i lived on an estate in SLondon for many years when i 1st came to this country. my parents are English. i love the UK and contribute. i took and sold drugs from about 13-20. i moved out of the area, to somewhere not better but somewhere new. I studied, worked any job i could, i dressed smart, spoke well and now am a higher rate tax payer, i am continuing my studies and have a new lease on life. i agree the system isn't there to help the less fortunate, but where there is will there is a way.

i lived on heygate and aylesbury, for 10 years between them, when i 18-28yrs old-2002-2012. i never had any issues with the estate, people or the flats. fair do's outsides a shithole, but thats down mainly to council neglect.if u imagine the amount of jobs could have been created to maintain the estates, cleaners, caretakers, electicians etc.i lived well on that estate, started working as a bricky, good money, resonable rent, cushty car,i never lived like a poor person, even though its wrongly seen as a poor persons estate

Lived in Northchurch Aylesbury Estate. Also Claydon Haygate estate. Walked through most of the estates in Southwark. For me it was 90% fine living there, just got frustrating with repairs! Remember I just finished redecorating kitchen in Heygate and woke up to find dirty water leaking from ceiling kitchen, I just laughed with my heart sinking at the sametime😳

When the London riots occurred, I was in Uganda and had been there for the past year, so had some very close friends. They were shocked at what Britains were doing, assuming we were all millionaires. I tried my best to graphically explain the day to day life of many Londoners, the lifestyle, the accomodation, the police treatment. I just wish I had videos like these to show them, so they can know how many really live. How can one of the richest countries in the world subject citizens to this?

Gentrification and Regeneration is a serious problem, they should keep the blocks up but just refurbish them instead of building flashy private apartments for the same old west-end white millennials to open up their trendy pop up coffee shops in the area.

@@easthustler3937 It ain't a serious problem. People like u just want that ghetto lifestyle where you blame the system not helping u. Very beautiful photos, intense music, very artistic. To be honest with you, if your intention was to convey a sense of depression and oppression... well... waching this video I didn't feel....I felt, instead, a sort of melancholic loneliness, depth, intensity, a sense of loss, and, as paradoxical as it may sound,...beauty! I think you're a bit of a poet! from an Italian artistic soul who lived 8 years in London. CIAO!

Social cleansing on its way Carpenters Estate in Stratford Newham still stands Empty and decaying for years now. its tall blocks look weird in the night sky not a light or in any of them. just waiting to be pulled down, as new trendy apartment blocks rise up around them. The design aesthetic of New Brutalism is, raw natural concrete, mainly formed into textures, elements of texture or abstractionistic forms, and the composition of many of these structure have been relatively though out well, though there are design flaws, what architecture does NOT have design flaws?? When you understand design and aesthetics from abstractionistic designers from the 1920's through the 1970's , it will be understood that the majority of these are NOT a slums, though pleasing!!

A thought provoking video and though comments have been made on here that 'all' cities have 'less wealthy areas' I do feel that the poverty divide is greatest in London where practically the whole of City of Westminster district is rich bankers, for example. Also, I like the fact that the video is a blank canvas - we draw our own conclusions from the images - it is not necessarily saying this is bad in all cases or implying this - there could be community spirit and 'real' people living in these estates. It is pointing out something that is often ignored - that London is not the wealthy image it is often portrayed and actually more should be done to improve people's environments and the 'gentrified' areas do not always benefit the locals.

By the way. Very nice Jazz riff at 8:30 and on!! VERY NICE! The clean well maintained properties with building clusters, and the sheer vertical high rise effidice's are VERY elegant looking, again these DO NOT look like slums, but like LUXURY FLATS!! The low rise very long buildings, yes, have a militant prison camp look to them, and design flaw that could be easly corrected by retrofitting the facades, altering the builings, adding vertical elements, theres alot that could be done to improve!

SKUDUSKUR sorry but your claim is way too ignorant NYC has calmed now but if you take it back to 1970-1995 a single housing project from any NYC ghetto was worse than what you named much worse than what you named and four or five other estates put together. Look at Queensbridge housing projects, Marcy housing projects, Stapleton projects, park Hill projects there were plenty worse than what you named guns and drugs were more out there and the poverty was way worse you lost your damn mind to compare London estates to NYC projects, London is like heaven to NYC. I understand Londons estates have had bad reps as well but it's nowhere near to NYC.

I heard that London has a lot of muggings, car jackings and shit like that(shit the way knives are so prevelant). But in the U.S., this is the land of no snitching. Ya'll gotta realise how many crimes here never get reported cause people don't talk to police in the first place, police here don't even report crimes in some cities just to make crime rates look lower than they are. Im not saying that fully explains the crime rates, but don't take them for what they are

I don't understand your point, those type of estates exist in every big city... what were you expecting? Why poverty and estates have to be the real London?

Listen hear now I’m from west London and in London it ain’t about what colour u are I grew up on an estate/project housing for Americans and all my friends are mixed I have 80%black 10%white and 10% Asian London ain’t what they portray it on tv I’ve grown up around shootings stabbing my friends doing life in prison or killed I remember playing out at like 10 years old and my mum always telling not to go down the ally’s cos of crackheads and the needles they leave on the floor I even went down there once and see a girl dead on the floor cos she took a overdose back then it’s just normal to see but as I grew up I realised that it wasn’t right for kids to grow up in places like this and then they blame teenagers for the stabbing and killing it don’t make senses in some way I’m glad that they are demolishing these places even tho they are our homes something got to be dun since they demolished my estate it has change abit obviously some crime is still there but it’s a lot more cleaner and abit safe for kids to go out and not have to worry about a crazy crackhead chasing them down the street. I really do hope London gets better for the children to many young kids are expose to things they should have never seen and for the people in the comments saying London isn’t that bad come walk a day in my shoes and it won’t take long for u to get back on that plane back to your nice country.pray for London/uk🙏🏻🙏🏻

All eyez On me by demolishing these places, they are kicking out the poor ppl, this creates a whole another problem, they are being forced out to live in places like Birmingham and that, believe me u don’t wanna live in Birmingham, like now u have incidents happening like what happened in star city, when they looted Aldi, Birmingham is like one massive ghetto now, the rich moved into London made it neeky and then Birmingham became a shithole. I’d give anything to live in any where in London
