The warts and all behind the scenes true story of the supermodel phenomenon.
As far back as Ancient Greek and Egyptian societies, in the times when myths and legends were born, artists have created impossibly high ideals for the body beautiful.
And as our culture has changed over time, so too did the physical idea that humans held up as perfection.
Technology, the digital age and social media may have accelerated the pace of change, but it hasn’t changed the substance of the question: what is the beauty ideal ?
The Ancient Greeks revered naked, athletic, well-defined perfection but knew this was unlikely to exist in the real world. So their artists merged what they considered the ideal features from different bodies - often male and female - into the one form to create the perfect specimen.
Right back to Ancient Greek times, artists had been redefining the notion of the body beautiful and the ideal body shape for women and men. The Ancient Greeks invented the notion of the ideal body, using the human form as an object of sensory delight and as an expression of the intelligent mind.
They had a view that perfection didn’t exist in nature. Perfection was what art gave to nature. The idea of a sculpted body was design. It didn’t take inspiration from one model, but from several models; the arm of one, the head of another, and not only male but female bodies. The biggest compliment you could pay a young man of the time was to say he resembled a bronze God, a statue or sculpture.

Saw Christy Turlington in person in 1990 & she was the most spectacular looking woman I have ever seen. From everyone who knows her or has met her it’s said she’s as beautiful inside as her exterior!

I met her in Aspen, forget the name I might have been The Aspen Mountain Club, but it was the lounge bar at the top of Ajax Express. She was goofing around walking with her gloves on her bare feet, she seemed very down to earth and playful. Gregory Peck was also there next to me. That's Aspen.

THANK YOU FOR MENTIONING GIA….. THE O. G ICON of beauty and fashion long before “ SUPER MODEL” was a term. Gia started at 17, is often left out unless a documentary solely about her. She was not 90’s pop culture “ super model” era. She was top of her game late 70’s early 80’s only 5 year career. Along side the great Christie Brinkley THE FIRST SUPER MODEL. Unfortunately her model fashion success seems to pale to her chaotic heroin drug addiction. Who wants to give attention to drug addiction & AIDS 🙄🙄. Gia’s story should get ALOT of attention she succumb to what the model industry has done to many we never hear of, the women and men who couldn’t keep up, drug use, partying, clubs, abuse, no help, while watching their decline already looking for the …NEXT…we do not hear of the ones who get swallowed by it enough. We are starting to hear about the SA’s and all the other sick behaviour hidden behind the 90’s glamour …. Karen Moulder shared in a televised interview and was deemed “ crazy, unhinged” and licked away in psych ward . No one stepped forward to back her TRUE claims. The world WASN’T READY TO LISTEN YET. All the 90’s SUPER MODELS were spectacular and most good girls from balanced homes went on to continued success and good lives , those are the models people want to hear about … the dream , not the nightmare…. CLAUDIA COMES TO MIND FOR CONTINUED SUCCESS AFTER RUNWAY , ONE OF MY FAVES …. Yasmeen disappearing on her own terms , Shaloms Alexander McQueen 1999 spray paint show UNREPEATABLE symbolic of leaving the 90’s heading into 2000’s. This was a good documentary surprised never came across before.
