Yeah, What makes it worse is that she doesn't really justify it. It's clear she just thinks it's categorically the most important quality of anyone who has slaves without really backing the statement up, but in a time period when lots of people had slaves, that doesn't really bear out. There are people who were intimately involved in the slave trade, but to my knowledge washington was not, and she doesn't really say anything here to change that. She kind of tries to justify the argument later on by suggesting he was just a control freak, but while he definitely wasn't a socialist, arguing that a defining trait of someone famous for giving up power is they were a control freak is a bit of a stretch, especially when, if you do know about Washington's relationship with slaves, you know it was something he struggled with morally. Not enough to stop being a slave-owner unfortunately, but to say it was his most important trait is basically just applying modern morality without any sense of context whatsoever. Obviously we are as much a product of our times as they are, but you should be able to have SOME context.

@@KaleRylan Wow, so just because "a lot of other people" were involved in the most horrible and inhumane practice in human history, you think that kinda makes it fine for Washington to be one of them. I think you need to look deeper into what that actually means and how disgusting everything surrounding the treatment of enslaved peoples at that time were. There is no way you can understand the true implications of having hundreds of slaves and at the same think that it's OK simply because it was "part of the time"!

@@AndrewNiccol Correct. It was about both, the tax itself AND the representation. They didn't feel the taxes were justified and would likely have fought against them no matter the rate. That's because in many cases, people are just plain unreasonable and self-centered, then just as now. Lucky for them, they also had a perfectly valid reason, because taxation without representation is indeed unjust. Taxes being higher today goes without saying, considering the massive amounts of safety nets built into modern society. @jasonrusso980823 күн бұрын
We NEVER said he was a master strategist. You have to begin somewhere. A true leader DOES make mistakes, & knows it. He doesn't sit upon arrogant vanity of superior knowledge. (Sound familiar?) Possesses humility & shares in the suffering & celebration of those they lead. Because if they do not, they themselves are no better than the tyrants that they oppose & contest. It's easy to cowardly sit back two hundred plus years later and strip someone of their actual accomplishments in their absence. Is that your "wish" of all the things you could apply that too, that's YOUR endeavor? Small goals, baby steps. LoL Well, no one ever claimed you were a good leader either, you have to start somewhere. 🤏😘
@ZIEMOWITIUS22 күн бұрын
He was no tactical genius, but never claimed to be himself and didn't seem to be regarded as such in his day. He was made Commander in Chief of the Continental Army, which is, as is usually the case with the top ranking general in most armies, is mostly an administrative/organizational role. For example, General Marshall in WWII was Chief of Staff of the army, outranking both MacArthur and Eisenhower, and he spent most of the war in Washington D.C. overseeing the whole war, dealing mostly in logistics and broad strategy, not smaller scale tactical decisions. The top guy usually isn't personally leading armies in the field, he's overseeing the whole thing. In that regard, Washington was the exception because he did personally lead troops in the field. He was, however, probably the best man for the job that the Continentals had available since he was an excellent organizer and leader. He was no tactical chess master, but I wouldn't say he was incompetent either which some try to argue. He had a handful of battlefield victories under his belt against the British Army, which was usually better equiped, better trained, and better led than his own.

You mix your terms. Washington was a fine battlefield tactician. As physically brave as any man ever was. As a strategist he was middling, but his Superior command of his own ego allowed him to implement the strategy of more capable men, and in that way leading to a strategic victory. And Washington's strategy was always to keep the Continental army in existence above winning victories, that was Washington's strategy and it proved to be the war-winning one for which he gets credit. This video is surface level conversations that is so cursory as to nearly be false.
