In the Book of Jeremiah Chapter 35 the Israelite nation is living in blatant disobedience to the word of God. The worship of idols has supplanted the worship of the living God and the Lord is extremely offended and displeased. In wanting to present an object lesson of obedience to His rebellious people, God commands the prophet Jeremiah to gather the family of the Rechabites, the children of Jonadab the son of Rechab, into the house of the Lord (the temple) and invite them to drink wine.
Early in this message, one gets the impression from Brother David Brown that this is going to be another sermon on the evils of drinking alcoholic beverages. While that is a topic worthy of being preached before any Christian church congregation, Brother Brown reveals a more profound issue being addressed in this passage of holy scripture-how the Rechabites respond to Jeremiah's invitation stands in stark contrast to the way Israel and Judah have responded to the Lord's invitation to repent and restore fellowship with Him.
The Rechabites serve as an object lesson. The lesson being...the blessedness of obedience to the word of God.
