Hes really the only bell cow back in the league that even deserves the big contract, well him and chubb. The rest of the backs in the league are obviously great athletes but theyre production is such that can be replicated and interchangeable with any random back or atleast production close to them. The answer is that all of the evidence points towards the fact that running backs are profiteers of amazing offensive lines - and this is not just because the league is more pass heavy, this has been true pretty much the entire time, advance statistics has just revealed this to be the case recently. Everyone was paying attention to the guy holding the ball running through a hole while ignoring the five guys up front who actually made that hole. Simple.
@BlitzTaco

Paying running backs is a dangerous proposition for teams, they have short careers and their production is largely based on offensive linemen. Running backs have a shit job, run, block, pass until their bodies can't keep up. This is why running back by committee is so popular, and it makes sense. You can pay 3 guys who specialize in only one of blocking, rushing, or receiving while paying the lot less than a star would cost. WR and QB simply produce more for the offense than a single RB can offer. Unless rules are made to restrict the passing game, RB are not going to get paid relative to their work

Christian mcaffery are probably one of the reasons why running backs aren’t getting the bag. He got the biggest bag in running back history, then couldn’t stay healthy. That’s probably one of the reasons the owners don’t want to pay them.

RBs are still facing the most bumps and collisions. QBs are protected from most hits from DL & blitzes. RBs still face every defender once he’s got the ball. Expect to get hit often and early. Like a critical aviation part, RB is a limited service life position measured in Carrie’s per season and career. RB is the exemplar of next man up. RB by committee is the path forward because the OC can address the situation with different skill sets and fresh legs. And if one 800 yard RB goes down there’s another comparable and another just itching to play. And, 1,000 yard season (58,8 ypg for 17) doesn’t mean as much as it used to in even a 16 game season (62.5 ypg) much less than a 14 game season (71.4 ypg). A RB can have a 1,000 yard season at the 14 game pace but miss games. Three games can be the difference between 11-6 or 8-9.

The only way to increase a RB’s value is to have them do more. If a RB starts consistently throwing TD passes, I bet that’s the next step to someone at that position getting paid. Until Running Backs do more like they used to in the 50’s, it’s not going to change. Originally Fullbacks did the most work, Half Backs did the rest and QB’s were the last option. It’s all flipped exactly opposite now.

I’ll still go down saying that Kickers are the most important position in football. If you can find a kicker that hits from 65-70 consistently that changes the entire game top to bottom because now you only have to get to midfield and it’s 3 points almost every time. Opposing teams will have to gamble way more and take chances for turnovers because they won’t be able to keep up if you’re bagging 3 points every time the offense gets 2 1st downs. That’s the next thing I’m waiting to see in the NFL. The Kicker who can win an MVP award.

For RBs with truly superior receiving skills like McCaffrey or Barkley, why not just convert them to WR? They don't have the same wear and tear as if they are RB; WR are more valuable than RB in today's game; they get paid more and are happier; and you can still have them bust out a run once in a while if needed.

That might be a little extreme. The running game still is a viable way to move the ball. It changes things up and gives the defense another thing to worry about. On the other hand, look at the way Cordarrelle Patterson rejuvenated his career by switching to RB. He was a terrible WR, an excellent return man, and he doesn't have the mileage most RB's have at his age. You could be right, in that WRs built like him could be the next hybrid position. Interesting prospect.

I still say the Rock is missing the boat with the XFL. He and the team owners should invest heavily in the best NFL running backs and OL that likes to block for the run. I would watch because I love the running game and it would make his league look better and the NFL passing games would become a one trick pony. If you want to compete with the NFL (eventually) you can't make any headway continuing to play with their cast offs on offense and defense. I would have paid Bijan Robinson anything he wanted to come to the XFL. Ratings would skyrocket for his games on curiosity alone.

It feels like today, the public has an increased appreciation for linemen, with shows like Pat McAfee's In the Trenches, and with the rising popularity of guys like Jason Kelce, which in turn, lowers the appreciation for running backs, since the general opinion being that the linemen are nore important to a successful run game, and more and more front offices are leaning towards the opinion that a successful run game COMPLETELY hinges on the O-Line. I don't think that's 100% accurate, but I do feel that sone think it is.

Why? Why do teams need to subsidize a Position that is becoming less vital? Where was this when Fullbacks went extinct? I get it, I grew up with the Greats. Barry Sanders, Curtis Martin, Marshall Faulk. Tomlinson. These guys were their Offense...but Running backs now? Week 12 of this Season. In the Top 5 Rushers of the Week, how many had 20 Carries? One, Josh Jacobs had 20. Now let's go back to...2005? Not only were all the rushing stats higher, but only ONE of those Top 5 was under 20 carries and most in the high 20s. Fine, Let's say I'm cherry picking. Let's take another Random Year when we had Valuable Running Backs still. 2009 Week 12? Damn, still only Chris Johnson under 20 with 18 carries but an 8.6 avg. Let's try another, 2002? It can't be every season where they were used more every game and it's why they were paid more. Oh shit, yup still just one rushing leader with less than 20 carries. What you want is some kind of Pop Warner "Every kid plays atleast 10 plays" Rule in NFL Pay. The Running back is going the way of the Fullback. Maybe it comes back when defenses fall back too far defending the Pass, maybe it never comes back...but Running backs should be paid what they are worth, and it's how it always has been. The problem is sometimes your position loses value.

