On March 25th of 1964 professional thief Neil McCauley would come face to face with Chicago Police Detective Chuck Adamson for the last time. The two had played a game of cat and mouse over the course of three years in the Chicago area. Although he didn't agree with his outlawish ways, Detective Adamson couldn't help but admire McCauley and his professional. McCauley excited him as a detective. The two would meet face to face for the first time in 1963 and share a cup of coffee. The two men discovered they shared more in common than either would have thought- but the conversation would with a bitter taste of reality. Knowing full well, they'd put each other down in a second if or when it came to it. And hundreds of rounds later, it came to it.
Chuck Adamson would later trade the Police force for Hollywood. Making a name for himself as a writer with such works as Miami Vice and Crime Story. Adamson told a then young filmmaker Michael Mann about McCauley. Michael Mann was so intrigued by the story that he brought it to the big screen in 1995 as what is now known as HEAT.

HEAT is definitely the best bank heist movie ever. The cast and crew were top notch. The shootout scenes were second to none when it came to realism. HEAT 's shoot out scene isn't just fantastic because the guys move with real tactical training. It's amazing because the sound engineer understood gunfire echoing off buildings and they kept the score minimal and in the background. One of my favorite movies too - so under appreciated.

I saw Heat three times in the theater, the shootout scene was so incredible. The real audio of the gunshots echoing off the buildings makes such a huge difference from the canned gunfire in EVERY other movie. Michael Mann, Pacino, and DeNiro were all at the apex of their careers in that movie, it's a masterpiece. I knew it was based on true events but I didn't know the extent of it. Great vid.

Michael Mann explained the echoing affect and how necessary it is in an urban environment with shootouts. Any of his films that have gunfire in that setting there will be that deep vast resonating echo. You see the same thing with Tom Cruise in collateral when he shoots the guys that stole his briefcase. Anyone who’s heard a gunshot in an urban setting like that with cement buildings knows it sounds 100% like that. His idea of emphasizing that sound to be mandatory in his films is to try and give an example of the sheer power of what a gun can do and what it’s capable of. It’s about the bad guys in his films living by the gun as he explained.

The gunfire sounds so real, because director Michael Mann used special blanks, recorded the shots with some state of the art audio equipment and then used these recordings instead of dubbing the shots with stock ''gunfire audio'', like they usually do in Hollywood movies. Best example of this, is Terminator 2, where James Cameron spend all the budget on CGI & pyro and then dubbed all the gunfire over with some shitty stock audio.

Ya' gotta hand it to Val Kilmer for the reload of his Colt 733. Movies normally get this wrong or just make a point of never showing the clumsy actor reload a weapon. Kilmer did it perfectly. That takes a lot of practice. It shows his dedication to this film and his craft IMO.

The thing I love about the Heat shootout scenes is them shooting through the windshield. It's not ideal since glass dust blasts back in the face but you do what you gotta do. It was that next level gritty realism. Every other movie they are hanging out of the window and shooting out tires like it's nothing. And the consultant they brought in, Andy McNabb is a very interesting guy. I highly recommend checking out his story "Bravo Two Zero" or even just watch the TV movie of the same title with Sean Bean.

Mann was so invested in making this work (and making it realistic), and for other films, including his Miami Vice film remake, and Collateral, he saw to it that the cast members received combat drills and weapons training from military technical consultants. For all that's worth, I think it paid off, because Mann's films are some of the closest to the real life you could ever get to be believable on screen. Between that, and the sound engineers amazing work in all three of those films to make the weapons sound real. It's as good as it might ever get. I respect the commitment, and I love this story.

I watched this in 96’ with my dad when I was 10, we had to be sneaky and watch it when my mom was out because she was kind of on the fence…. And I don’t care how much time passes or how many times I see it, there are a few scenes in Heat that still get me all pumped and happy, just like it did as I sat next to my dad…. Thanks for the post man… killer work as always, and this one in specific gave me an intense feeling of reminiscent nostalgia… it’s funny how meaningful something simple like sitting down and enjoying a film can be to a son when it seems his father is putting time aside specifically to spend time with with him…. especially so if said father seems to be legitimately excited to do so, as is the case in my memories.. And the main reason why this memory struck such a meaningful chord in me is that my son (first and only child) is almost 3 and i am constantly trying to think of things to do with and/or for him that will authentically communicate and internalize just how much he means to me and understand that even if I’m gone for most of the day, there is and always will be space left in my life to to spend time with him…. Sorry for the long drawn out comment but I just wanted to express my appreciation for creating the context that reminded me of a very meaningful moment lost in the shadow of time… and I’ll preemptively send you a thanks from my son for his own soon to be fond memories of anxiously waiting for mom to go to Costco so he can sneak down to the basement to watch Heat with his dad only to spill the beans and tell mom about the movie at dinner because he is too excited to keep the secret…

Apparently this is pretty common among PD departments and some Army units, the scene is just too accurate, there isn't good real footage of a shootout in a situation like that from so many angles hence why the scene is used for training so much.

