This year I finally learned to DNF and I have been able to read so many books that I enjoy. I don't know why I ever thought I had to finish a book once started. There are so many books and precious little time. Great tag, Greg!

Thanks for the tag, Greg! I also tagged our whole Joyce group! I’ve had the same issues with the “news.” I’m feeling better now about shutting it out, but it’s been a struggle, for sure. I know your cats do interrupt and distract you, but they sure are wonderful! I’m glad that we’re making our way through Ulysses together! Great tag, Greg. I found this one really thought-provoking, and I enjoyed hearing your responses to the prompts.

Your approach to Joyce's Ulysses sounds perfect: better to enjoy the ride, the play with language and sound, then force yourself to catch everything (that would just slow down the flow of the experience). When reading for ourselves we don't need to become experts (leave that for the teachers). I'm curious, you mention not annotating your books, so what is the benefit for you of physical books compared to ebooks? I find ebooks more convenient in every way except for the lack of being able to annotate quickly and easily, so that's what keeps me tethered to physical copies. And just so you know, Emmelie actually co-created the tag with me (and was the one who came up with all the questions, I just participated in answering them).

I fixed Emmelie as co-creator in the video description. I usually read Kindle books or listen to audiobooks nowadays even though I own a huge physical library. The Kindle is just easier to read with the adjustable font size. I still buy vintage books or used physical books. The last time I bought a new release as a physical book was to celebrate independent bookstore day. This was a great tag. I have been enjoying all the versions.

Great discussion Greg! I’m hit or miss at annotation. Certain editions will never be annotated. Sometimes if I’m reading a classic for a group discussion, I might buy a used and cheap, paperback edition specifically for annotating. I’ve also been using my Kindle Scribe for this. I wish I could write notes in the margins of a kindle book, but the note taking and notebook sections are decent. For handwriting 😂 I have started using the calligraphy pen choice and it makes my handwriting always more fun to look at!

The calligraphy font improves my handwriting. I’m guessing the software needs to interpret order to make it look right.

I don't annotate my books, but sometimes if I have a lot of thoughts, I'll jot them down when I finish the book in a sort of "review." That way when I look back over my journal, I'll remember my impressions of the book.

Thanks Don. I’m experimenting with jotting down ideas for a project next year. Did the I book I sent ever arrive?

Great tag! My phone is not a distraction because I mostly ignore and turn it on silent. I have a small circle of friends and family who can leave messages, the rest is sales, insurance companies and other crap. Replace your cat with our dog and then you have my problem. Might be "fun" to try and read Ullyses in future, probably...possibly...no. I want to have fun in my autumn years without tackling difficult books that I probably won't like. Even if I do like them think of the time and energy commitment. Agreed. I cannot stand purchasing a book with annotated notes or underlined text, so frikken irritating. I would consider using note tabs. I have done enough reading in my life where the focus was on education. now I mostly read for entertainment and pleasure. My goal on goodreads went from 150 to 120 to 100 😂 I think I will stick with that! I really need to get better at DNFing books. I would love to have a chat with you on my channel, let me know!

I don't mind writing in my books but I understand how people don't like getting books with writing in it (myself included weirdly enough), I do like the idea of putting a numbered tab in the book and writing on a notepad, maybe I'll give that a shot 😁 I myself have a reading journal but would love to be more thourough with writing in it! This is a pretty cool tag Greg

There's no such thing as a patient cat. This I have learned. My favorite is when they paw at the book you're reading.
