GB2016 was a terrible idea. 1. the original relied a great deal on the chemistry of the actors, three of whom were well known for their comedic chops. By contrast, the only lead people knew was Melissa McCarthy whose fanbase skewed very female. 2. The decision to reboot the series such that the team that everyone loved never existed. And THEN the actors reprise their roles as different character JUST TO RUB IT IN YOUR FACE! 3. Selecting Paul Feig, a man whose movies can only appeal to women (except for perhaps the McCarthy spy parody that had Jason Statham in it) to reboot a franchise with traditionally male leads and audience (although some women were fans as well). 4. Apparently, director Paul Feig was bullied as a child and made the Kevin character as his f*** you to those more masculine men. This counterpart to Jeannine from the original was a one note character with no depth and just BEGGING to have a twist like he was actually smart but people only liked him for his looks and thus he hide his intellect. Basically a modern day and male version of Hedy Lamarr. NOPE! Kevin is just an idiot. Heck, was there a single likeable man in the movie? 5. Letting Feig (seeing a pattern here) pop off on the fans he NEEDED to support the big budget movie he was making. This wasn't Bridesmaid made for 35 million that can survive on just women BUT a 150+ million reboot of a movie that skews male. They needed to NOT honk off men so he proceeded to do that very thing. Looks like the major players involved have all been busted back down to the B-leagues where the can make movies for the audience they have and make some money while beloved franchises are spared.

The MAJOR failing of GB16 was the cheer misunderstanding of the elements of the Ghostbusters. Look at how it was broken down: 1: Involvement of several SNL cast/comedy actors 2: Ad-libbed in places 3: Ambiguity of equipment function 4: Treating authority like shit 6: Authority treating characters like shit 7: Big monster at end Of all of this, Feig couldn't grasp something Ivan got from the start: Chemistry. One of the major things people don't grasp with Ivan Reitman is that Ivan had an interest in horror movies. From what I understand, the original Ghostbusters was shot like a horror movie. The lighting, the angles, the props for the terror dogs, the arms coming out of Dana's chair, all of that shit was done legit horror movie style. Mr. Stay Puft was built to be a legit threat and that's why it was so damn hilarious: They were playing this whole thing straight. Look at GB16 and how everything was shot. Bright lighting, vivid colors, blatantly absurd and flat jokes, and constant. _Fucking. _*_TALKING._* Feig never let the scene have oxygen. The tension of the original made the whole thing funny. With a constant barrage of noise coming from the actors it never let any build up. It was like Feig took the whole mayor's office scene from the original and the Gramercy Mansion scene from Ghostbusters II and just made that the whole movie's dialogue. In addition, Feig just took the elements I listed above and just them into the pot, cranking the heat without reading the baking instructions. Then the controversy. 🙄The short version of that was Feig getting stupid amounts of hubris because he got a major franchise name under his belt. The name was something special and thought it would be a hit either way. If anything, they started treating it like a battle cry. The Studio thought the majority of Americans and people in general would just _love to see it!_ All females kicking ass and taking... I can't. They tried to take a movie about ghosts and cool tech and turned it into anti-masculine propaganda. That was Hollywood thinking we had been conditioned to love anything with an old name attached to it as well as being stupid enough to be insulted and like it. Now enter Jones. She saw the play being enacted and saw how she could use it for her racial shit. If anything happened to any of these people, it was because their own hubris, and Jones is one of the larger offenders. Wanna know how petty these people were? Feig started having all of these dumbass actors reshoot scenes just to own the "haters"... or as I like to call them,, NORMAL PEOPLE, it cost the production more time and money just so they can troll the trolls. Yeah, that went like the the scent of asparagus in someone's Tang. No matter how bad Jones thinks the whole racism she received was, she was dumb enough to engage in it thinking she was a protected individual. No one is safe. You make yourself a target, expect it. The whole deal here is that these people thought they had power and once to show how talentless you are, no amount of sympathy demands are going to change you are only using it for gain and to show false allegiance to a cause. AKA using feminism as a shield, or in Jones' case, feminism and racism. She got what she got because she challenged Doing it with a cloud storage drive full of her noodles didn't express anything other than the sheer faith she has in her own status as a marginalized person to supposedly stop bad things from happening I guarantee she only had at most 100 people fucking with her. 100 out of 7 billion people on earth. That's not enough to call the whole world racist. It's like those tards that don't understand that just because you put anti-gun laws in a city the criminals weren't gonna abide by them anyway. If anything, now they know Granny ain't packin' so it's fair game to rob people. A law or societal norm being written down or existing isn't going to physically stop someone from doing the misdeed. There's a reason cops exists: to *enforce* the law. just saying racism is bad doesn't mean its gonna stop. That's like being a well known anti-gun advocate to a community and still carrying anyway because you know the laws are fucked. You know what you want is a failed premise from the gate, but maybe that's the point. You're taunting these people to victimize you so you have something to cry about. Jones getting her stuff hacked and making public statements that don't mesh with the actual fandom just shows she was in for the clout. Why a book? "Wah wah, bad things happened to me, _buy my book!"_ It was all for the money. The whole movie was to force people to rewrite our memories and take trite ideological shit as entertainment all while shoveling praise and money onto it. These people wanted to be hailed as saviors and have their name be placed in glory all while doing no fucking real work. Boy, I could only imagine how pissed Paul and Leslie were when no one cared and were actively refusing to bend the knee. You may got a book deal, Jones, but it'll be the last. They may have given you an advance on the book deal, but it'll be the only money you get for your bullshit. Those books will make great kindling in my stove when winter comes around, and believe me, I'll get them for free in the dumpster behind Walmart.

