You would just die easier to other mechs shooting at you from the front, which is most mechs. Putting back armour on to protect against a just in case that makes you worse in every other scenario isn't a great idea. And more back armour wouldn't save you anyway, you would just get shot for a second time in the back. Learning to have better situational awareness will be far more useful, and will help you in other scenarios as well, just a good skill to have in general. Basically what snek said with more words.

Back armor's nice, it saves you from insta-dying to a backstabber, and if you're losing the fight, just literally turn tail and run, save the face armor for a better engagement.

I don't play MechWarrior Online, but I've played the older MechWarrior games. Is there no bounce back heat when damaging and especially killing adjacent mechs? Do mechs not turn into mini nukes anymore when they die?

in the newer MechWarrior's there are reactor explosion's. however they don't really do mech. MechWarrior online has no reactor explosions
