All they needed to do was start giving Frank more depth. Over time the writers could have helped Frank grow. Not that difficult.

It worked for Loretta Swit but I think Frank Burns as a character was to far "gone" from reality to give him that depth. It did pave the way for Major Winchester who was in his own way a complicated character. I couldn't help thinking that some of the earlier Winchester episodes were meant for Burns originally, like the time he tried to gather up the army script that civilians were using to buy things, for pennies on the dollar. It really sounded like something Burns would do, not a multi-millionaire like Winchester.

His role as Frank Burns was unforgettable. Alan Alda's Hawkeye became way too much overkill. And I always felt that there were way too many "Chopper's" interruptions in the series. When Maj. Chuck Emerson Winchester (in one episode) replaced Burns, he became my favorite character. I memorized so many of his intelligent lines from the series. "But alas, I am a surgeon, my hands are needed for the saving of lives, not for the (ah ha ha chopping motion) manufacture of kindling." Just one of many lines that I loved from David. I have the box set. My brother and I can practically run down all the lines from every episode. We still watch it every single day. Thanks for letting us know more about Larry's personal life. Love your channel. You guys are the best!

I think Frank's role would have evolved and grown had he stayed … I think either way it was simply just a choice of Linville to leave and try to capitalize on his fame, something many an Actor has done historically. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't.

I've long thought that Mr. Linville probably got just plain bored with Frank Burns. Five seasons and that character never changed one bit, unlike all the other characters. Considering his background, small wonder. He sounds like he was as kind and gracious a man as Burns wasn't. Shame he wasn't allowed to live longer. One small thing, that headstone you showed has a date of death in 1974. Clearly the wrong one. His name was Lawrence Lavon Linville, 1939 to 2000.

In the early 80's I frequented a small local playhouse in N. San Diego County and saw 2 plays, one written by him and another writer and one also written in collaboration but in which he acted as one of the characters. Both were great. I was sad to hear about his illness and passing. As a former corpsman during the Vietnam War I could relate to the insanity and heartache that was frequently displayed on the show.

In a lot of ways Charles Emerson Winchester truly was the embodiment if the second half of MASH. Not as funny, and took himself a little too seriously. In the movie version of MASH, Burns was portrayed by Robert Duval, who was last seen wearing a straight jacket and being carted of to the loony bin in a Jeep….. Linville’s Frank Burns also went bonkers, but while on R&R in Tokyo. Charles was an attempt to create a new Frank Burns, but on steroids! Eventually things toned down and the writing changed and Charles became part of the team… But because I come from Boston just like Charles I kinda fell in love with him…. What he really did well was his Boston Brahman accent that he did consistently through all the years he was on MASH.

Larry regretted leaving MASH? This sentiment must have arisen very late in his life. In the mid-80's, I worked as a standin/photo-double on a new show, "Misfits of Science" and met Larry Linville while shooting the pilot. The show pilot hired a lot of actors but unlike most, Larry was approachable and sociable. I asked why he was replaced and he told me he wasn't. He decided to leave because production did not respect the Major Burns character and turned him into a rube. Larry said that during the series, production made a point of highlighting every other character, giving each a episode of glory. Except Frank Burns. He decided it was time to move on.

there was one episode where frank was sending less severely wounded soldiers to triage first if they were white while keeping minority soldiers with more serious wounds back. i had read that linville was tired of getting scripts that made him be the jerk all the time, but writers would not create any scenes where frank shows a redeeming side, and so he walked. if i had been given a script where i had to be an out and out racist, i would have insisted on a re-write or sued the company for damages to my career

I dislike the constant bullying of Capt Burns. Allen Alda was in my interpretation the creep of MASH.. Hawk Eyes was constantly forcing himself on Nurses. Women are not stupid. Once Hawk Eye got the reputation as a leach, then Women would avoid him like the plague. Women are not going to let a character like Hawk Eye get over on them. The show MASH suspended the saying about "A woman scorned" Hawk Eyes constantly bulled Burns, was disgusting. The ratings of the improved after Burns was replaced by Winchester, because Winchester had some redeeming qualities. Show was popular despite Hawk Eye.

