Having a dysfunctional marriage, but refusing to get divorced just because of the stigma is just as nonsensical as thinking that getting married will FIX a dysfunctional relationship.

I don't think they got married to fix the relationship. They got married because of outside cultural pressures. Will felt like men need to be married in order to be successful. Jada felt she had to get married because of pressure from Will and her relatives. And it may be nonsensical in our view, but it happens all the time. As a society, we still hold marriage up on a pedestal as the best model of relationships. We criticize people who choose to stay single or unmarried. We criticize people who don't believe in monogamy. Things are slowly changing, but these are still the mainstream views and many people still feel like they have to comply with social pressures.

To add on from a man’s perspective, make sure the woman says I love you first and brings up marriage as well. I was grateful when my parents were honest about their failed marriage. I spent much of my childhood being pushed to "pretend along" that everything was normal and fine. Once they started being honest about their experience and mistakes, it was painful, but I felt liberated, because it validated my gut instincts that things hadn't been right. I don't think we can decide for Willow whether this is hurting or healing, only she can. This may be far less painful than sitting at home in silence having to tell the world everything's fine.

As someone who came from a family where both of my parents hurt each other in actions and words and still decided to stay together "for the children", I sympathize with the kids in this situation. It takes a toll on you mentally and emotionally having to deal with your parents marriage problems and it leaves a lasting impact into your adulthood when you're trying to figure out wtf a healthy relationship is supposed to be like.

My parents didn't have near the issues other couples had. But, nevertheless, I was much happier when they split. A lot of tension was relaxed. I still saw my dad often. It has lead me to dislike the whole "stay together for the sake of the kids". You are not necessarily doing your kids any favors. Splitting can possibly be for the sake of the kids. @goober112 K. Good for you. Not everyone has the luxury to be able to leave that kind of toxic situation, even when they're already an adult. Some people lack the will or strength to leave because they feel obligated to their parents. Even though I'm sure Jaden and Willow have the means to move out, they're stars in their own right, maybe family expectations or their own motivations won't let them leave. It doesn't make the situation any less awkward and uncomfortable for them, having their parent's problems publicly known to this extent.

The fact that Jada was unhappy on her wedding day and Will was like "don't worry about it, she'll get over it" is a large screaming red flag that he only cared about what he wanted and that she should have walked right out of there before the ceremony started. I was always on Team Will and thought Jada was a narcissistic cow, but I see now they are as bad as each other. My feeling is that she had the "affair" with that young guy (August?) and talked about it in depth to Will's face as a way of her "punishing" him for making her get married when she clearly did not want to. Regardless, that is one very toxic relationship with two people who have very different perspectives and are constantly trying to get their own way at the expense of the other person.

She may have been unhappy but she did make the active decision to get married, not just for will but for her mother. I agree Will should not have married such a woman, but I wouldn’t go as far as to call him a red flag. They already had a baby conceived. Im sure marriage was pushed especially due to this reason back then. Also marriage for women in their twenties is even conventional now, so I’m sure she was feeling the pressures twenty something years ago. She probably thought she would regret it in the future if she didn’t get married then. Even now, there’s so many people in their 40s, 50s just constantly looking because they thought they didn’t want to get married when they were younger but changed their mind as they grew older. Jada’s a smart calculative woman,. She weighed out the pros and cons and marriage won. She was an unhappy bride, but marriage was her decision

If we are all honest with our own selves and relationships, whether failed or current....they are all transactional in some aspect....emotional, financial, sexual, it’s all bartering, which is transactional. It’s part of the human survival instinct. Except the emotional part is not. It’s exponential. We all have it to some degree no matter who we are or where we are it has occurred. The difference is that for the most part this shit is private. What they have done is vicious over sharing and it’s gross. We all have enough of our own to deal with, each of us and our stories is unique and if you find a space that is specific to sharing, whether that’s a person or people or group that has invited your sharing KEEP IT PRIVATE my god. The entire world has no use for this much information about these people! we will never know them in real life it’s tooooooo much too much. Thank you Patrick I love all of your content.

The fact that August was Jaden's friend and had a relationship with his mom is so deeply disturbing
@phoenixgirl70
@phoenixgirl70 11 ай бұрын
I know it’s often talked about as friend, but I think Augustwas just helping Jaden with his music career. I think they were more acquaintances. And August was much older. But it’s more salacious to say Jada was with her sons friend, like some childhood kid. And damn, Will told August to go for it. They ( Will & Jada) weren’t even together. I think if it was Jadens “friend” Will would have thought of how his son felt. And there’s definitely more to Wills history with women as alluded during their red table talk. But Will cannot be seen as not perfect in his own eyes. He thought only a “happy marriage image” was good for HIS career. Seems he was much more selfish than we thought. I mean the wedding, the 40th party wasn’t for her, he admitted it was for him. I’m over the “poor Will” stuff. He got everything he wanted. The fantasy fake life.

I hid my little sister under the bed against the wall incase one of them came in and reached under the bed looking for someone to throw onto the bed and beat the living daylights out of. My parents stayed together because they enjoyed the lavish lifestyle of both incomes. Yep, those new cars and fancy appliances were worth every day of them hiding those bruises & scratches and lying about how one of their kids is mysteriously injured again... My Dads dead now (he ended up on a pension long ago due to poor health) and my mother's in a care home due to stage 4 dementia. She doesn't know who I am some days and when she does, she keeps asking me when Dad will be home from work tonight. My sister and I lived like we were walking on eggshells our whole lives and they tried to blame US for their selfish choice? It would be laughable if my sister wasn't so incredibly damaged. I think being autistic protected me enough to help me function. Saying you "stayed for the kids" can be a great cover story for "I'm a self centred, selfish person who now happens to have kids". Not everyone is suffering in a bad relationship. A parents job is to protect their children and they BOTH failed. My sister and I have raised good kids at least, so that's something.

