Be careful if you have ants along with the aphids. The ants have a symbiotic relationship with the aphids. They protect the aphids from their natural predators and the aphids give the ants all the honeydew they can eat. Ants will kill the ladybugs the first night to protect the aphids. If you have ants too, you need to address the ant issue before you can address the aphids.

Yes! I had ants and aphids in my garden box. First, I treated the ants with borax and sugar...works every time! But, I had to remove most of my plantings. There were millions of aphids and since my box sits on a rooftop with 30 other garden boxes, was concerned that the aphids would spread to my neighbor's boxes. So after removing my plants, I treated the soil with a vinegar/soap solution until I saw no more aphids. Now, in my do over planting, I am trying to find aphid resistant plants to put in.

Mother nature will send earth to take care of the problem, she's amazing. To keep the lady bugs around, build them a shelter they can go to at night. In elementary they taught us how to make lady bug shelters out of emty tissue paper rolls SUPER EASY, hang them near the area you want to keep them around. The more you care and upkeep their shelter the more will come and eventually they'll call it their home and start to breed, this will be the forever home for some, with more coming back the next year. I just build a couple of shelters, but I used old dried up hollow tree trunks, they look more natural and beautifully blend in with the garden... plus it had more crevices for them to safely lay their eggs. Don't forget to smear honey in the shelter... once they've eaten all the aphids they'll leave looking for more food, but if you provide them the food and water they'll stick around. This might also attract honey bees, a plus for a veggie garden if you ask me... don't worry they both get along well.

Last year, I bought a veritable army of aphid eating ladybugs and lacewings for reducing a much more minor infestation. Like a real army, they left their barracks in search of enemy aphids, presumably eating them right up. I was tickled pink. The only problem was it was an army with NO General to bark orders, issue commands and direct troops. And so without a General, they all took flight (rather immediately) for the great beyond in search of aphids, leaving my small aphid infested garden plants without protection. I hope all my neighbors are now happy with their aphid-less gardens.

yellow sticky gnats catch fungus gnats not aphids. Ladybugs are cool, if you can get them to stay. Glad it worked for you though. You can also mix 1 tsp high quality neem oil (like dr adorable) with 1tsp of dr bronners peppermint castle soap with 1 quart water in a spray bottle. The soap is an emulsifier and allows the oil to mix with the water, plus the peppermint is also highly deterrent. The neem oil will make the aphiids feel "full" and stop eating, starve and die. Additionally the jet from your sprayer will remove them form the plant and the neem oil/peppermint spray will continue to deter. I also use this spray for wasps, my tomatoes, my lettuces and pretty much everything on an as needed basis. It does leave residue, so you want to wash what you eat well, but it is very safe and organic (granted you get organic lol).

If you spray the pepper plant with just a water sprinkler for 2-3 days in a row you interrupt their life cycle and your problem. The aphids can not crawl back on the plant once they are rinsed off. Amazing! Here in Tucson we don't get aphids on our bell peppers (unfortunately our squirrels come into my yard and eat the LEAVES), but we get aphids on our MILKWEED PLANT, this is the plant that Monarch butterflies lay their eggs on. Weird thing is those aphids don't spread to any of our other plants just stay on the milkweed plant. But I think I'll get some lady bugs too! Maybe they will help with other bug pests.

The nature did it for me. I had two bell pepper plants overwintered indoor. Both were quickly overrun by aphids once they were indoor. One died. One was barely alive by the time it was warm enough outside (Michigan here). Just a week after I moved the barely alive bell pepper outside, aphids were all gone. It was the wind, rain, and cold nights did the trick. I believe your cover actually helped aphids by protecting them from the nature. Just like what happened to my peppers after I moved them indoor. My pepper plants outdoor never had such problem.

Releasing ladybugs has multiple issues: 1.) most times they're invasive Asian ladybugs. 2.) If they're not asian ladybugs, many times they are lady bugs not native to your ecoregion. 3.) larvae of ladybugs eat much more than the adults and many times the adults will eat a little and then fly away. Best I've seen is create a habitat where ladybugs can thrive naturally or give the aphids an alternative they like better than peppers. Dish soap and water works and has never hurt my plants.

Ladybugs are effective, but they can fly away. Ants are far more effective at aphid removal. I started planting giant sunflowers around my gardens, and found that the ants will farm aphids exclusively on the sunflower plants. All my other food-bearing plants were suddenly free from both aphid AND ant damage. When the sunflower leaf gets too damaged I just remove it. Sunflowers are really hardy and can take a lot of damage. I still get huge seed production.

One more trick for you. Wash/knock the aphids off the plants. Put a ring of high quality (read:sticky) duct tape around the base of each plant, sticky side out and touching the ground all around its base. As the aphids try to climb back up they get stuck on the tape. Works really well then every time you’re back near the plants all you need to do is give them a good shake and the aphid population will never get going to the point it’ll worry you.

It’s not that washing them off didn’t work. It’s the eggs in the soil that hatch out an they come back. Lady bugs are great. The ladybug babies/larva are the key to what you’re trying to get. They eat the most amount of aphids. But to keep from getting them again. You need to be feeding your soil good natural foods. The microbes in the soil will then feed the plants. When the plant gets sick or distressed (even though it looks fine it can have issues) the plants put off a type of pheromone that draws the aphids. If the plant is super healthy it actually repels harmful pests. Look into the brix content of your plants.

Your pepper was stressed out and couldn’t do photosynthesis properly. That’s the reason the aphids were latching on the plant. My first guess is your soil had too much nitrogen. Second guess is the pH of your soil wasn’t suitable for pepper. Also I would prune off all the branches at the bottom, so the plants have better airflow. Lastly, soapy water works on killing aphids. Spray it thoroughly on the plant for three consecutive days. Small aphid infestation will die off completely.
