3 yrs ago I was sitting on my couch watching your videos. I was a successful international airline Captain flying a 767 around the world...and I was miserable. Motivated by story, I walked away from a quarter million $/yr job and retired early in Thailand. I got my Bareboat Captain's license and sailed in Thailand. 2 yrs later, I missed TX and moved back, paid cash for a house, car & boat and now I'm going back to flying for a yr or 2 to get savings back up. But, you were right! Even though it was a financial loser moving me & my dogs back & forth, I don't regret it a bit. I met a nice girl and for the rest of my years, I can say I did that! We only get so many trips around the sun, LIVE LARGE!

As noted by the guys that helped you, rebuilding a hurricane damaged boat is huge work, and very very few people can execute, you compound that with the design flaws of the Lagoon bulkheads, close to impossible. Not because the work is so difficult, but its so demanding, there is no room for patchwork, the boats will fall apart if you don’t do proper repair work. Ask the Leopard 46 guy that repaired a grounding and significant hull/ keel damage, it fell off on this first passage in the middle of the night and sank in minutes. My 2 cents worth, just does not pay to repair these boats, tons on money for the fix and the boat is never easy to sell. Why buy a damaged boat when there are good boats on offer.

I wasn't in at the beginning, but I have watched every single episode from the first to the latest once I found you a couple of years ago. So, you fessed up and told us what you spent on her and anyone who has ever fixed up an old car could see just how much labour went into the re-build, but here's the question...how many other silly eejits bought a hurricane damaged catamaran, and managed to get it not only sea-worthy, but worthy of any inspection? Apart from your one-time next door neighbour David Shih? A splendid effort by you and Ben and Jamie, who single(?) handedly brought Parlay back from the dead. Well done and a wonderful example of grit and determination.

Thanks Colin for taking me back to Nanny Cay, we had booked a 5 boat flotilla that was set to sail in July 2020. Well first it was Irma and the marina recovering to get boats and the marina fixed. Then, along came COVID and the closure of the BVI’s to tourism. So we had paid ahead, and the charter company kept sweetening the deal for us to hang in there and not seek a refund. In the end that bought us 10 days of charter vs 7 and $500 per boat for fuel expense. Finally we set sail on June of 2022. 5 Lagoon 450’s from Navigare Charter. Initially when originally booked we were told they would all be new 2018 and 2019 Lagoons. But on arrival and in hindsight it was easy to spot that they had been damaged and had bulkhead issues. The sliding door would not close properly and back windows wouldn’t open due to alignment issues. Our boat was one of the lucky ones in the group. Some had electronics, generator and electrical issues. We also found out on arrival that one of our crew who had represented himself as having a Captains license did not have one, it had been revoked and he had cruised power boats, never a sailing vessel. So me and my wife with our midwestern 25 ft sailing skills on inland lakes became the captain and first mate of a fully inexperienced crew. But it worked, we sailed 8 BVI islands including the passage to Anegada. Brought the boat back in one piece and got credentials so if we ever charter again, we are certified. And yes , we will do it again, because as soon as I returned to the Midwest I started watching Sailing Parley. And while I have no intention of fixing a hurricane damaged catamaran, I will again charter and sail, but next time with a hand selected crew.

i remember of Parlay when i was in the market for the same operation: at that time i was total newbie, never sailed before and living in Eu was complicating even more what already was a complicated task. Long story short i bought the used catamaran i could afford but in good shape and i don't regret: during this time i sailed, made experience and most importantly understood really what a salvage boat can become in terms of money burning; and another thing i undestood is that a hurricane damaged vessel is a bet that require a lot of money, but very often you don't know how much. That said, it's an adventure that i would like to experience so.....maybe in future 😝