@inmyOWN_world My parents stayed together FOR MONEY. Luxury items - not survival mind you. My sister and I were abused daily - as well as watching them abuse each other. Then we had to act normal in public. You ever seen a telephone ripped out of a wall and thrown at someone's head? I was 8 years old and I had no idea that was possible. My mum ducked it with ease and just threw her nail file off the coffee table at him. It was almost like they ENJOYED the fights. I just shoved my oblivious sister under the bed and told her to shut up because I might be a scrawny, little girl but at least they wouldn't reach for her after beating the daylights out of me. My Dad died broke and my mums in a home with stage 4 dementia. The money didn't last as long as they thought. My mother might be alive but she's dead to my sister and I. My sister actually blocked out our entire childhood, but at least with autism my long term memory is phenomenal so I can try and remember anything happy to tell her to give it back to her I guess. That's not really what siblings should have to do for each other, but it's not like we could choose our parents.

Both Will and Jada had abusive fathers. Wills father was extremely abusive to his mother. He once punched her in the face so hard that she spit up blood. Will was very young and not being able to protect his mother made him feel like a coward. He felt like he failed his mother. Will said his father was his hero but his father was also the source of his greatest pain. Will has had to work through a lot of childhood trauma just like Jada, who was abused by her father and then raised by a mother and step father who were functioning drug addicts. Will said he started to tell jokes and be entertaining because if his father was laughing then he wouldn’t hit his mother. That’s a lot of weight for a child. Will deconstructs the persona “Will Smith” that he created initially to protect his mother in his KZbin special “The Best Shape of My Life”. The Will Smith that he presents to the world is very funny, kind, entertaining and able to make a lot of money for himself and others. He realized that Will Smith, the persona, ignored and couldn’t even see the feelings of others. He realized that what helps him to be disciplined and good at his craft was a level of persistent control that was harming his wife and kids. In his KZbin special he started working with a very good therapist to help him confront his issues. Both Will and Jada are human. There is no villain in their story. They are now coming back together as healthier people just as they had always planned to do. Thank you Patrick for making such a balanced video. The trend online is to paint Jada as a villain and Will as a simp when neither are accurate descriptions of who they are.

Totally agree. Both are losers in life who made unwise choices (regardless of childhood issues (my father was and is an alcoholic) and are "stuck" with the consequences, and by that I don't mean they can't get divorced, but they created two kids who have become scary lost confused creatures left to raise themselves because they can see their parents are so screwed up. So while Jada and Will could busily indulge in their ID and ego and etc., they forgot they have two precious children who need parents not besties.

It's no mistake; people made that narrative. Will Smith has been a well liked and appreciated actor for decades, whereas Jada's career was much more low key. Plus, she's a black woman who does her own thing. People have been labeling her as weird and crazy since the 90s for doing pretty normal independent stuff. I'm glad Willow hasn't gotten the same public treatment. All this being said, she's definitely not exempt from all that she's done. It's just super clear that she was demonized a lot more than the uncriticizable Will Smith.

The talk about having money, being young and hot and being able to have anyone, yet being unhappy, can be applied to so many people and speaks volumes about that person. They don't have self fulfilment. Their entire identity is based on something that isn't sustainable and will never be completely attainable. You have to find your own happiness, inside. You have to understand, appreciate and respect yourself. If you depend on money, fame, attractiveness, or whatever else that's decided by society and sources beyond your control to make you happy, it'll never happen. You'll just be stuck living as a puppet, with everything in life decided by your relevance and what you can offer to everyone. I wish more people would do themselves a favor and live on their own terms, not the world's.

The lesson I learned is always be in a place where I'm needed, loved, respected and cherished as much as I give in, even if it's a relationship or a job.🎉 And the fact that u can be the juiciest peach in the world and still there can be someone who hates peach.😅😅😅😅 So, don't take rejection personal, cuz sometimes it can be a blessing in disguise. 😊😊

One thing that sticks out to me is Will’s idea that he is at his best when he’s working for the benefit of a woman. That’s something I’ve struggled with being raised by a single mom and having to protect her, blah blah blah. So I get it. But it’s wrong and it holds you back. Nowadays I try to push myself because I wanna be my best self for me. I hope Will gets there eventually.

This video is so great and has clarified a lot for me! She was unhappy before and he is now. They just don't work together, but Will seems absolutely obssessed with the relationship. She clearly never loved him and just went along with it and he refuses to accept defeat because he's that self absorbed. I don't get why she stays.

Jada knew Will wasn't a monogamous man, she knew she wasn't a monogamous woman if there's one thing I can agree with her on, it's that them getting married never made any sense. Them staying married makes even less sense.

I really liked will, was always impressed by his talent and how well spoken he is, now im just so sad to see who he really is and how terrible he has handled all of this baggage.

I wonder why he didn’t feel like a failure after his first marriage, given the context of abandoning his first wife for a fantasy. Long winded karma and unhealed patterns repeated.

This threw a new wrench into the whole thing. Though not invested in anyone's relationship, their open book of a life makes it as though Will wanted something but everyone else in his life and those around him were living their own life but wants them to go along with what he wanted. When he did finally allowed them to do whatever, in the back of his mind, Will cannot seem to let go.
