What if it was your 2 year old child or your sweet, old grandma with hemophilia? Is it worth it then? Declawing does not amputate the equivalent of finger pads. I've heard of vets who had cats walking around, even bringing in pray the afternoon of being declawed. I believe the procedure should be available without stigma when needed for indoor cats with a problematic scratching habit. I've personally had a declawed childhood pet cat bring in a snake. Drove the washing machine repair man atop the machine. My mother had to get a shovel to remove the thing. Edit: I know of re-homing, claw trimming, and nail caps. My position is such that while you shouldn't declaw for simple convince, there exist extreme cases where it may be warranted when not strictly medically necessary for the cat.

@staciderfelt3 жыл бұрын
@collars and cuffs I'm also a mother. But something to keep in mind is if a pet isnt safe to have around children, instead of mutilating the animal, we should rehome it. According to research published in the Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery, declawing increases the risk of long-term or persistent pain, manifesting as unwanted behaviors such as inappropriate elimination (soiling/urinating outside of the litter box) and aggression/biting. This is not only detrimental to the cat (pain is a major welfare issue and these behaviors are common reasons for relinquishment of cats to shelters), but also has health implications for their human companions, as cat bites can be serious. So they may have made their cat MORE likely to hurt their children by declawing.

When my son was a toddler, we had to constantly monitor his interactions with the cat, because he just refused to leave her alone, even when she gave all the warning signs and we explained them to him. One day we were too slow and she left the shallowest cat scratches I have ever seen with a single stroke. She tried not to do it and moderated the strike as much as possible. After that day, my son referred to her as "ouch" for a while and respected her warnings, but was still able to interact positively or order her away from things. That is the only time she ever struck him and all other claw use was directed to designated scratching surfaces. Not even an attempt on furniture.

I've heard declawing, equated to removing a your knuckle and the walking on what remains. What is worse is the trauma it causes the cat since they can't defend themselves as well. Resulting in the kitty becoming an anxious baby that bites the shit out of you when triggered.
@PhoenyxRysing4 жыл бұрын
One of my family's rescue cats literally does that, because whoever declawed him didn't do it right. Poor guy's got arthritis and a limp because of it, but is much happier now that he's on meds for said arthritis. If I ever have a cat that's declawed, it'll be because the previous owners did it. Unless there is an urgent medical reason to do so, I'm never declawing a cat.
@vispev31234 жыл бұрын
When we adopted our cat it was already declawed and I mean it's way friendlier to strangers then our gray cat that was feral as a baby. But I mean it's already reaaaaaaly domesticated. @@abcxyz-st1zh pretty sure having to give up your cat and then in turn it being put down because you can't declaw them is far worse then the act of declawing itself. it's good to teach them early to use their claws on posts but that doesn't always work. not every cat is the same, they are all unique. even more so if you adopt one that was never trained. plus if they are hyper aggressive or don't understand how to be gentle then you only really have a few options. neither of them are good but one is clearly a lot worse for the cat then the other.

We have 11 cats, so we find nail bits everywhere. My daughter calls them cat onions because they look like the dry tops of onions and come off in layers like you said. It’s illegal in a lot of countries to declaw a cat. The US needs to step it up, since it’s still legal in most states. If you don’t want your stuff scratched up, learn to clip nails, try one of the many options available to train your cat to only use scratching posts, try claw caps, or don’t get a cat. Save yourself and the kitty so much pain and heartache, please! ❤️😸 I’m a new sub. Thank you for this awesome video!