In my opinion, M*A*S*H has to be the most overrated tv series in history. The first three seasons are the best, then it really became the Alan Alda show and took itself way to seriously. I liked Trapper John, Henry Blake and Frank Burns and despite his character being a jerk I felt sympathy for him. And Hawkeye was always extremely obnoxious and bullying towards Frank, so much so I felt sorry for him. They didn't let Frank Burns grow as a human being.

How would Major Burns have interacted with Major Winchester? Both had an arrogant streak but Charles was smarter than Frank and was a far superior surgeon. But as the series went on, Charles showed what a kind heart he had, whereas Frank was like, as Hawkeye put it, "a major pretending to be a doctor". Frank was a competent surgeon at best but was more military than medical and very by the book. I'd say Frank and Charles would be very incompatable, and would have arguments in the OR. Regardless, there were moments Frank showed he could have a kind heart also, if he could get around military regulations, like that abandoned toddler in the early years, when Trapper wanted to adopt him. Both Frank and Charles could give a bad first impression and both took getting used to

It's got to be difficult having to play the jerk, the butt of the jokes, in an ensemble comedy like "M*A*S*H"; to have to be dumb when everyone else is so smart. (How would you like to make your living being called Ferret Face?) It probably also doesn't help you get future work, except more jerk work. It's equally dangerous career-wise for an actor to walk away from a steady paycheck. What's really sad in Larry Linville's case is that, according to Jackie Cooper, who directed many episodes during the first two seasons, he was the nicest, most cooperative actor on the set.

Linville's leaving did match up with the ending of the movie. The fact that he did try to separate himself from the TV caricature was a good effort, but I seam to remember his other TV caricatures as being also a type of the same kind as Burns. To bad for a classicaly trained actor.

MASH wasn't quite as exciting and entertaining without the character of Frank Burns. He was so outrageous and unpredictable. The only flaw that I could see in MASH, was that I found it rather unrealistic that anyone as dim witted as Frank Burns would be capable of performing major surgery.

I can assume Larry was confused with Frank around LA in the mid 1970s. Hey look....its Frank Burns. It can be assumed Larry made one last attempt to have Gelbart and Reynolds change Franks evil arc in the series. I can suppose Loretta Swit who was a close friend also concurred with Larry's request. They probably thought Larry would resign and balked at his idea. As it was they probably hired David Ogden Stiers to a much cheaper entry contract saving the production money.

At the time of his departure (many years ago), the story was that Johnny Carson was about to retire after twenty years on the show and Larry Linville (a common guest host) was pimped as being a shoe-in as a replacement. When Linville left MASH to be available to The Tonight Show, he was boned by Carson, who decided to stay another ten years. The network tried to throw him a bone by giving him a show entitled "Hello, Larry" which was painful to watch and didn't last long. I can only imagine that he wished he hadn't left MASH.

Besides the wrong grave marker, I doubt that Larry would have wanted to be sprinkled off Bodega Bay... I spent 50 years in Marin County, and I myself am going to be sprinkled off of Bodega Bay! However, despite all the musicians and actors we had in Marin, I never heard of Larry Linville being there...

I never watched MASH in the '70s-- I watched no TV back then, not interested. Mid to late '80s I watched the reruns, quickly became a fan! Major Burns was a buffoon, and I thought his affair with "hot lips" Hoolihan was rather pitiful. One commenter, below, mentioned that his character was never expanded for more depth. True. Larry Linville was possibly more talented than his character allowed in the series. Shame. When he was replaced by Harry Sherman, I was elated! Was a fan of his from the old Dragnet series, when he starred as officer Bill Gannon along with Jack Webb's character of Joe Friday. Loved that show! Although MASH never allowed Linville's character any depth, I still think he cut off his nose to spite his face-- unsurprised he regretted that decision. Still: Col. Sherman Potter was a far better fit in the whole scheme. IMHO.

I don't like that Burns left. Even though he was an antagonist to what Hawkeye-Trapper-BJ expressed, he had charm and panache in his childish like idiocy especially his chemistry with Margaret. This Winchester character is kinda' of full of himself and doesn't fit the bunch.
