I watched an interview with a scientist who is pushing for us to explore Venus. He had a great point. It is the only Earth sized planet we will be able to get probes to for probably thousands of years to come. That alone has so much to teach us.

@spaceyou5819 only the surface. As explained in this video, 50km above the surface pressure is ~1atm and temps ~50°C. Hot, yeah, but something humans can survive for short periods of time unaihed. Besides, you can always use air conditioning if you don't mind burning some energy. You can lower the temp inside into 40°C and then it's just like most tropical zones in the planet. Isaac Arthur has several videos on colonizing Venus

If there really are floating bacteria on Venus that use UV light as power source, i'd be more interested in doing some genetic engineering to either add that power to the plants we already have, or to turn these Venerean bacteria to become another set of "chloroplasts", so our plants can extract nutrition off another wavelength. That way, these plants would produce more food and air with same amount of sun light than regular ones

If hypothetical earth becomes inhabitable or gets destroyed for some reason, Mars is the most likely short-term option due to its solid surface, easier landing/launching capabilities. Venus could be a better long-term home if we develop floating city technology, thanks to its Earth-like atmospheric conditions at high altitudes, better gravity, and stronger radiation protection. Mars first, Venus later-if technology allows.
@JosePineda-cy6om
@JosePineda-cy6om Күн бұрын
I'd say both!!! Venus' floating habitats don't require any science fiction material. You can make the blimps from PVC (resists sulfulic acid) or kevlar coated with gold. Glass for the hydroponics area - it's also acid resistant, and plants will LOVE the almost 2x bigger sun, shining with 50% more power. Breathable air floats in Venus, you can fill blimps with that - or you can use hydrogen, even pure oxygen. The only limiting factor is access to metals, it's really difficult to get stuff from the bottom of the quasi-ocean of super-critical CO2. The people living in the blimps will have to use ropes, wood and fabric for most stuff, reserving exotic materials coming from Earth/Moon only for really important stuff. They could easily raise some animals as well, if oxygen and nutrients are managed appropriately!!
@Pisti846
@Pisti846 Күн бұрын
The problem is a Venusian colony can never be self-supporting because we would never be able to get raw materials from the surface due to heat and pressure. At least on Mars we could live underground and access raw materials and water. On Mars we could traverse the surface while wearing suits.
@ronyedin
@ronyedin 16 сағат бұрын
@@Pisti846 The biggest challenge for a long-term Mars colony is oxygen. Without a reliable nitrogen source, sustaining life and agriculture would be difficult. While Mars has valuable raw materials, a better solution might be a Venus-Mars system? Venus could be the primary habitat, with floating cities offering Earth like gravity, radiation protection, unlimited solar power, and access to nitrogen and CO2 for oxygen and water production. Mars could serve as an industrial hub, providing metals and raw materials. With asteroid mining as a supplement, combining Venus’ habitability with Mars’ resources could make a Venus based civilization much more viable. It really depends on how Earth is destroyed. The timeline and severity of the event would determine whether we have the time and resources to extract what we need and establish sustainable colonies elsewhere. If we can extract resources from Earth after its destruction, it could help sustain a Venus or Mars system.

I am a huge supporter of the exploration of Mars. But earth will always be more habitable than Mars.
@JosePineda-cy6om
@JosePineda-cy6om 13 сағат бұрын
@@Pisti846 The cons/pros of Venus and Mars are the exact opposite of each other. That's why i always commend people interested in the subject to watch Isaac Arthur's series on colonizing both. The biggest drawback of Mars is radiation and lack of atmosphere, so colonies necessarily have to be subterranean as well as food production. Any transit thru the surface increases your risk of cancer, plus the risk of dying from an anteroid hitting you. On Venus none of these problems exist. Venus' colonies could build lots of stuff using just wood, fabric and ropes, given plants will grow really well - the limiting factor for them is metals. At 50km high in Venus air, you still have 100km of dense air above you to protect you from radiation and asteroids, you don't really need a spacesuit to get out of the blimp for repairs - only clothes wade from facid resistant fibers and an ice cold bucket dorpped onto you before you get out.
@MastaStacka
@MastaStacka Күн бұрын
0:44 not entirely true it's actually the exact opposite. The closer you are to the sun, the more fuel you need to slow down when reaching the planet. Hence very few missions to Mercury.
@JosePineda-cy6om
@JosePineda-cy6om Күн бұрын
If you're breaking using fuel alone, yes. But if you use solar sails, they get exponentially better the closer you're to the star - ovon the high gain transmission antenna can be used as a make-shift solar sail, dramatically reducing the costs. And flytime to/from Venus is just 2-3 months, as opposed to half a year for Mars

@ they kinda have - one of th missions to Mercury used the high gain antenna to break using both solar wind and bouncing photons, reducing the need for fuel. This trick was a nice collab between Carl Sagan and Beppi Colombo, the Italian scientist focused on Mercury in whose honor the Beppi Colombo mission to the inner solar system was named. And yes, this probe also uses the high gain antena as a discount version of a solar sail, you get breaking power for "free" just by pointing the antenna in the right direction

See inhabiting Venus would be cool, but seriously dangerous. Plus having floating cities isn't that good of an idea, but I get it, they're trying to make inhabiting this planet possible. It would mostly be like living in a blimp, I love to see the sky through some heat resistant windows as we're flying, but then you got to think about daytime and night time, and all these other problems that will occur. I know that we are also doing this for science, and it may lead to breakthroughs, but there are better ways of doing this.
