I seriously doubt that people who made money from skating ever had this mentality. All they wanted was to have the best possible video parts,to get on top no matter what and with that money followed. So many legendary pro's from the 90's were absolutly broke and came to california with nothing and skated for years before they saw any money. You just have to really really want it,have talent and understand the industry good enough. Jamie Thomas,Marc Johnson,Chad Muska. These people were literarly homeless while trying to make it. And most people didn't like Jamie. But when you are so driven,when you have such strong video parts you become undeniable. The obsession has to take over becasue in most cases you will not be around the people who will make it easier for you.

It shouldn’t have to be like that. It’s so far behind, no scholarships, few pathways outside of the major cities. Skaters need to stop taking scrapes.

You know, as a skater I know I won’t ever skate rails or learn some crazy tech tricks but one thing that I will know is to be a skater that has a different approach like William Spencer. I will use this different approach to reach an audience that does not skate. I haven’t started to record my ideas but when I start school, it will be in the works. Trust me… I’ll look back at this and remember what went through my head after watching this video. Thank you for putting the time and effort into this.

The real reason is if you want money from skateboarding, you need to learn flip tricks in and flip tricks out of your grinds or slides. Little kids are getting huge air and doing 900's. You have to help take skateboarding to the next level if you wanna get paid.

It is like every other exceptional thing in this day and age: your place of birth and networking abilities can hold you back significantly. Im from michigan. Ive seen people skate at a professional level (kickflip indys, mctwists, kick flipping in and out of every trick on street, etc.) that never make it out of the state. They might get some love on social media, but thats about it. Its sad, but i guess it explains why so many kids in the midwest are so apathetic now

When I did my pilgrimage to SF in January 95 I hooked up with a network of guys who were migrants from Illinois and Michigan and who all had regular jobs. Only a select few were making a full time living from skating. I think it kept things genuine. When the Shecklers and Nyjahs started grifting I knew the art form had become a commerce.

*The REAL reason: You cant BET.* There's no gambling behind skateboarding so the only money in it is through clothing brands, which hardly need any promotion especially today. @Dadbot3 ай бұрын
This is exactly what separates pros from joes. You have the wrong view. YOU make your dreams a reality. Not society. It’s how badly you want it. If you’re willing to stop trying because of the low rate of success than ofcourse you’ll never be successful. My oldest son wants to be in the NFL. I live in Canada on a very small island where it feels like his dream is impossible. But I don’t ever want him to think or know that. One thing that always gets overlooked in sports is the competitive mindstate. Pro athletes are not okay with losing or failing. They do lose. And they do fail. But they don’t let it be the reason they stop trying to win. They like winning more. I started skating at 35. And by the time I was 37 I was already sponsored by one of my local shops. It’s not impossible man. You just have to want it more than anything.

Pros made more money / fame when skateboarding wasn’t at the forefront of demand in social media , if you aren’t t having communication/ connection/ community , posting clips/have demand of tricks , relevance / popularity you will fall out the scene , that’s with every Skater not just pros. skateboarding in the 2020’s to the future wil be only provide for the selective privileged ones .. I see more rich skaters than poor/ middle cass skaters in parks now & days it’s sad. It has no culture / future I have a fear skating will be like how soccer is.

Skateboarding industry needs to learn from the PGA. Market the individual and not the brand. Doesn’t matter what brand Tiger wore. People just wanted to wear what the best golfer did. Skateboarding puts the brand first. And builds teams around that. But the average person doesn’t cheer for a brand. They want to cheer for their favorite golfer (skater). Girl was as successful as they were/are for this exact reason. Their team wasn’t made up of just “good” skaters. That team was made up of the BEST skaters. And the company blew up because of it. No one followed Koston because he was on girl. Vice versa. They followed Girl because Koston. The olympics will help a lot for this. As all its focus is on the skaters and not the brands

Skateboarding is all about image, aesthetics, and identity. I think what you're talking about only works in a contest setting. You're also forgetting that with the Girl and Chocolate part of the appeal was the artistic approach to the videos.

Anybody can pick up a skateboard and practice alone so its not hard to learn lol. Not everyone can pick up boxing gloves or a baseball bat or tennis racket and train alone. You need coaches and other players to train with. Those are the sports where money is involved because there are more factors that play into it.

@letsgooo16373 ай бұрын
The downfall will eventually lead to retarded brands like NB, Addidas, Nike to run away and pros will get their brain back and realize their industry is meant to be small and ran by small companies doing it for the right reasons. Selling out is good individually, but collectively it's terrible. especially true in an industry where style and creativity is so subjective. There's guys out there doing ollies and kickflips I could watch all day over some Shane Oneill throwing down the flavour of the week robotically over a 12 stairs.

Why? Don’t you think skateboarding deserves the same amount of love any other sport gets? Yes we do it because we love it but that doesn’t mean we can’t make money off of the things we love doin
@tracphonevirtualmagazine3 ай бұрын
@ryanuriebuxton I don't think it really deserves the same amount because the bar to entry isn't as high. If skateboarding worked the same way, like basketball, golf, and NFL the the experience wouldn't be the same. Anyone can shoot a photo, start a brand, or film content. And it works better that way because it's not centralized.

The real problem is what's supposed to be the main revenue source of pros, royalties for their pro board model, they just don't add any real value or incentivization for customers to buy them. The only people that are braindead enough to be like "OH I KNOW HIM HE'S GOOD SKATER I WANT HIS BOARD" are young stupid children. The only person that comes close to actually adding value is Andy Anderson because he actually worked on the specifics of the design and actually offers something that's a bit different than every other board out there. The pro name on the board is literally the last thing I care about when buying a board. All I am looking for is shape price functionality and lastly the graphic. I really couldn't give 2 shits if some pro skater's name is on my board or not, and really it's actually just a cringy and wierd concept. I don't want to be promoting some random dude I'll never meet that has nothing to do with me
@justinmusicandskateboardin92823 ай бұрын
Even the entire concept of sponsorships is kind of ridiculous. Who out there actually makes decisions based on... "well does pro skater X use this brand? That's the only way I think it's the best kind" Like people just have no ability to discern and test things for themselves and make up their own mind
@ls.c.56823 ай бұрын
I'm not really sure about that. For example, as a late teen and early 20-something I'd almost always buy girl/chocolate boards because I liked the team, I liked their videos and the whole image of the brand and how they presented skateboarding - the trick selection and the vibe of the brand. The shapes were generally a little flatter with less concave so they fit my taste regarding skateboarding. I'd also buy any Flip deck as i knew the shapes and wood were good and I always wanted to support Tom Penny in any way. Most pros do in fact give the general guidelines for the kind of board they want to skate - width, fat nose, etc
@ryanuriebuxton3 ай бұрын
Now a days having a model doesn’t mean much in terms of sustaining a healthy amount of money in your pockets. Prod said on a podcast with mikey taylor that primitive isn’t doing as great as it once was or should have been and that’s primitive..
@ryanuriebuxton3 ай бұрын
In the late 90s to early 2000s the reason skaters made so much money and “being pro” was such a big deal was because of the way everything was marketed. There was only one way to get content from big companies such as girl/chocolate and that was thru skate videos or skate demos. With social media and the market now a days everything is so fast paced and is so easily attainable that the top company’s can be overshadowed by just about any person with a phone.

@AnneALias literally the whole point of this video is why there is no money and its because you don't have enough outside viewers and supporters of skateboarding. Let me ask you something. Do these skaters offer money they make on these videos to the land owners they capture their little toy tricks on? I'm actually a supporter of skating, I don't skate and I'm a paying member at the nine club podcast. So I'm not a hater, but what I'm saying is facts.