Peregrine raptor?
@kylegesin71784 жыл бұрын
Pretty sure that's what they mean. But there is a little asterisk with that. Cause they don't get to that speed user their own power. They use gravity to make them fall at that speed. Of course, their body design and basically whole biology is made to allow this to happen, otherwise other birds would do it too. But they don't achieve this sped with their own power. I think the cheetah is the faster animal that does it using their own power, but could be very wrong there.
@danilooliveira65804 жыл бұрын
taxonomy is weird, saying birds are classified as dinosaurs would be like saying humans are fish. I'm surprised you haven't mentioned the applied science and geometry involving a cat's recurved claws. If we look at some of the engineering and science behind recurved agricultural blades (e.g. Hawkbills and Karambits) we see that these blade designs are extremely effective and cutting soft targets because the recurve feature breaks the surface tension of whatever one is cutting due to leading with the point and NOT the edge. The research showed that even fairly dull recurved blades often outperformed sharper conventional blades. This is especially relevant for cats because their prey tends to be soft and squishy (mice, lizards, birds, etc.). If we look at police and crime lab statistics, recurved blades tend to cause far more severe injuries because they break the surface tension of their target (the skin) more effectively. The research findings showed that the more effectively a blade can break through the skin, the more serious the following cut would be (apparently skin is fairly durable and is pretty good at stopping lacerations of the tissue underneath). One can easily look up on KZbin the cut tests of recurved blades on meat (Spyderco Civilian, Spyderco Matriarch, Cold Steel Black Talon, various Karambit style blades, etc.) and compare them to standard straight blades and curved blades to see this demonstrated in real time.
@rivencraft17344 жыл бұрын
As someone with a good grasp of blades and been using them for years, no. An inward curve DOES NOT cut better. An inward curve traps the material against the blade allowing a sharp blade to remain in contact with the material, a dull blade to tear said material. A dull conventional blade will slide off because of the lack of pressure on the material, a sharp blade will simply part the material on contact. Because I'd the trapping nature of a hook animal claws are shaped that way. If indeed it did cut better it would be evolutionarily disadvantageous since skin would slice and prey would escape.
@1917cutlass4 жыл бұрын
@@rivencraft1734 That's an interesting point, and I agree with you on one part, but disagree with you on another. First, the disagreement. Curved blades do indeed create extra leverage on cuts via trapping material against it, as you have pointed out. That being said, every study I have ever seen very clearly demonstrates that because the point leads and breaks the surface tension of the cutting area (i.e. stabbing through as opposed to cutting through), it does tend to create far more powerful cuts against soft targets (in this case, flesh) after the initial surface tension has been dealt with. Now, where I agree with you. I have confounded a cat's claws with a purpose designed agricultural blade. As you pointed out, it would be disadvantageous for a cat to cut through its prey (more likely to escape), hence, the inside of a kitty's claws are dull. However, this fact does lend myself to my point above, because the curvature of claws are indeed breaking the surface tension of the skin, so said kitty can better grapple with its intended prey.
@rivencraft17344 жыл бұрын
@@1917cutlass the problem here though it's that surface tension on real world materials isn't even so at the point if contact it may be broken but it isn't broken along the path of the blade. A curved blade does perform better generally but that it's because of oblique contactcause the pressure to drastically increase as the blade is moved, but on an inward curve specifically I have never seen a blade perform even on the same level as a straight blade. Now for clarity I'm comparing industrially produced razor blades so the materials, sharpness and whatnot are essentially identical, geometry is the only real difference and hooks just don't do as well at cutting. I don't know the criteria of these studies so I simply won't comment on that, I'm talking personal experience with hundreds of blades going through lots of materials. Take that as you will, but it's experience and a respectful disagreement.

When I took in my kitten to the vet to get spayed, I asked the Vet about getting declawed too. She told me that I should only consider it as a last resort and explained what it was and also some kitties can become more aggressive because they have lost one of their defences. I immediately got a scratch post and katnip spray and trained her to use that. 13 yrs later and not a single causalty of any furniture or anything. She never even uses them on the dog. She did on our kids when they were little wobbly humans things once each but they learned why not to corner a cat it never happened to them again. Our cat hates her claw trim sessions but it's literally just because she hates being held in one place, nothing to do with the trimming itself. In regards to declawing, I sadly have an appointment set-up to declaw one toe for one of my fluffy boys--he has a weird, recurring tissue growth that's damaging one of his hind leg toenails and it's opening him up to potential infection each time he jostles his nail around (from playing, wrestling, using the litterbox, etc.). :( I'm not sure how it all happened, it's very recent, but I'm hoping after the procedure happens that he'll be happier not having to deal with semi-often bleeding. Thank you for the message about declawing. More pet owners need to know that.

I didn't see enough comments appreciating Lady 3Jane's name. William Gibson approves of this kitten.

@@RifkaFix I understood it immediately, and approve accordingly. Gibson is one of my favourite authors.

"It stings more than having to suddenly start a channel from scratch." What exactly happend over there?

I believe it was mostly creative freedom issues with Nerdest, but I'm not sure whether or not money or general work environment also played a role. As with much of this behind the scenes stuff there's lots of speculation with very little evidence and no one involved is directly saying anything about the other party for obvious reasons.

The old channel that Kyle came from is literally dead in the water, now. All they do is re-release really old Kyle episodes. It's a dumb move that only serves to capitalize on Kyle's popularity and personality. It makes me sick. I don't watch any of those videos, because I'd rather watch the current Kyle do great things on his own channel. Either way, we, the fans, will probably never know the real story about why Kyle had to "suddenly start a channel from scratch," and that's okay. All that matters is that Kyle is continuing to share his nerdiness with us. Hopefully, Kyle can get back to making super intricate physics videos. My partner is a mechanical engineer, and we loved watching Kyle show all that intense math xD We really loved the footnotes videos, too!! Anyway, I digress. The point: Kyle is great, and deserves to be treated well.

I watched your Elephant's Foot and Demon Core videos and thought they were really interesting, so I went to your channel to look for more stuff like it. But the "Cat Claw Science" title totally caught my eye! So through-out the whole video I was ranting at my brother about why de-clawing was so freaking cruel, and then at the end of the video, you made a point of talking about it. And at that moment you gained my infinite respect and instant sub!
