His second wife was from Frisia (roughly modern day Netherlands). His son Ubbe (Ubba) was half Frisian and eventually had control over Frisia. He had a war with his father Ragnar in modern day Zeeland. Eventually they had peace and years later Bjorn Ironside came to Frisia after a defeat in England and died there. We don't know where his body lays but its probably Norway or Sweden.

I don’t believe the show is factual in that sense. Rollo was also not Ragnars brother like the show portrays. Ragnar’s sons also mostly not accurate according to some Viking tales such as Ivar being the first born followed by Bjorn. Basically the Vikings show is not historically accurate regarding the relationships of these Vikings but most of the raids and events did happen.

Ragnor did exist but not as the show Vikings portrayed. Now, Vikingswas a great show and much like the tv show Reign, it was not accurate but was very interesting, powerful and filled with passion! Most of the raids however did happen like the above commenter posted.

He may or may not have actually existed. There are no venomous snakes in England, but this is just one of the sagas of his death. Another said he died of his wounds trying to take Paris. He had no children with Lagertha, Two sons with Thora and four sons with Áslaug.
@colinmackay92

Ragnar Lothbrok definitely existed because his son's definitely existed. Whether or not all the stories about him are true or false makes no difference to that fact. His sons became Kings and their existence is very well documented.

@Colin Mackay Anyone in that time period could, and a lot did claim to be the sons and daughters of Ragnar. Just like Hlaðgerðr (Lagertha) may or may not have existed and / or married Ragnar. These are things that have been studied time and time again by anthropologists and scalar. With most of the sagas missing and being an oral society, the embellishments, just like the ones in the Christian Bible, are that they didn't happen the way we think they did.

@@michaelnewby3898the adder is quite common in that time so they could make a pit with them however impractical it may be. The lothbrok siblings did exist but that doesn't mean Ragnar did some scholars debate that the name comes from their mother(s).

Vikings were similar to Spartans, the only way to truly die as a man was to die while in conflict. It wasn't uncommon for old men to volunteer well past their prime to join in on battles and raids just for the sole purpose of receiving an honorable death, Ragnar saw the writing on the walls with his sons, his time at the top was soon coming to an end and he wanted to go out as a warrior

It was a suicide mission, and he had told the Northumberland king 'oh, how the little piggies will grunt, when they hear how the old boar suffered.' In other words, he knew that if he sailed to england and was captured, theyd kill him.. and it wouldnt be long after before word of his death reached Norway.. his sons would avenge his death at all costs. They raised what would become known as 'The Great Heathen Army' that would go on and sack all of England, giving King Aelle the blood eagle(really gruesome death), then pushing south and forcing King Alfred out of Wessex and into the swamplands.

Theres a lot more to it, and how the invasion of england happened, but it was only a group of them that had gone to wessex, the others returned to either york or northumbria.. while King Alfred's army was considerably smaller, he had the advantage of knowing the land, and met the Viking group in whats known as the battle of edington where he defeated the vikings and made a treaty that allowed the vikings to keep much of the northern and eastern lands

The show Vikings really got me into learning about Ragnar and his sons. And honestly, it improved my understanding of human civilization, and massive human accomplishments. ( ie. The pyramids, public education, maritime technologies, horse technology, roads etc.) Was, I used to look and think in terms of my life time, rather than thinking the men and women that were apart of creating things, were doing what their parents has taught them, who their parents had taught them and so on and so fourth. Modern civilization is so incredibly individualistic, but if you pool together the accomplishments of your siblings, parents, grandparents, cousins and so on, things really begin to add up. Take the construction of modern infrastructure throughout North America, how honestly that was done in quite a short time, and even those who created ancient wonders wouldn’t be able to believe. It’s also wild how much information we do have about Ragnar life, and how much a single family accomplished.

Bro dont forget that 85% of the viking stuff we know is just a theory and NOT prood. Like with the blood eagle its not possible and there no real historically records bout it Somebody came up with stuff and people believe it.
