Latin America and the Phillipines had a completely opposite history with Christmas, it's not just one day; its a whole season of festivities. In Mexico it begins since Advent with "Las Posadas" and then comes Nochebuena or "Good Night" (Christmas Eve), then a less formal Thanksgiving like party on Christmas Day. Then more revelry in New Years (in Mexico they follow the Spanish custom of eating 13 grapes, each for each month of the year plus one, at midnight) and also cider is preferred in many homes to Champagne. Then comes the "Rosca de Reyes" or fruit glazed round cake and then the children get their presents. And last on Candlemass (La Candelaria) you feast on Tamales of all flavors, colors and sizes and then finally its over.

In Austria we Banned any Christmas Items before November. Only Exceptions are things that can be asociated with Saint Nicholas. They put it in place, because in 2017, they went bonkers with christmas starting in September. One radio DJ of a major radio station even played "Last christmas" for 38 hour straight to prove this is madness. He locked himself into the studio and baricaded it. He kept his job and the Goverment passed a law that banned the selling and marketing of christmas goods outside of November and December.

Not-so-fun fact: The Puritans (and some other Dissenters, but IIRC not all) were opposed to a lot of other stuff that qualified as 'fun' at the time, even things that did a lot less damage than Medieval English Christmases. For example, the desire to ban bear-baiting, not because it was violent, nor the harm it did to animals, but because the spectators enjoyed it, even when they weren't gambling.

Two major things that be pointed out 1)- The Pilgrims were NOT Puritans. The Plymouth colony was eventually subsumed by the Massachusetts Bay colony, yes, but the Pilgrims were a separate Dissenter denomination and specifically fled to the Netherlands to avoid Puritan purges of other Dissenter groups during Cromwell's regime. Thats a pretty important error in the video that should be corrected, 2)- Catholics had once repressed Puritans yes, but this was far from a one way street. In fact the coalition that strove to overthrow Cromwell specifically included Catholics, Anglicans, and Dissenters of all stripes due to the Puritans attacking all other forms of expressing Christianity, and later political cross-denomination political alliances such as the Jacobites find in their origins in said alliance. In addition, the Puritans were explicitly genocidal of ethnic minorities for even tangential associations with other denominations & faiths. Their pogroms against Jews are the most well-known example, but their racial & ethnic genocides of Irish and Romani people (in spite of conversions to Protestantism) were very much under the pretext of their associations with Catholicism and non-Puritan Christian practice, rather than just racism as is commonly misunderstood (although that certainly played a factor as well).

"They don't celebrate Easter in the bible." Don't most non-English languages call it passover which is like... celebrated in the NT. Granted not in its modern form and far closer to its original Jewish tradition (because at that point it basically was). Then again Puritans are like... insane.
@timothystamm3200 Жыл бұрын
@cg4259 well here I am to correct you depending on the Gospel, Jesus either died the first day of Passover or the day before on the day of preparation. So Easter and Passover cross over a little bit except they don't because they're all celebrated based on when the Hebrew Calendar Month of Nisan starts. That is determined by when the full moon is sighted after the vernal equinox. The Julian, Gregorian, and Hebrew Calendars all have different ways of determining that. So, it rarely lines up that Eastern Orthodox, nor the Western Churches Easters exactly line up, nor that Passover occurs at the same time because they each use one of those calendars. Eastern Rite uses Julian, Western Rite and Protestants use Gregorian, and Jewish holidays follow the Hebrew Calendar.

@@k1productions87I mean, Christmas is my favorite time of year and I still think it’s absolute upper and lower bounds should be Advent plus the 12 days of Christmas. In other words, it shouldn’t start until December. Even with the 12 days, it’s my favorite Holiday, but that doesn’t mean I want to devalue other Holidays. You can certainly make room for New Year’s and respect Thanksgiving as its own thing. I think part of it is that there’s not as much Christmas cheer anymore. You don’t see too many people invoking good will towards all men during the Holidays. So people try to celebrate it longer. We’ve kinda lost the reason for the season, and the people arguing that Christmas should stay in its lane certainly aren’t usually the people who argue for more Christmas cheer during the appropriate times. So why would people who love Christmas listen? When you argue it should be limited, and then don’t give a crap during the right time, it can seem less like you’re trying to keep the traditional holiday seasons in check, and more like you just hate Christmas.
