Even as a resident I find it helpful to listen to any information….. things change every year. That book will be a great help. We had to figure it out on our own. FYI - Medicare is means tested. I pay for supplemental coverage which is partly subsidized by my former employer (retirement perk). It is the unexpected with medical. I retired at age 62 in 2018, and 2 weeks after I retired my very fit husband was diagnosed with throat cancer (he was still working). My employer covered full medical for me up to age 65 even as a retiree (another retirement perk) so although I was covered by my husbands medical coverage, I signed on with my own employer just before I retired AND added my husband - double dipping. Because he had double coverage we did not pay anything other than small copays of $10 for some office visits. The total cost of all his treatment was just under $250,000.00 (yes…..that is a quarter of a million… he is doing well). In 2022 I was diagnosed with cancer and so far I am up at $120,000.00. Past the worst of it but still getting some infusions so still some costs. Because of the supplemental coverage I pay on top of Medicare I have been fully covered… again only $10 office copay on office visits. When we moved to the US in 1996 trying to understand and figure out the whole medical system was a nightmare, and we had 2 children under 10.
@ThemeParkBazza2 ай бұрын
So happy your husband is well and you are through the worst of it xx . The system is very complicated and those numbers are very scary, did you use any companies , advisors to help you understand your options ?
@gilscot1002 ай бұрын
@@ThemeParkBazza We have an accountant and a financial advisor who have given advice so those were our only advisors really. So didn’t go to a specific Medicare/Social Security firm. I was very fortunate in that, with my job, my office was close to the office of the HR manager who dealt with benefits. So I picked those brains a lot. And I was fortunate to be in a really good union who sponsored retirement seminars so I attended a couple of those. It was at one of those that it was clearly explained all the options on when to start drawing Social Security. Fortunate also to have 2 friends who retired before I did, and who are each a year older than me so they went through the Medicare process before me.

When you are going to turn 65 you can apply for Medicare 3 months in advance. When you get your Medicare it will be part A and B and you have to apply for part D at that time (and take my advice get it whether you have a lot of prescriptions or not because if you don’t then you have to wait a period and reapply) also you need to get a Medicare supplement which normally runs about $100-150 a month. This takes care of your Medicare deductible and is WELL worth it. Medicare does cost you monthly and is taken out of your Social Security payment and is the same amount for everyone. It’s around $175 a month right now. It typically goes up every year but your Social Security normally goes up as well in what’s called a COLA raise (which is cost of living raise) and it helps cover the increase. Hope this is helpful, I had to do a tremendous amount of research when my husband became disabled.

Given the cost of medical care, this could be one of the best investments to make for all retired people. Never mind in US. Any plans for this in your costings for gym membership etc? £24000 a year is some money to have to fund. Good informative Vlog, I’m finding these interesting. This blog may scare some people so if you're not rich or well planned here's the info you might need. once you're on social security you can get full coverage for about $120 a month if you are not poor. also never pay that much for health care coverage in the US and i mean $400 a month is ridiculous when you won't use it. you can self fund y our medical coverage because you would never use that much money . Also medical bills can't affect your credit rating and as long as you agree to make a small monthly payment you cannot be prosecuted or anything. so unless you have cancer or something like that never pay that much money for medical in the US. I am poor and disabled on social security so i am fully covered for everything for free but i grew up with no insurance so i know how it works. we never went or even now go to the dr unless we thought we were dying lol

Bupa is now spires health care

It’s still Bupa- at least mine is. Spire is the name of some of the hospitals, which was originally formed when Bupa sold off its hospitals. But Spire is an entirely different (listed) company to BUPA.

Funny that you are discussing healthcare costs while Mrs. Bazza chugging from giant bottle of rum.

No offense meant sir and ma’am. You both look so old in your chronological age of 58 years old. However, your videos are very informative and not boring to watch. We don’t skip the advertisements. Mote power!
