I know what you mean by purple prose - too much of it can detract from the story, used sparingly it can add depth. Though it can be refreshing change when reading movie novelisations - such as Revenge of Sith by Matt Stover. My favourite term is 'anaesthetic writing' a phrase I think was used by George Orwell.
