I didn't even have to do the "Evinrude Dance", but I sure did get wet feet. Still need to figure out the kill switch. I thought the throttle plate under the flywheel activated the kill switch. But maybe that's not a kill switch. The wire on the pressure safety switch seams to kill only one cylinder if you ground it out.

Ed, I thought you did a great job with this rebuild. My Son and I were working on a similar model 40 hp Johnson. It had one lower cylinder (bottom) like yours but seem to come back with 105 psi in both after running awhile. I was wondering if you were able to get it out on the lake? If so do you have video of the boat at full speed. I would be interested in knowing what the compression values were after break in too. Thanks again for the entertaining and education videos. Keep them coming.

Don’t worry about the oil in the barrel or the smoke. Even when tuned perfect you get that nasty oil in the barrel. These motors are gas hogs and polluters, but I love them! BTW 2 strokes don’t need lead in the fuel so don’t waste money on an additive. They also run fine on 87 octane. I don’t like ethanol in the gas but run it all summer because it’s cheaper and run the non ethanol in the fall so it’s winterized with no ethanol.
@rustyedmoore
@rustyedmoore 6 жыл бұрын
Doug Lambert good to know. What do you mix your fuel at. Some say 50:1 on a full bearing motor, but that sounds lean to me.
@2wheeledairhead712
@2wheeledairhead712 6 жыл бұрын
50:1 is all you need and it will still smoke and leave oil in a barrel. These motors don’t clear out in neutral in a barrel. When put in gear on the lake and run wide open it will clear out in a hurry and not smoke near as bad.
@2wheeledairhead712
@2wheeledairhead712 6 жыл бұрын
Your kill switch should simply be 2 black wires. Both wires are from both sets of points. To run the circuit would be open. To kill both wires would connect to compete the circuit and the points ground each other out. Very simple for someone of your knowledge and know how👍

Your motor is Post 63, it has a Hot Air Autochoke. The 1964 is a bit of an oddball as the choke solenoid is designed as a choke Pull Off, not the usual Choke on, That difference was changed to the usual mode of operation in 65.

I have been also, trying to figure out a possible issue with the help of "this old outboard". I cannot get my throttle control to go to and stay at the start position.The shift lever that goes up and hits the stop assy up under flywheel stops it short .I thought it was hitting in the wrong spot due to it being bent.According to a guru on Marine engine he looked at a picture I posted and said it was correct. This old outboard has a forty he looked at and says it hits the stop at a different stop location.I can see yours barely when the camera comes around that side.Not sure though if your motor has a different stop assy attatched to the points plate which rotates the stop?I will have to check.

Ok-I will double check screen on bottom of leg, but pretty sure that is all clear coming up to impellar.I actually put a hose on the copper water tube and turned on hose and nothing came out the hole on leg.There is a designed hole in copper tube and water shoots out of it when hose is on.I have blown air into the hole on the leg and can hear it come out copper tube I believe.I would think city water presure would come out the hole in leg where it is supposed to, wouldn't you?

@@issui2 yes you can start it without any of the wiring on the boat. You need to make sure the kill wire is not touching the engine so it won't ground out the ignition. You can bypass the electric choke with your hand over the carb. Check your compression. You need at least 100psi on both cylinders to have a decent engine.
