrack printing toys for my nephews and projects for school.

Okay that is just cool! It looks like it is about twice as large as the kit I bought in the 90's. I got 3 of the 4 that were issued, Seaquest, Lucas' mini sub, and Darwin. I missed out on the mining sub. (I still have them too) I do wonder if Lucas' mini sub could be made as an RC craft. I understand the sub that was shown as his competitor in the race episode is an actual minisub you can buy or rent now. Making the swimming action would be tricky though. Very cool!

Question: subs are referred to boats but since seaquest carried a compliment of helper submersibles wouldn’t she technically be classified as a ship
@qdllc5 ай бұрын
Surface vessels over a given mass are called ships. The ability to carry other craft isn’t required. Submersibles have always been called boats. Don’t know why.

I'm not a water RC guy, so forgive me if this is an ignorant question: is there a bow thruster system that would work and make turning better? Nice model!
@RCSubGuy6 ай бұрын
There are systems available. The room in this boat is quite limited, however. I'm sure it could be done, but it would be challenging in such a small model. Additionally, thrusters are only really effective when the boat is stationary, not while under speed.

83" hull is printing now, but that is for a friend. Even at those larger scales, the WSKRS would be too tiny to function. Maybe it could pop them out and let them float to the surface. Much better to think about a scale functional speeder IMO.

0:40 800 miles long? Where'd you come up with that number? I thought you might have meant meters, or didn't know the difference between a mile & a meter... but the sub wasn't 800 meters in the show either. The "seaQuest DSV 4600" is canonically 1007 feet long (307 meters). For comparison, a Nimitz-class nuclear aircraft carrier is 332.8 meters long overall, or 317 meters at the waterline. SeaQuest DSV is thus 10 meters (33 feet) shorter than the waterline of a modern Nimitz-class carrier. To compare to modern submarines, the Ohio-class missile submarine is 170 meters long, and the Project 941 Akula (Typhoon-class) missile subs were 175 meters long.

I'm pretty sure this will have several problems if you try using it in sea-water. (Sea water is conductive, which means all the places where electronics is exposed to sea water, it'll short-circuit - well, sort of, it'll just use lots and lots of power and resistors values will be completely off. Conductive sea-water will also bring in another problem: You can't send radio-signals through to sea water, because it's conductive). -The first problem, where electronics is exposed to the water could easily be solved, but the second one, I'd be happy to hear if anyone has a solution. 😉
@RCSubGuy5 ай бұрын
Perfectly fine in salt water, provided extra care is taken to waterproof connections. You'll need to run an antenna above the surface for wireless control.
