Tell us about an experience you've had where you completed a set you weren't sure you could finish. What did that feel like? What did that do your you?

I think we underestimate our own strength. I imagine I'm one with the weight instead of against the weight. I encourage myself when hypervigilance through each rep. After I complete each set, I "thank the maker." And then breath through disbelief. Wish I could transfer the same vigilance to avoiding "orange sherbet."

Lifting heavy with proper technique! Is about motor units recruiting over practice. Thank you for the simple and excellent explanation

For me (with the deadlift) at that point on the floor where it feels like it's 'too heavy' to move; the cue in my mind is 'just pull anyway'. It forces me to wait it out while those fibers engage and 95% of the time it ends in a successful rep. The NLP program really gave me a true appreciation for 'the grind'.

It sucks I can't squat or deadlift like I used to. Degeneration of L5-S1 with intermittent nerve impingement limits what I feel safe in doing. I have to really listen to my body. I know I can crank out squats at 80kg and deadlifts at around 100kg max.. any more and I get a twinge that I know means I won't be able to train for a week..

Very helpful. Im a masters lifter and do lift heavy. I have a coach. Ive said to him a few times i would have quit. Not so much a rep. More like a last set. Its very beneficial haveing a pair of eyes on bar speed especially squat. Lifting is such a mental challenge. As you say you can train attitude.

Just watched again. Ive failed a few lifts in my day. Im 62 now and lift pretty heavy. Last block, last week i failed 1rm bench 132kg. Failed on strength. Squat failed 185kg on depth . Twice. So you fail and thats it. You try to nail backoffs. Its a long wait to next attempt. Usually 2 months. I got my deadlift which was 227.5 or 500lbs so was happy. But i failed last deadift attempt on last set. I was stuffed. Any way it happens. Enjoy your vids. Your advice is spot on. You cant go on feel.

So at what point is lifting heavy … TOO heavy and you run the risk of serious injury while grinding ? I’m trying to figure it out …🤔

This is exactly what I needed. I've been 'exercising' for years but recently started doing powerlifting and it's a whole new ballgame. It's intimidating to get under a heavy squat bar! Thanks for the video

I've finally got this concept locking in for the deadlift. Is this principle the same for squats, press and bench press, or do you have specific tips for those that may be slightly different? Awesome video by the way!
@BarbellLogic4 жыл бұрын
Same concept of “grinding” for several seconds before finally giving in and letting the weight of the bar win ;) With the squat and bench, be sure that you have a safe way to fail, and that way, you’ll be more likely to try the weight instead of stopping the set prematurely for fear that you won’t finish all 5 reps. Set your safeties for both squat and bench press and you’ll then be able to take more risks and learn to grind.

@@BarbellLogic Well, there was that time I passed out on that fifth rep of that third set. Stuck just above the horizontal and couldn’t move up. Kept trying until I found myself on the floor. Lucky no injury.

I used to be able to grind out squats. But as I've gotten older, my sense of balance has started to become a problem. I feel especially unsteady unracking the bar and walking back into position; the heavier the bar, the worse it becomes. On two occasions, I've lost control of my position coming out of the hole, and almost crashed forward into the rack. Even with safeties in place, set as high as possible, this felt very unsafe. As a result, I'm limiting the weight and no longer trying to grind. I'm trying to get a medical diagnosis and/or resolution for the balance issue. But if that isn't forthcoming, then what?
@BarbellLogic6 жыл бұрын
Use a coach. You may have some form issues. Perhaps not, but you won't know for sure until you get in front of a good coach.
@gregpaulic15446 жыл бұрын
@@BarbellLogic I'll consider that. For what it is worth - I have problems outside the gym: quick tilts of the head, especially forward toward the floor, or looking down when starting down stairs, all produce the same sensation. It is just is a lot more acute when you have 225 lbs on the shoulders, much less margin for error, harder to recover if I do get off balance.

I have a question about your example near the end. Once you have recruited the bigger, slower firing musculature required to lift the heavy deadlift on the first rep will the process happen faster on the next four reps?
