What about battery swapping? EV manufacture Nio is probably starting a trend that is far more likely to be the future model for EVs for many people, but especially for people who travel a lot, tow a lot, commute a lot and who do not live in a home with a charger. Why carry around a huge battery when people average 30 miles a day in commuting? This is incredibly wasteful and inefficient. It would be far better for people to drive with a 40kWh battery, and when they need to travel or tow then they can upgrade batteries by swapping to a high capacity battery. This also means people can swap the battery in 2-3 minutes instead of charging forever. It also gives third party suppliers the option of producing batteries to swap into cars and providing swapping stations.

If you ever took apart a Scalextric car as a kid, you will instantly recognise the skateboard layout. Ergo, GM did not invent the concept, they adapted it.

I would love to hear how Tesla plans to service the new batteries! The current modular design is great for servicing the battery pack. You just drop down the battery pack and change the module that is damaged or has suffered a drop in capacity. This way the battery pack's life can be as long as the rest of the car's with just a few changed modules during the years. With the new design, the whole car might have to be scrapped when one cell's capacity drops or it gets damaged. Or at minimum I guess you will have to cut the whole battery open, take out the foam, replace the damaged cell, and then weld the whole thing together again, which seems expensive.

I have never heard of Tesla battery packs having individual cells replaced. As far as I am aware they replace the battery pack as a whole if you have a problem. Are you speculating that this is what they do or do you have concrete evidence that Tesla will replace individual failed cells?

@@AbnormalAspirations I actually only know that other car brands change individual modules (cheaper than changing the whole battery), while they will not change individual cells. I don't know if Tesla does this with their current models. What I was referring to in my comment was that the new design does not seem to have modules, so you would have to identify and change the damaged cells, which seems more difficult.

​@@mlight7402 these batteries are designed to reach a million miles, or more depending on the way you treat them. It's crazy, I know, but that is the results some tests have seen in the present. This will only get better in the near future. And I do believe Tesla has a really comprehensive warranty coverage for owners of unmodified vehicles. All in the name of allowing for peace of mind.

A good researched video. Frans looked very young. As BMW is still having vehicles either with ICE and BEV they dont use this concept I suppose. Whats needs to be added, Tesla is pre manufacturing component which will be added at the end. Connected through a (wireless) bus with identification. Also I think the mechanical and connucication interface will be defined and you cannot put just different colors together (as painting is nit done with the carossiery). Maybe an interface to build different vehicle types.

@@thedave7760 t was a Demo drive in a service center, in Spain. I had just 30 minutes and the temperature was comfortable, so I didn't need to use the heat pump. I drove in the city. The acceleration is crazy, something to live. And what I enjoyed the most is the silence inside the car. That's awesome and priceless

Tesla is working on their 3rd platform now for cybertruck and their 15k next gen vehicle. The keh innovation relates back to the original gm skateboard. Steer by wire. No drive shaft, no steering column, all by wire. Put that on top of the structual battery pack skateboard design and you can now build the whole car in modules and then just connect them together at the end. This is how they expect to cut costs of manufacturing in half. Since they can build each module in its own optimized assembly line including painting outer body parts and just assemble the final car at the end. This means fewer robots and fewer workes are needed and shorter assembly lines which means faster and cheaper assembly which mean cheaper cars.

Don't be fooled. It may make it much cheaper for them to create, but they will just say it's new advanced technology and sell it for more. There will never be a $15k Tesla vehicle. Maybe $25k, but never $15k.

@@phanna7492 you can burn alive in your gas car as well. Gasoline burns too. Diesel less so, so I guess you can buy only diesel vehicles then. Regardless not buying a EV because batteries can burn is a like not getting on a plane because they something crash. There is some logic to it but it's mostly paranoia at best and just an excuse to not admit something about yourself at worst.

​@@ericblanchard5873 I don't believe I've ever heard $15,000.00 however I could see them getting a razor type of vehicle or a personal mobility strictly a single-person commuter type of vehicle pretty close to that.

