Simon & Garfunkel hit the top of the charts with their 1966 album "Sounds of Silence," which featured the hits "I Am a Rock" and "The Sound of Silence." The folk rock duo, comprised of Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel, is arguably best known for 1968's "Mrs. Robinson," a huge hit from the soundtrack to Mike Nichols' movie "The Graduate." So why did Simon & Garfunkel call it quits shortly after, in 1970? Did a relatively obscure follow-up movie from Nichols really lead to the breakup of what may be the most successful folk music duo of all time? This is the real reason Simon & Garfunkel broke up.

Not all musicians in bands or groups that rise to fame will get a long. A lot of reasons is creative differences or too self-centered. Simon & Garfunkel is a prime example.

Two brilliant minds venturing two different directions is a recipe of disaster. Unfortunately, it happened with these days though they would both have successful solo careers in the end but would struggle to reconnect in the future despite a 1975 NBC's Saturday Night appearance and their only post breakup single, "My Little Town".

People are human. It is interesting they split relatively around the same time the Beatles did their last performance together on Apple roof. Rough few years for music I guess.

@@Gibbo1 if they were only going to be together for a few years the should have never gotten together in the first place.even though their music was good they did not make a good amount of it to rely matter in the long run imo.my point if they had this much trouble working together they should have never gotten together.

When Paul Simon was playing coffee houses in England nobody knew who he was. It was the JOINT recording of the Sounds of Silence that made them stars. Arts incredible voice was a huge part of their success. Many love their work together much more than Paul Simon’s solo work. The recent documentary Restless dreams shows how vindictive Paul Simon seems to be. The 2016 independent biography has many examples of him not giving proper credit for songs where he used other writers work. He can’t stop bashing Art Garfunkel. Agree he has huge ego issue.

That IS sad; instead of greeting each other, “Wow! That was AWESOME! How have you been doing? Want to get together for a ‘reunion tour’ (or something)”, they just ignored each other and were quietly jealous of one another... Sad!

Let’s be honest, though they had some great music, ultimately Paul didn’t really need Garfunkel. Paul’s solo material is arguably better, or as good as anything they produced together.

That wasn’t it. It was Paul’s ego mostly

@@tbonesteak1481 and you know that from personal experience…? What I wrote was my own perspective, but if I wrote songs even half as good as Paul I’d be pretty confident in my abilities as well, some might mistake said confidence for "ego." I also personally know someone who worked with Garfunkel and said he was a nightmare. So maybe that had something to do with it…?

I think you totally just dismissed the harmonies of Simon and Garfunkel. How do you even do that, pretend it didn't exist? Weird. They were better together. Period.
@andyscott5277
@andyscott5277 2 ай бұрын
@@vaskylark there wouldn’t even be any harmonies without Paul’s melodies. Take out Garfunkel’s harmonies, and the songs are still amazing. A session singer could have sang Garfunkel’s parts, and the songs would have been equally successful.

@brianpratts both had an ego, that's true. But this says a lot - "on being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Garfunkel thanked Simon for the good times, labelling him “the person who most enriched my life by putting those songs through me”. To which Simon responded, “Arthur and I agree about almost nothing. But it’s true, I have enriched his life quite a bit.” " I'm perhaps a little personally biased, not knowing Art at all and know the things I do about Paul. But his is a massively over inflated ego.