If a team gives its star running back his bag, they will inevitably be paying him to watch games on the sidelines in street clothes. In Zeke’s case, he held out of training camp to bully the Cowboys into giving him a large contract, which they did. So Zeke is responsible for the contract that was given to him. @Chewyfood

Basically as an RB you need to be good enough so that you are seen as quality, but not so great that the team needs to use their one franchise tag on you. Moreover, you need to have no ego and take the first deal that comes your way. You need to accept that you are never going to get paid like linemen or QB's. Miles Sanders knew what the market was, and he knew the Eagles weren't going to franchise tag him (they rarely do it, besides the fact that he was one of 20 players who were FA's), and he took the first deal he got. A running back is ONLY as good as the MEN blocking for him. When OJ Simpson broke Jim Browns record, he refused to go on television unless he came with his entire O line and introduce every single one of them. OJ had PERSPECTIVE. OJ also recalled the years BEFORE the NEW head coach came and made HIM the feature, drafting O line talent to peel open lanes for him to charge through. Eric Dickerson bought his entire O line RINGS when he broke the single season record (which still stands). Today's RB has a mental problem. We learned this with the Leveon Bell fiasco, we also saw Ezekiel Elliot play this "Imma hold out" game...sadly, the Cowboys caved and Elliot did perform...for a while. The Cowboys CUT him...that is how far he declined. RB's want to get paid for what they ALREADY got paid for. Imagine a contractor does a great job building your house for an agreed upon sum...but after he's done, he wants extra for doing what you already paid him for. i would like to say, there is also a trend when teams pay a RB, the next season or the season after they get hurt which begin teams doubting if that player is worth keeping. not defending all teams, just an insight nugget

You could solve all the salary issues in the NFL by having a PAY BY PRODUCTION system. Why don't they do that? It insures that players don't get lazy after big contracts, motivates players to win, and protects teams at the same time. Why not?

I have always said the RB position is a plug and play position. Yes every once in a while, you will find a special guy. If I were a GM, no way am I handing a RB $60M+ for 4+ yrs especially if they are like 25 or 26yrs old. I'll just keep drafting them. Majority of the RB's are at their best in the first 3 to 5yrs; just too much wear and tear on that position.

They aren't getting screwed...they are just becoming obsolete. Fullbacks went through the same thing. As their roles are diminished and their workloads get solit, they become less valuable. Runningbacks used to be the most involved player in the Offense after QB, now your Top Receiver is more involved than your Running Backs. You arent going to get the same paycheck when you aren't working the same hours anymore, why should they expect to?

The rules protecting WR’s TE’s and QB’s in the last 10 or so years has something to do with this too. It makes passing much easier. If a defensive player breathes too hard around a QB now it’s a penalty causing QB’s to last longer since they don’t get injured as much. Also WR’s and TE’s don’t have to worry about a Ronnie Lott type of safety blowing them up as they catch the ball.

There are a lot of very good young RBs stuck with contracts that are based on their draft position. The best veterans are still getting paid. The top 8 players at the RB position are averaging $12 million this season. There's a significant salary drop off after the top vets. It's more about the NFL exploiting their young players overall. Running backs just take the worst of it because few are drafted until the later rounds. Add in the physical abuse the position takes, and it's a really unfair system. Other professional sports leagues get away with the same stunt. MLB is actually the worst because all their young players are trapped for 5 or 6 years before the freedom of true free agency. Without a salary cap, baseball has become a league of rich and poor teams, with the "poor" teams profiting because 90% of their players make near the league minimum. The young players who excel on these teams are sold to the rich teams for more cheap young players in a never ending cycle. The only way this gets resolved fairly for the athletes is for the players unions to strike until this pro-company model pays it's younger talent its value.

We should really ask ourselves should this be the case. The postion that takes the most beating and has the lowest shelf life get paid like some of the worst in comparison. These players get signed to contracts just to get cut the next year. If they try to fight back and hold out it just destroy their reputation and half the time doesnt work. It's upsetting to see how not player empowered the nfl is in comparison to leagues like the nba.

Running backs don't matter any more. They will get paid only when a team's production goes down if that running back is not there. This is why QBs get paid so much. The replacement usually isn't any good. If so, you would do the same with QBs and play them until year 4 or 5 and draft another one. Also, do not forget that when we say running back, we are talking about halfbacks. The fullback position has totally been eliminated and has zero value. With combo dual threat QBs, the RB position may disappear altogether.