@ChasL I agree, a side by side would be probably around $15k if they decided to build one and mass produce it. They definitely have the money to build side project vehicles like this, like the ATV is supposed to come out around the time of the Cybertruck but we've heard no news on that, they only made very small ATV's for small kids that go slow like a power wheels you buy from walmart etc.

So this battery pack essentially cannot be repaired or replaced? If something goes wrong, or the pack ages out, all you can do is throw away the entire pack, or even the entire car? It's the equivalent of Apple's glue-in laptop and ipad batteries. How is this good?

It will be more difficult than changing an ICE engine but it ought to be possible to drop out the structural battery pack. But what do I know. I would appreciate information on this from one who is qualified to give it.

Reducing overall weight and manufacturing efficiency is always a good thing. I am curious if this will help or hurt the ability of a repair shop to fix a Tesla vs. having to total it out after an accident.

Body damage is incredibly expensive to repair. The chassis design does not make the body cheaper. The cybertruck body is the solution. Use a paint free durable exterior material that resists damage from minor, but costly fender benders. The chassis still maintains signigifcant salvage value after the is deemed totalled.

When a cell goes bad in Lightning you only replace the module it is in. Not the whole pack. Structural pack must translate into higher insurance once a few companies start paying for their replacement.

I can't help but notice the similarities between electric RC cars and Teslas modular design, Especially Traxxas X-Maxx has a very similar basic modular design, with the exception that it still needs a drivetrain due to its single motor limitation.

Wow, it has improve efficiency in manufacturing side. So how would you repairing, remove, and/or replacing the battery pack in the near future? When there is a battery issue in a minor accident, new battery technology upgrade, and degradation after 7-10yrs.

They aren't very repairable. I assume that Tesla has perfected its manufacturing to have a very low failure rate in the batteries, so there won't be high warranty costs for the company and Tesla assumes that its autonomy features will avoid a lot of accidents. However, I wouldn't buy a Tesla precisely because how hard it will be to fix in the future. Tesla doesn't allow non-certified repair shops to buy its replacement parts, and the few shops that are Tesla certified charge very high rates to do repair work. With structural battery packs and gigacasting, I suspect that it will be very expensive to repair the car, since you have to replace so much of the car, so normal accidents will result in totalling the car.

I can't see a use case for electric vehicles, but love the innovation in manufacturing tech that Tesla provides. Let's adopt that design philosophy for ICE and we'll be onto a winner.

Much as the battery in your phone? In much the same way I'm guessing that it is so much cheaper to produce that if it is reliable enough it overall becomes cheaper to throw the whole car away when the odd pack fails. The only issue is who takes the risk, Tesla or the customer. I would also hazard this is why second hand EVs are cheap right now.

In business, if you outsource you often will not have the best. If you in-house develop you often are spending more to create the best. So, anything in-house developed(apple software, apple cpu) is often heavy expenditure, but highest quality/best in the industry.

The platform concept is not new. It is used by almost all car companies for ice cars. VW group shares platforms for different cars within an brand and even between their brands. To name it surfboard is just the new, fancy name for the battery platform.

Long-term operational function is the goal. I have been looking for a method where the battery modules can be slid out, like a drawer, so the old battery can be lifted out and recycled, a new battery is placed back in the open space, and the drawer is slid back into place. This new plan seems to make it well nigh impossible to change the battery.

Because the Leaf was not built on a skateboard platform. They were built using a conventional car design.

7:42 "It required zero cooperation from the fossil fuel industry..." That's a pretty strong statement given the amount of fossil fuels that went into producing it. There's still a lot of plastics / polymers in a Tesla. A lot of the power delivered to the Gigafactories is still derived from fossil fuel power plants. The parts going into a Tesla are still made from raw materials gathered using equipment mostly created and powered by fossil fuels. The entire logistics of global supply is still almost entirely fossil-fuelled. Elon makes it very plain that he's not trying to stop the fossil fuel industry. He even goes so far to say we should speed up our consumption of fossil fuels, under the premise that accelerating our economy with more energy will simply result in us developing and rolling out green economy infrastructure at scale sooner, because we need the power to do the work and we don't have the green power to spare, yet.

