Quite many people asking which year(s) the footage was taken. The answer is, Rick's first trip to Hong Kong took time in the beginning of 1981, the second one in the beginning of 1993, and the trip to Hong Kong and Guilin was around 1993 to 1994. In case someone is interested why: 2:28: The copyright shows year 1994. Rick mentions several times that his second trip to Hong Kong was 12 years after the first one. At 36:26, he says that both his trips took time during Lunar New Year, and both times it was Year of the Rooster. As of 1994, the last New Year of the Rooster was in 1993, and the last one before that was in 1981. And as a mathematician at heart, I must complete my proof by showing that the trips could not have been done earlier (say in 1969 and 1981). Well, for example, at 36:21 (the second trip) we can see Central Plaza (completed in 1992). Q.E.D. And what appears to be a small inconsistency, at 7:29 while still talking about the 1981 trip, Rick shows a view from Victoria Hill that features both Bank of China tower (completed in 1990) and Central Plaza.

OMG! What a pearl of a documentary. I just loved the style. It feels like it is as spontaneous and unpretentious as an amateur personal trip but so professional at the same time. Just felt as if the movies that my parents shot more than 30 years ago were edited by a professional :) good job Rick! Many many thanks!

I My first time in Hong Kong was 26 years ago , every time we go travelling to Asia for two months , whenever possible we stop over in Hong Kong. We have also travelled around China for two months and spent time in exactly the same places as you . Our last trip to Hong Kong was in September this year . I was very saddened to see the down hill slide of Hong Kong. Not good at all . We also went to Tia O for the first time and found it a great education . Whenever possible I will stopover in Hong Kong before any other location . It's a unique city , nothing like it . Your video is number 1 . Thanks again

This video really calms my heart and gives me something to think about - how relaxed and honest mid 1900's culture was like. The optimism is very refreshing. If you're rich and unhappy, you're not wealthy. If you're poor and happy, you're wealthy. Those are words I will try to live by. I hope my upcoming trip to Hong Kong helps me search my soul - to get away from this fast paced/negative world and help me find what I've been looking for all my life.
@andyle17204 жыл бұрын
Very wise words indeed. That's how I try to live too my friend. Money and material wealth is not important to me, only love, happiness and family is important to me in no particular order 😉 I'd rather be poor but happy than rich but unhappy. Like they say more money more problems and I don't like problems 😁

excellent documentary. I left communist China mid 1958, live in Hong Kong til autumn of 1960. Your film reminded me of horror living condition in the late 50's in Hong Kong - a place and time I will never forget. I am an America citizen now, America is such a great country most people can not fathom the freedom and opportunities. I am sadden so many Americans do not appreciate what they have, I am more sadden, many refuges came to this great country; instead of appreciating it, - they become gangsters.

+Eric Chan No the travelogue spokesman just speaks like an American from the 1950's. James Clavell wrote Taipan in 1966. So the voice over had to have been done after 1966 and the novel only became well known in the US in the 1970's after his novel Shogun became a TV Series in the mid or late 1970's. Some of the video footage may be clipped from 1960's or earlier travel films.

Very interesting and informative, enjoyed it a lot. I find Asia and its culture mysterious. Spent a year + in Korea in early 60's but was on the DMZ while in the US Army. All we saw was grinding poverty. But is Soul, the capitol it was better but not like what you show in this video. I'd love to see that in person. Not so much the crowds of Hong Kong but the smaller towns and villages and of course the water and all the strange and beautiful boats. I have a thing about "work boats". I would love to stay on one of those for a few days. THANKS

The description is so wrong. Hong Kong island was CEDED instead of BORROWED by Britain in 1842, NOT 1898. The 99-year lease is only applicable to News Territories in 1898, but NOT KOWLOON and Hong Kong Island. p.s: I am from Hong Kong

Bill T's saying that the film must be 30 years old is correct. The Bank of China Tower was opened in 1976. MTR HK in the film hints that the film was taken after Sept 1979 since MTR began operation on 30 September 1979. (Source: Wikipedia)