It's a horrible movie. Paul Feig and McCarthy probably took the worst of fan hate...not Jones. They antagonized fans online. None of them could keep their mouth shut and walk away...and while we're at it...Let's talk about the misandry around Ghostbusters 2016...the dumb blonde has been a dead stereotype since WKRP in the 70s...but they went there with the lead male character. Not to mention, the other misandrist imagery and anti-male stereotypes that appear in the film. It's a very ugly bigoted film. It deserves to be on the ash pile of film history.

The one good thing to come out of this film is that Sony was smart enough to step over it and go, "Alright, we screwed up with that one." Disney and the rest of Hollywood could learn something from that.

the way I understood it (because I FORCED myself to watch that piece of garbage film) was it was an alternate universe retelling. The original crew weren't even playing their original characters, while the new film was a continuation of the 80s films, having the main cast be Egon's grandkids. No way could the 2016 one be associated to it, that would have ruined a good film making it any other way.

The crap about Jones getting doxed and 'harassed' is all overblown to make her a victim. Jones had been saying racist crap on her comedy (if you want to call it that) and her social media accounts years before 2016, so that's BS. They were calling ANY criticism of her bad acting (and it was BAAAAAD), and any clap backs to her hot takes "harassment", so that can be anything. As far as doxing goes, I want receipts besides some MSM article or Jones herself saying it happened because I've been calling BS on that shit for years. Truth is, they made a trash movie that a vast majority of people (especially fans of the original) hated, they wanted to blame someone for the mess, so they blamed the fans because it was an easy scapegoat and they could tie "current year" crap to it. Leslie Jones is picking at scabs now because 7 years later she's languishing in the realization of her irrelevance and is desperately trying to guilt people into liking her.

To make a Ghostbusters film you need to at least reference the original team. Spengler, Stantz, Venkman and Zeddemore ARE the Ghostbusters and Afterlife was a beautiful tribute to Harold Ramis as well as Egon's character and the sacrifice he made. At it's core, Ghostbusters is about heart and friendship. The Paul Feig movie was about lousy jokes, McCarthy chewing up the scenery and emasculating Chris Hemsworth for some cheap laughs. None of it worked.

