My father was a LRP 67-68 but he said he didn't go to Recondo School because some team members had to stay back and actually run missions.

I have a question you might be able answer, I've seen video from the Recondo school that shows some students who have what appears to be 550 parachute cord strung tightly between the front sight post and the carry handle of their m-16, do you know what the purpose/use of this was for? Thanks