@@sphigel1 That isn't a "but" from my POV... You're supporting me by saying that there's no problem... Tesla is just doing business as usual. I think Kevin meant that Tesla was moving ahead with zero *help* from the Fossil Fuel industry. Help and cooperation are not exactly the same thing. If the Fossil Fuel industry actually made the effort to provide zero cooperation, trust me, it would be an obstacle to Tesla's daily operations. That's why I said "zero cooperation" was going too far.

They've addressed the second issue with the new structural battery pack, so any crash bad enough to damage it would most likely total the car anyways. However I have to agree with you on the first one, they really need to work on their serviceability. It shouldn't Take months to get parts to repair a minor damage to the body.

First seen on the people car in WW2, also known as VW Bug original. Skateboard is a new name for an original VW bug chassis, it predate actual skateboards themselves, many a Hollywood movie and series car jump involved a VW pan [aka skateboard ] with a car kit bolted to the VW pan with a nitric oxide bottle, like night rider TV show.

I had the same modular idea back in 2001. I would build an electric car frame and be able to bolt on different kit car bodies from the 50s and 60s and make them inter changeable with a few modifications of pivot joints. I became busy with other work and I never got an investor.

It is not accurate to say that GM was unable to get the EV1 functioning correctly. They did a pilot program to see how it worked and to learn how drivers liked it. All the lessees loved the EV1 vehicles and they didn't want to return them when their short lease program expired. GM realized how popular the EV would be and how mass producing it would conflict with their ICE vehicles sales. Watch the documentary "Who Killed the Electric Car". It was the fossil fuel industry. Thomas Edison created an all electric Model T and presented it to Henry Ford Sr. as a gift to Ford's wife but Ford instead rejected it and warehoused it. Battery Electric Vehicles have been produced for as long as there have been gas powered automobiles produced. It is like VHS vs Beta. Beta was actually the better technology but VHS won the race to get to market sooner and became the mass production platform despite Beta being superior the platform. It is annoying to read and watch how most people leave out the most important point of the vehicle evolution and don't accurately mention the reasons why the adoption of gas powered vehicles stalled out the mass production of electric vehicles.

Yes but in the early days gas/petrol was clearly the superior technology. With only lead acid batteries and heavy primitive motors without rare Earth magnets, electric was slow, short range, under powered, expensive, and heavy. The most extreme comparison is looking at flying vehicles. Even with today's tech electric aircraft cannot even compete against the fuelled aircraft of a hundred years ago.

Or all body on frame vehicles? The unique attribute of GMs skateboard is removing the steering column, and going full drive by wire. Tesla isn't there yet, but it would go well with a full autonomous platform that could enable manual override with a wireless game controller.

Skateboard is a new name for an original ww2 VW bug chassis, it predate actual skateboards themselves, many a Hollywood movie an series car jump involved a VW pan [aka skateboard ] with a car kit bolted to the VW pan with a nitric oxide bottle, like night rider TV show.

in best case scenario, you never have to. One of the reasons they and many others are researching hard on making them near "immortal" (check for 1 mio miles battery)

The original tesla skate boar allowed for complete battery replacement in 15 minutes. The new improved design are built in and cannot be removed easily. Tesla is betting the battry will never be replaced and the cars will be totaled if there is any damage in an accident. You thus now have a disposable car.

My mechanic told me if the engine of my 15 year old truck needs replacing it will cost as much as the truck is worth due to labor cost. It would be great to be able to swap out parts like Lego.

@@BadenHealth The key is labor costs. Contemporary cars are primarily NOT designed to be repaired by their operators, but to be maintained by the dealership. Take for instance the jeep willy scout car in WW2 was designed that it could be shipped in a single crate, assembled by untrained soldiers, operated, maintained and repaired by them in the field. They don't make them like that anymore, granted you probably wouldn't want to drive that daily anyhow. If there exists a balance of safe, economic and comfortable vehicle with ease of maintenance and repairs, I'm still looking. Usually though you only need to look at what older cars you still see on the road in higher numbers. It's self evident which cars were built to last or easy to maintain.

