democracynow.org - Fifty years ago this month, rebellions broke out in the cities of Newark and Detroit. It all began in Newark on July 12, 1967, when two white police officers detained and beat an African-American cabdriver. Shortly after, on July 23, police officers raided an after-hours club in an African-American neighborhood of Detroit, sparking another mass rebellion. Forty-three people died in Detroit, and 26 were killed in Newark, while 7,000 people were arrested. The rebellions reshaped both Newark and Detroit and marked the beginning of an era of African-American political empowerment. We speak with Larry Hamm, chairman of the People’s Organization for Progress, and Scott Kurashige, author of the new book, "The Fifty-Year Rebellion: How the U.S. Political Crisis Began in Detroit."

Anyone a teenager at the time remembers these events. The communities in rebellion was beyond what the police could handle, soldiers, jeeps, national guard, Marshall law, military occupation, check points, house arrests, all that was wrong with America in the 1940 -and 1950's came to a head in the 1960's, made the commission react to the injustices of police brutality.

Except, in the end, they did not. The majority of racist/psychotic police officers who beat, raped and killed countless people got away with it scott-free and are currently living a life of absolute luxury. And this is still standard protocol to this day. Nothing has changed.

"It is the violent side of the civil rights movement that is never told. Between 1960 and 1971 there were 1000 urban uprisings against police brutality." - Larry Hamm of Newark

Nope they don't want the next generation to see how things were in the past and create the next Malcolm,MartinL. King moreso those reactions to mistreatment can follow you. I personally lived in the projects right across the street from the 4th precinct on 17th Ave. In Newark. Imagine how much we saw Right Across the Street

The soldiers here have fixed Bayonets on their weapons. That is crazy. I am sure they don't intend on doing hand to hand combat.
