The reality of betting, being banned or restricted by a bookmaker? Here is a simple solution!

Punters being restricted by a bookmaker, or even worse banned. Has been the downfall of many a profitable sports betting strategy.
No sooner do you find a winning strategy than you find you can't get your bet on anywhere for any amount.
I too was banned from placing bets with bookmakers and thew in the towel many years ago, roughly 30 years ago to be more precise.
So I gave up and stayed away from betting markets until the birth of betting exchanges, like Betfair.
But even then I returned to do some arbitrage between bookmakers and betting exchanges. But I got caught out again by a bookmaker who refused to pay out.
However, there is a happy ending and it should be something that you throw any anybody that complains about being restriced, banned or palped by a sportsbook or bookmaker.

the government need to step in really. the bookies literally bankrupt people who are addicted to gambling etc but if the insanely low amount of people who make money at gambling make 3 grand they pull the plug, its absolutely dispicable.

This is why exchanges are better, they are funding on commission on winning bets, but losers pay no commission. The market is so efficient that losers will more or less break even at random, if they have a sensible staking plan, and can tip it to break even with a little knowledge.

well the government are the only 1's that can stop them i stop gambling from the first lockdown because there was no sports and I finally quit after 6 years even with sports starting again but I remember asking a manager at BET 365 about restricted accounts and he said the main reason they do it is because there running a business and the business would not work with winners

Peter, I think I have the answer. So, go down to your local high street and look for a shop called 'Lovely Ladies' or something like that. Enter shop and buy a dress. I would suggest something floral and flowing. Next step go to a shop called 'Ladyshoooos' or something similar. Buy a pair of high heel shoes and a handbag. Make sure that they don't match the dress. Attire yourself in your freshly purchased items and make your way to the bookmaker. When they refuse your bet (if they dare to) scream 'Trans-phobia, trans-phobia'. Bet taken. Problem solved. This works even better if you grow a beard and under no circumstances ever wear a wig. Wearing socks with the high heels prevents blisters and adds a certain ambience to the scenario. let's be fair what the bookmakers are doing is illegal.If they don't contact the person and let them know they are going to use their data it is illegal. Any one knows that high street bookmakers ,all the punters know each other.Any restriction would see a mass walk out of that shop and people move to another shop. The Gambling Commision must know this is going on and therefore it is time consumers took action and demanded the gambling commision be closed down . If you are 100% of the time looking the other way then your are complicit. Enough is enough close the Uk Gambling Commision down.Not fit for purpose as many MP's agree.

I've been restricted by several bookies, presumably because I've used them for matched betting. However, I would have thought it was in their interests to milk me for as long as possible. I always do my best to lose at the bookie and win my lay bet at the exchange, as this is much more convenient. Everyone wins. The bookie gets my money and the exchange gets their commission!

Hi Peter, I used to work for Betfair for a while, and mostly during that period they were focused on building up the sportsbook and casino customer base because that's where the easy money was (good for the shareholders - perhaps less good for the industry). I could tell you about many conversations about why the Exchange is not popular, despite how many of us who love Exchange betting feel like it should have taken over the industry. During that time I was banned from most bookmaker sites and moved to making money through the Exchange. I like to build 'hands-off' API bots as they are (in theory) more scalable, but am starting to look into more hands-on trading as well. Would you say that a certain amount of hands-on is required to make a living from Exchanges (a-side from when testing out new strategies)?

If someone wanted to lay the field in a Horse Race at say 2.02 for £20 is there a quick way to prepare the bets for In-Running or even do them ( time permitting! ) in running and is there a bot/device where as soon as you lay the first one at that price for your liability maximum then all the other horse's bets at those odds are cancelled so you just lay one horse. I know it's tempting to lay 2 horses because @ 2.02 for identical stakes you lose pennies but, invariably, in that scenario it is the second lay that wins, my friend ...

Just spotted this comment. Yes, I've been party to some discussions. In commerical organisations there is always internal presure to chase margin. So the exchange is probably seen as a way to lose more slowly, as opposed to higher margin products. That would be the prevailing view from those from traditional betting. I use a mixture of automation and manual trading as there is a place in the market for both.

Having worked for an high street bookmaker previously, i would often tell people about exchanges (as my disgust for the company grew). The biggest problem convincing them to gamble with an exchange was either, they are not computer savvy, or don't like using their bank card/details online. So many people missing out!

What is shocking is that most punters are poorly informed about exchanges or suspicious of them. When exchanges first came out there was some awareness. However over time exchanges have sat quietly in the background and there is a new generation of young punters who don't really know about them.

My dilemma is I had a rough time with a lot of online bookies, so I barred myself for 5 years using GameStop, but after 2 of those years I developed a winning horse system, so I can only use it at Street bookies, and it won't be long before I get banned, I know what you'll suggest, so I will mention it, Betfair, but even if it's not covered by GameStop, they blocked my account after I made a legitimate bet whilst on holiday in the Philippines, I'll probably end up selling my system, which I don't really want to do.

Try multi account instead of selling your system if you don't want to do that. I know it may be complicated to do, but if someone you really trust will let you use their details for a share of the price. A lot of people do it. Though you need to fully inform yourself on how to properly go on about doing that. I'm happy for you that you developed a succesfull system. I'm just barely getting my feet wet at 35. For a beginner what do people recommend as the easiest/safest strategy? I'm looking to build up my bank so from my research I was thinking lay the draw (at half time) & lay the server in tennis. Do people agree these are the best place to start out?

