Outdoors, My preference is 0 lights - The Sun + 1 reflector if possible. I like working with scrims but the challenge of multiple panels is they become sails in the slightest of winds. If I need to add a light, I also like using a 6’x6’ translucent panel. But these additional panels and lights requires additional assistants to hold them down and “guard” them from falling. Indoors, whatever it takes - multiple lights, panels, reflectors plus ambient light(s).

I generally use one light, but have used 3-4 on occasion. That is mostly when I’m trying for a dramatic hero pose and lighting for sports. There are a lot of budget lighting systems out there now that are performing at a high level.

I used either the Good AD400Pro or the FlashPoint Xplora 600 TTL. My Camera is the Canon EOS R and the Panasonic Lumix DC-S1

I always use only one main Flash with diffuser .... at most one second smaller as fill, if necessary.

One Profoto B10, supplemented by a Profoto A1. Or I just use the A1 off camera. I carry a couple of light softboxes (for the B10) and a trifold umbrella (for the A1).

I’m on the same boat. If I’m doing studio work then bring on all the lights. If I’m on location or walking around then it’s one light...I don’t like to walk around with a cart. Just my backpack and soft box on a stand.

Nevermind I’m realizing it’s the 24-105 which seems to be the trade secret of fashion photography as F4 is highest image quality with getting all the focal distances. Just no depth of field

Not a choice... it's just convenient... I use it as a beauty dish on portraits or when I want a hard light on my subject... but When I can I use a bigger modifier.