So the cells are glued in to a compartment that is a structural component of the vehicle which in essence writes off the vehicle when it's performance degrades over time and use.

it is true that it's not economically feasible to replace the battery pack in this latest iteration, but battery degradation is not an issue. The latest data on the Model S/X battery performance showed only a 12% degradation after 200,000 miles. That's longer than most cars will ever drive before being scrapped and you still have 88% left. And that's with older battery technology.

with the electro magnetic technology why would the wheels not have a self charging efect as they turn? they do it woith the braking effect? they could double the number of wheels on the rear that would augment the charge effectiveness? who knows? ( a generator on each wheel ? add a high end capacitor to store the energy?

Around the time of the 2020 battery day, Musk announced that because of the structural battery pack, 4680 cell, maxwell dry electrode tech, AND a new iron sodium chemistry, we may be looking at 1 million mile cars. At this point, it doesn't make business sense for car companies to actually sell the cars anymore because consumer demand for replacing these vehicles won't be there; especially when you consider over the air updates. As a result, Tesla (and others like BMW) are looking at converting the car into a platform: consumers make an initial upfront purchase but then pay a subscription for various car-services. In 2020, it sounded like Tesla was actually looking at eventually not even selling cars outright, instead they would operate an uber-like service where people would just pay them when they need a car. This would secure 1. acceleration towards electrified transit (i.e. Tesla's mission) and 2. ensure a constant revenue stream for Tesla

I feel like this is more efficient, but it is problematic for recycling batteries--giving them a second life in grid storage. It is also harder for repairing/replacing a bad battery; the whole car is scrapped.

What are you talking about, it's even easier to recycle now and get almost all the materials back from it; just grind the entire pack, submerge it in liquid and separate the materials by their individual float levels. When it comes to replacing the battery, no the whole car won't need to be scraped. All they need to do now is simply unbolt the entire structural battery pack From the front and rear castings (including the seats and other attachments obviously) and bolt in the new one with some finishing touches of course. For the case of reusing them as grid storage, it won't be as flexible as the previous modular design where you could more easily retrieve individual cells and design the storage size to your exact needs, but it can still be used as a whole with some modded inverter and cooling systems to make a massive grid backup battery storage unit.

Well for one thing. Batteries can be changed. Second. In 300k km only around 10-20% Max Battery capacity loss. I don't see a problem with longevity here.

I own a 2018 model X that when delivered had 240 miles of range. 5 years later it has only 197 miles of range. Tesla says this is normal. I expect to have to replace at least some of the cells or modules in the next 3 years if I want to continue using this as my only vehicle. This new design looks like you have to replace the entire battery pack and mid frame to replace batteries. That is a step in the wrong direction of repairability. Pay me now or pay me later. I prefer a more repairable platform.

Problem with using the battery as the chassis means that it will always be damaged in an accident. Which is why there have been fires in them after accidents, sometimes even weeks later.

Building multiple cars on the same platform is nothing new and there are a number of examples such as the Nissan 370Z/Infiniti QX70, Fiat 124 Spider/Lada Riva, VW Touran/Audi TT and VW Touareg/Lamborghini Urus where vehicles use the same platform. The concept though has its restrictions, a Model S and Model Y are unlikely to ever have the same platform and with standardisation of large components, often it comes with compromise. Traditional ICE manufacturers went from using the basic platform that they used for their ICE vehicles on the EV vehicles to designing their EV's from the ground up. Where does the standard battery bed fit in with the vehicles that Tesla plan to build using a GigaPress?

Tesla is still using the dated Japanese cell design, it doesn't matter if they increase the diameter, the ratio of empty gap remains the same when you try to fit a circle into a square. not to mention that rolling the cells naturally lead to the inner edges aging faster than the outer age due to the angle of the folds being higher on the inner edge.

At this point, the majority of new Tesla cars are using prismatic LFP batteries made by CATL (and recently BYD). AFAIK, Tesla is only using the cylindrical form factor with nickel-based batteries, which need more cooling than LFP and LMFP.