There isn't really a best place to start out in my opinion. Find a sport or trading style you are comfortable with and start experimenting. You may want to check out the forum where people will give you an honest opinion of where you should start. Markets that open and close frequently will allow you to get used to the trading process, so horse racing is useful for that. But a fairly counter intuitive trading market as it's opinion based. In-play stuff has a strong arrow of time, so you will get a good strike rate that will give you confidence, but ultimately may not be profitable.

The risk of a bookmaker welching on a bet in matched betting has its corollary in financial markets. Its called 'credit equivalent risk'. In other words, the risk that you buy (or sell) a financial instrument and the market goes up (or down) and you are therefore dependent on your counterparty paying out - in effect you face a credit risk as soon as your bet on the market comes good. What is worse, it happens more often and is greater the better you are at your job as a trader. I don't do matched betting now (been banned) but when I was doing it I always used my financial market experience to limit my credit equivalent risk. Never ever laying odds on an exchange where the loss could be more than £1,000 if the matching bookmaker didn't pay out for example. I figured a bookmaker would not welch on a deal for £1,000 but if they did the maximum loss was limited and the probability was low.

Hardly anybody pays it though. I paid higher rate premium charge every week last year, but PC has become a marketing message now for a lot of people. If they pretend they are affected, then it looks good on them. But only a tiny number of consistent winners will pay.

Previous to paying it, I would happily bet on the F1 or 20/20 cricket for a bit of fun. If my experience is multiplied out by other premium charge payers it accounts for the dramatic loss in liquidity outside of the main Horse/Football/Golf and Cricket markets.

@@JonathanFeast The proof is in the pudding in what you are saying. You cannot possibly make money paying those kinds of commisions/tax rates on any kind of market it's totally impossible. The only way you can though is if you are bent. Referring to horse racing, the Goverment should demand Betfair show them the accounts of those who consistently win and are quite happy to pay that high premium. You will see straight away who is cheating, this idea of trainers, jockeys, billionaire owners not betting is total nonsense. It's human nature, if free money is available then people will take it. Paddy Power hit the Golden Goose when they purchased Betfair, it gave them a free licence to insider trade on virtually every horse race out there. I have been gambling over 40yrs now, I No longer look at form as it's meaningless, I now look at things in a total cynical way, I don't back more winners, but I do back less losers for sure.

You've got a few things wrong there Gary. The premium charge is levied on net profits, not bets or any specific result. It's just if you win. If you hurdle the lifetime limit, commision paid and markets active you will qualify. But most traditional punters or outright backers or layers don't pay it.

That's my point, it will be a select few that win very highly and do not mind paying a MASSIVE rate of commission. I agree that casinos and bookmakers are not public services to owe you something but private entertainment companies. However the way they conduct their entertainment is corrupt and unfair. Problem is that all so called independent regulating bodies are in their pockets. Its all the same as banks and politics. Biggest cartels, with unfair advantage, exploiting uneducated, and vulnerable people. Keep all the compulsive gamblers milk them as much as possible, pay fine to gambling commission that is a fraction of your profit.

I was always search for the best prices and now and again the sportsbook would say it was an error, even if it wasn't. I made most of my money on arbitrage in the early days of betting exchanges as it was easy to find mismatches in prices on the exchange compared to bookmakers. But I only did this for maybe 18 months. I got palped on a 125-1 shot and that isn't great for for your liability when you just put it on an exchange. But I figured out that you could actually put both bets on an exchange and that was more scalable and the rest, as they say, is history.

Actually one area in which bookmakers are superior to the exchanges is in long term markets . Many long term markets on the exchanges don’t have much liquidity but bookies take quite big bets on those markets.

I don’t want to say too much under my own name and this is going to sound incredibly conceited or stupid but one of the biggest areas of misunderstanding in sports betting is in long term markets. And you can definitely make money even if the odds aren’t that great. Long term sports markets are so easy to trade that it’s incredible to me that so few do it . The trick is to bet them in multiples throughout the season. Yes multiples 😳 I started off many years ago betting each way accumulators because the bookies used to routinely offer value in the place part of outright markets. Joseph Buchdahl says that’s bollocks . He’s totally wrong . But by 2010 nearly all the value was gone and bookies went win only far earlier in the season. But my experience betting each way got me wondering if somehow even betting win only could still be profitable. The very first year I lost . No fewer than 6 teams collapsed in the second half of the season. Never experienced thst man and boy and it was just one of those things . Never happened since . And in any case I had bet too much too early which compounded this problem which is a big error . But if as I expect I make a profit this season I will have lost twice in the last nine years . And in one of those years Brentford missed a last minute penalty or else I’d have made £110,000 profit instead of an £18,000 loss . They then lost the play off final which would have yielded the same result. I don’t mind if no one believes me as I’m used to it.😀

Yeah, 'special events' often have the biggest overounds on bookmakers, but also the biggest value if you know about the event. A good example is Eurovision (though this has also been huge on the exchange for a while). I have not come across a bookmaker that let's me do multiples on these selections - but I think this only works if the event outcomes are related, or both bets are good value

the rules are wrong, and others use rules in wrong way. if a restaurant dont want you there because they steal your wallet or scam you... that is a wrong thing. but the rules stick with restaurant ( i meant here gambling site ) in short, rules made for the companies not for people.

Betting exchanges can't refuse to pay out, so I've always felt that was a better solution.
