I grew up in Jacksonville but finally moved down to the Tampa Bay Area when i was 30. I personally never liked Jacksonville, but it depends on what you want. If you are looking to live in “Florida” then Jacksonville is definitely not for you. This city is not really considered Florida by the rest of the state Orlando and down. It gets colder up there and the beaches are kind of gross. There’s no tropical feel and you won’t see the tropical types of palm trees that you see in the rest of the state. The winters are too cold for them to survive. The beaches have dirty looking brown sand and discolored water versus the rest of the state that has blue and teal colored water with cleaner white sand. Most Floridians view it as more southern Georgia than Florida. This city is also pretty conservative and still in the Bible Belt with churches on every corner. If that’s what you’re looking for, then cheers. I was surely glad to move to an area that’s not saturated with religion and churches. The downtown is pretty dead and has always been so, so you don’t ever get a “city” feel. The rest of the town is suburban sprawl with copies of the same chain restaurants and stores and lacking a lot of character. The only areas with any culture and diversity are Riverside and San Marco. Other than that it’s mainly just a spread out southern town in the Bible Belt. I never liked it, but to each their own. If you’re looking to live in “Florida” then i would consider Orlando or further south.

Well Jacksonville has got a lot of crime so if your location has that too you’ll be fine.

I agree, it probably will have a much different vibe than San Francisco. There are a lot of differences between the two places, but plenty of great reasons to move here!

Hi everyone. We are a family of 4 and we are thinking to move from Sweden to Jacksonville. I wonder if is it a good place for a family with small kids? Is it safe?Does it have good schools,good hospitals,good jobb opportunities,good standart and quality of living? Does snakes and aligators appears everywhere like around the houses or in the park roads? Please if you have a friendly advice for me,I would really appreciate it. Thank you in advance.