You hit it on the head. Excellent "KZbinr side note". What is she talking about?! Winston was the "everyone" in Ghostbusters. The person who simply got a job and was like... WTF?! Same reaction I had when I became a roofer, and unbeknownst to me, part of the job is carrying entire bundles of shingles up a ladder to a second floor roof. Again, Winston was the "everyone" with an excellent portrayal of the universal "WTF". He didn't joke about the universe he was in, he joked within it. Didn't drink the Kool aide, but he held a cup .. Leslie was horrible in the 2016 version. Despite the trash of bad directing and the flaming dumpster of plot, there were some standouts and good moments where acting persevered above the dregs of a script. But Leslie was not even close to any of that. I'm sorry and ashamed for my country that she received bigoted comments. That's just unacceptable. That, however, is not why the movie bombed. That is not why it was rejected. I saw the film, and at no point was there anyone's opinion blocking me from seeing it. It just sucked. Plain and simple. The acting was shit, the plot was shit, the character arcs were non-existent, story was dull and predictable, plot had no "hook" to keep the audience invested, and the cameos, despite the real world expense, felt cheap. Leslie, I feel for you. You willing took a paycut to be in a franchise that could literally print money and should have been a massive success. But it was garbage. As a fan of the franchise for decades, I didn't expect much... but that movie gave nothing aside from retcons, misused legacy actors, trite storytelling, deplorable action, and nothing even remotely immersive.

Perhaps so much crap wouldn't get pushed out that way If you open your box set, you'll find a digital download for the out of universe 2016 movie.
@jeremyrichard2722 Жыл бұрын
I will say something edgier than most things I write. It really bugs me when you have actors who sign on for works based on existing IPs and franchises who don't even bother to familiarize themselves with the source material, sometimes being encouraged not to, and then act like victims when the fans get upset, claiming "it's just a job". Especially when someone of those people are extremely vocal, and even seem proud, of their ignorance of the source material, and act outright disrespectful of the fan base. They then act offended at the backlash and when their production fails, oftentimes failing to have their brain cells fire enough to realize that the entire purpose of using an existing property is to get the attention of that fan base. If you do that, and then give them something they actively hate, including your attitude, then you cannot blame this for happening. Look at it this way, let's say some rich jerk with cancer decides to rent The Mona Lisa like in "The Glass Onion" and then hires you, a world class scat artist, to come to the island and slap globs of your shit onto it, so he can put this on the internet as he thinks it's a profound statement of some sort and wants to end his time on the mortal coil on that note. You take his money and do this. Do you really think you don't deserve backlash for defiling one of humanity's greatest and most famous artworks, simply because you were a professional, and that guy thought he was making some kind of statement by you doing it. "Oh don't hate me" you proclaim "I merely was working for a million dollars, I might have ruined perhaps the most famous painting of all time with my feces, but it was entirely professional. Blame the rich guy who hired me, I was just taking a job, and nobody should be blamed for simply working right? This was simply one of the biggest jobs a scat artist could take, so why should I say no?". This is pretty much exactly what a good number of these actors are doing. Leslie, Renee, Brie, Kelly Marie Tran etc... they all know full well what they are part of, how they are acting, and what the original work was and how those are invested in it are going to react. See in some cases perhaps the backlash is unwarranted, but understand when you have a famous property like say "Star Wars" or "Ghost Busters" it's hard to believe they are oblivious to what's going on, especially when there is backlash to the whole idea when it's announced. Ignoring "the haters" when they are the majority of the fan base is never going to go well, and when some of the people doing this seem to be getting off on it (not everyone, but some... Leslie made many bigoted and anti-fan annoucements when Ghostbusters were being made). It's one of those things where most of them basically dug their own graves, and just didn't like the results when they had to lay down in it. Leslie for example made numerous racist comments when the movie was being made and attacked the fans. Brie Larson attacked men and the core fan base. If those groups fire back and are also racist or sexist or whatever when they, or the project, drew the line there, they have no right to complain. If Leslie attacks people for being white, how can she complain when she's attacked for being black? Those who throw stones might not want to live in glass houses. As an actor if your career depends on the fans, then it's probably not a good idea to take, or stay on, a job that is getting massive backlash, yet you notice not one of these people walks away. Ghostbuster 2016 was a complete defilement of the original, and anyone who knew the fan base, or even just paid attention to what was being said, should have noticed this was not a minority of fans being upset, and doubling down on this was going to be a disaster. Nobody was racist or sexist here, they were defending a beloved IP someone was taking a dump on, and those who were taking laxitives and squatting down over it have no right to complain and say "hey we're just professionals, doing a job". Ignorance is also not an excuse, if you don't know an IP, you should damn well take the time to figure it out if your being hired to work with it, especially if the fans are upset. If you can understand the original and see the disconnect, obviously this "re-imagining" isn't working (some do, many don't) and you might just realize the payday isn't worth it. See the cost of that exposure might be not only not working again, but also having hate mobs coming after you for decades due to you having ruined something beautiful, and that's why people are hounding the actors. The idea is to discourage people from being part of projects like this and doing the same thing, if people were quiet and saying "oh well it's okay to throw shit on the Mona Lisa, that's just someone's idea on how to make it better" it would encourage this to be even worse. To be fair, I think the actors deserve even worse, because the message clearly isn't getting through as they keep taking these jobs. Rachel Zegler certainly wasn't thinking "Hmm, maybe I shouldn't take a job to defile Snow White, the life long blowback might not be worth it" because of what happened with things like Ghostbusters 2016. That means if anything, people need to ramp it up, until people simply realize they shouldn't take jobs like this.