The Marines both Recon & Raiders still use the shoot out scene in Downtown LA as a floor plan on how to retreat. Val Kilmer’s reload scene is said to be 💯 accurate according to Drill instructors. The actors were trained by special forces on how to handle the weapons. A different set of men trained the actors playing the Cops 😎✌🏾

Wonderful background stories on one of the best and iconic movies ever made. The shootout scene is unique and the one thing everyone remembers in first but this movie has so many great scenes. The scene were the roles are turned and the cops are being watched is just pure gold. This is one of the few movies where every part is perfect, from acting to sound to realism, and together they make a thrilling almost 3 hour crime drama. You can watch this movie over and over and you still notice new things. A true masterpiece! ''Well ya know, for me, the action is the juice." Michael Cheritto, Heat

"While frustrated, admired nikoli's discipline." Bro that's kinda awesome. He's an officer of the law and hates things like that and he's sitting there on the opposite side of the fence (metaphorically speaking) and still respected some character traits he has. To notice such a small detail about someone from such a distance when I'm sure he was tense af is impressive and it just reminds me of the old saying "you don't have to like someone to respect them." I have an ex friend I felt that way about on so many levels. Stupid, brash, foolhardy, I even wanna call.him evil. But Bold, brave, daring, audacious even if a bit wreckless. He once said to me "the things I'd do if I had the money your parents give you." And I knew he'd do all sorts of nasty things with it, and that reminded me of Harry Potter and the sorcerer's stone, like right I was blessed to get that kinda money in my hands because I don't even think like that and while I ain't perfect I'm not gonna use that money to form a gang stock up on guns and try to "run these streets dawg" but I always felt the same way about wishing I had his might/courage/audacity and just all around willingness to never give up. I wish we had world peace more and more I always feel like a lot of these people would be friends in another life and get along swimmingly if it wasn't for certain circumstances. Like hell the ATF is getting such a bad reputation right now and I guess I'm an ex criminal by nature, I'll always be one on paperwork, but I really liked the police detective and ATG agents I rode with when I had to rat on my friend. I felt sick to my stomach turning on someone I considered to be my best friend /big brother from another mother. I know I did the right thing he stole a gun from a pawn shop, but I even thought he'd like them guys too if he could meet em. We passed this gas station called GO TYME, and when me and my friend passed it we laughed and said "HAH! it's go tyme!." "Bro I'm stopping here just cuz the name made me laugh." And when riding with the ATG agents and the police detective they made the same damn joke and it just made me realize how human everyone is and I just kept thinking of that song "Why can't we be friends, why can't we be friends." Damn, just got to the part of them talking in a coffee shop, that reinforces everything I just said, polar opposites like yang and yin, but still one in the same. Two halves of a whole dancing around each other in constant madness. But as ugly as it gets there's something beautiful to be found within it all if you look close enough.

When I was in South Africa on a safari in Kruger Park (Non-Hunting), my Ranger/Guide was a veteran of the Angola war. He served from 1984 to 1989. Came in as lowest level Lieutenant and came out of the war as a full Captain. After South Africa had pulled out of Angola, there was a hit on an armored truck in South Africa. He said it was too well coordinated not to have been executed by former military men. He suspected it was guys he had served with and told me the movie Heat had gotten the idea of that Heist. They had studied everything and executed it like clockwork. Guess we would need to ask Micheal Mann if what my Ranger told me was true. Thanks for the video!

This is a beautifully crafted video, you've presented this background story artistically and concisely! I think this is your best work I've seen. Michael Mann added an entirely new level of combat realism to his productions, with an episode of Miami Vice getting particular attention for its portrayal of 'The Mozambique Drill' and for using a Master Shooter to play the role of assassin! It remains a masterpiece to this day and will always be so! Mann understood that dynamics of actual shootouts were far more interesting than the Hollywood versions! Crime Story was one of my favorite series ever, Dennis Farina inhabited that role like no one else ever could, in the same way that Elliot Gould did in Raymond Chandler's The Long Goodbye (which, if I'm not mistaken was also Arnold Swarzenegger's first screen role!).
