Thank you for the very informative breakdown. I have been looking into 3d printings usefulness for my life and you just helped with some of my wife's biggest concerns.

Nice, Yeah, these were all the questions I had about 3d printing before I started the hobby. You figure it out with time, but I'm glad you appreciated the breakdown! :D Happy Printing! I've made TONS of useful stuff. It won't make you rich, but it'll save $5-$10 quite often, and it's super fun!

Thank you so much for this video. I have been on the fence for so long if i should by a 3D Printer. I was about to spend about £50 plus shipping on Etsy for like 5 figure heads for my customisation. when it would cost them pennies to make. So yeah, I am now sold on getting my own. Thank you once again. Great, helpful video.

Hi, Luke. I have a question? Do i pay actual money to the ender 3 software to print, or do you mean the price in sense of filament. Haven't bought one yet.
@LeisureLuke Жыл бұрын
You can find free CAD modeling software, free thingiverse files to print, and free slicing software. There are optional paid versions of these things, but most of us use the free ones. In this video I’m only really talking about the cost of the machines, and then the cost of filament.

I assume prices have gone up since then but still are relatively inexpensive as far as actually printing costs?
@LeisureLuke Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I think everything got cheaper for a bit, but lately prices are rising again as with everything so far in 2023. Filament prices and electrical prices are about the same as always. I print slower, finer, and hotter than I used to, so I probably spend 50% more now on electricity. I print thicker walls as well, so each piece weights about 25% more. I have been getting good filament consistently for at or under $20/roll. Is this a prospective hobby for you?

Hey Luke, quick question How do you print? Do you have to connect your pc/laptop to the printer or can you use like a thumb drive with the 3d model file in it? Worried about having to wait for 6+ hours for it to print and not being able to use the laptop for other stuff. Thanks Luke
@LeisureLuke Жыл бұрын
Both ways are options, but I've always printed from USB :). Every printer has this option, and it's the way to go for me!

Is there a way to 3D print faster?
@LeisureLuke2 жыл бұрын
Always! You can print thicker layers with bigger nozzles much faster. You can also buy a more expensive 3d primer with more rigidity in an enclosure that is warm for faster printing. Most things are trade offs between speed and quality. Best to just decide what to print and then let it run overnight. Get your setup working so well and consistent that it doesn’t require monitoring. Have a specific item you want printed fast?

Okay, if one roll cost $15.. how much dimension cubic mass it has?
@LeisureLuke Жыл бұрын
The internet tells me density of PLA is about 1.25g/cubic centimeter. So around 800cm^3 or 48inches^3 of volume is in each 1kg roll. Keep in mind that almost everything we print is a hollow shell with a little infill. I use around 25% infill and 1.2-1.6mm think shells. So your final printed volume is more like 150 cubic inches or 2400 cubic centimeters. Really depends on settings. No one is struggling with the cost of the filament - time is usually a bigger factor. One other note, if you’re getting $15 rolls, the quality may be OK, but the color and quality will vary batch to batch. I’m spending closer to $22/roll now just to get consistency in bulk.

Damn it's sad how much prices went up, now on Amazon it's $20.99 for pla
@LeisureLuke2 ай бұрын
This video is a few years old, and at the time it was $20/kg. Inflation hasn’t hit plastics as hard as everything else. However, I spend more like $25+ on pla these days. I always for PLA plus or PLA pro. The additives make for a much better finish quality.

I know this is an older video and I haven’t read to see if anyone else has pointed this out but your price per unit is way off since you are not weighing all the waste material it takes to print.
@LeisureLuke2 жыл бұрын
Waste material? It accounts for something in the long run, I’m sure, but maybe 3%? I still never use supports, no brims, and I have 10 machines running with about 1 failure per week. When you say waste material… what are you mostly referring to?

Hey, great video! Thank you! I'm very new to 3D printing, and I recently sent my first 3D model to an online printing service. They said it would cost me $40-$60 to print my 3" model! Either I'm doing something wrong or these services really jack up the price! Would love to find a video that compares this to the cost of using online services.
@LeisureLuke2 жыл бұрын
Online printing services? Can you send me links! I'd be very curious what they are doing, also, if you send me the file and specs maybe I can do it cheaper than that! It should basically be the cost of material + shipping + $fee, which should all be cheap, unless you want a 100% solid part or have some harsh strength requirements. LeisureLukeYT@gmail.com, send all the info you've got!!!