Awwww. Maybe she should have got an agent that liked her enough to ask for more? Isnt that why they take a percentage? Imagine paying someone a percentage to get you the most money possible and finding out that the best they were capable of was a mere 10% of your coworkers. Ill bet Leslie heard the word "exposure". If you are an artist, this is a filthy, evil word akin to being called a baby eater. Luckily Leslie is no kind of artist and all this simply washed past her till a BLM friend came along and got her pissed about something new.

That word has the vowel sound of the English word “high.” I don’t know how Paul Feig pronounces his name, but in interviews he comes across as the most smug, annoying, self-satisfied human being alive. One major consequence of this film is that it ushered in a massive wave of silencing criticism. ALL criticism directed at this poorly made film was labeled as misogyny, racism, or trolls. Not one single comment of criticism could _possibly_ be legitimate in the minds of the film makers. In response, the Internet Movie Database shut down its forums. Sure, you can still write reviews, but that's a non-interactive one-shot. The IMDb is no longer a common ground for _discussion_ and _conversation._ The _internationally most common_ ground for people letting their voices be heard on the topic of movies and television was effectively shut down. Other review platforms soon followed suit, like Amazon where you can't comment on reviews anymore.

Jones rightfully complains about a minority of trolls who are genuinely racist and misogynist bigots, and then wrongfully uses them as the main reason for the film's failure. Many classics are not meant to be remade, because the comedy and lore of the story was only compatible with the character, humor and imagination of the original creators. Adopting a classic for someone else's "modern" world view simply will not work. That is the failure that Jones refuses to understand.

As far as Jones forgetting that there was a black main character in Ghostbusters, in way that is how Ernie Hudson had played that character. He wasn't the black guy that was trying to get a job, he was just a normal guy looking for a job, that happened to be black. And unlike Jones, he didn't come across as a stereotype or caricature of what people think a black person is like. Whereas Jones looked like a goofy caricature of a loud obnoxious back woman. Now I know that was the writing and what they wanted from her performance, but it certainly did not make her look like an "every person" type of character like Hudson's Winston did.
