An exploration of Celtic otherworlds in this story from the Fennian Cycle of Irish Mythology.
"The birth of Oshín and the Deer Woman of the Sídhe"
Where Fionn Mac Cumhaill, leader of the legendary warrior poets of Eire and Alba, finds the love of a faery woman from the other side, only to lose it again.
But gains a son.

There is an old story that 2 pages were missing from a story in (if I remember properly) the red book of Leinster. Scholars tried to recreate the missing pages. Much later the shanachies were heard telling the story. Then they found the missing pages bound into another ancient text. They matched the story of the shanachies word for word. Oral tradition is fascinating

Well that is fascinating, thank you for that. Can’t say my recall is quite at that level. 😅 Got to be grateful to the Myth carriers of old. 🙏

I do not know why Irish mythology is not more popular. I love the old stories, the Tuatha de Dannan, the story of Deirdre, the Tain. There are very good translations available now. You don’t have to read Old Irish or Latin. I love Kinsella’s translation of the Tain.

I’ve been watching quite a few of your videos and have subscribed and liked. I’m not usually a person who leaves a comment, but had to comment on this one, as really hit me…I can’t say why anymore than the others I’ve throughly enjoyed…but felt deep emotion coming up listening to this. Thank you

Really appreciate the comment, thanks for leaving it. Yeah, I agree there’s something in this story that just gets me too, and I also can’t pinpoint what it is. Some old magic resonating …

Ah, thank you so much Iain. Really appreciate that. As I (obviously) don’t speak the language, Gaeilge pronunciation is a bit of a barrier for me in telling some of these stories, but I’m getting better - thanks to good folks like yourself. I’m visiting your country in a few weeks, and hope to learn a bit more. Driving down the west coast. Your boy has a great name by the way 🦌 😉 🙏

Thanks for the great story! I have a question: Did Ośin cross over into the real world which allowed Finn to find him or did Finn cross over into the other world when Finn went through the thicket?
@TheStoryCrow
@TheStoryCrow 6 ай бұрын
Really good question I actually don’t know and I reckon every storyteller will tell it different. I think it’s both. Like the various other worlds overlap in places, like ven diagrams, or wavelengths matching in frequency. So Finn and Osin thought they were each in their own world. You’ve got me thinking now. Great question 😅🤔

@@TheStoryCrow I appreciate the honest answer. The ven diagram/overlap concept makes sense. It's an interesting story either way. Thanks again for the great content. I look forward to checking out more of your videos!

Maybe you found a Siddhi and became a Siddha, one way to explain that memory of yours, do you build memory castles?

I remember reading about that in a deer en brown book and did try it out once. Don’t really need it for folklore though, I have a very visual mind and narratives tend to just unfold naturally. Guess it’s in the blood. My name in Gaelic means storyteller 😂

@@TheStoryCrow me too. I lived in Dublin from 1972 to 1978, studying ancient and medieval Irish history at UCD. It was an incredible time for Irish music, the Chieftains, Planxty, Clannad, the Bothy Band, DeDannan (with Dolores Keene, Horslips, Alan Stivell. We used to go to concerts Friday and Saturday nights, then sit around O’Donaghue’s most of Sunday listening to whoever was playing. Despite the troubles, it was a great time to live n Ireland.
