As a viewer (and only very casual runner) my problem with the calculator ban/unban debate was that it was allowed to do all the calculations in advance and store them in a massive spreadsheet and refer to this during the run, and this didn't count as using a calculator. But doing the calculation partway through the run was disallowed. In my eyes this is a major flaw with the ban as these are essentially the same thing, you don't have to waste time thinking and doing maths and can just read the answer off of a display. And while I appreciate how handy Ninjabrain bot is and have used it myself, and admire the runs that came from it, I can't help but feel it takes something away from the concept of speedrunning a game - the use of external tools to me sours the authenticity of it a little bit. I'm still conflicted.

I wouldn’t say he was one of the best, he just got an absolute god seed and he popped off and played it almost perfectly for the time. Lots of this game comes down to that 1 player who knows the strats gets a god seed and plays it perfectly, lots of the extremely talented speedrunners never get that luck since they weren’t that 1 in a million. Nothing against Brentilda, he’s absolutely legendary in the speedrunning community, but he definitely wasn’t the best for the time, especially with a 18:XX PB before his WR

I don't think calculators are fair, but I don't think we can ban them either. Bigger streamers have the most powerful calculator known to man, twitch chat. If the ban calculators, only people with a big enough audience will have a fair chance at beating the record, which is INCREDIBLY unfair. And we can't ban looking at twitch chat, because there is no way to definitively prove whether or not the streamer looked at chat.

I understand why speedrunners want calculators but I feel like any external help takes away from the sincerity and removes it further and further from reality, which is why I believe real time is the more important metric and even a chart wouldn't be available to normal people although it's impossible to prove. Like wouldn't that literally be a tool assisted speedrun? Using an external program to make it possible to get faster times.

I'll be honest. The calculator ruling completely killed any interest I had in Minecraft speedrunning and I haven't watched any runs since. To me, the community sentiment only changed to favor calcs because the community was tired of not beating Brentilda's record. Why else would such a unanimous decision get overturned only a few months later? It was a complete cop out decision, and it was sheerly because the community didn't want to grind to get insane RNG to beat Brentilda's record. Having a calculator tell you everything about your world goes against the whole reason people ran Minecraft random seed glitchless in the first place: no two runs are the same and the game requires good game knowledge since your routing is done on the fly. Neither of these are very true anymore. You don't need to triangulate your end portal, you don't have to blind travel, and you don't need game knowledge to navigate the overworld because you're never IN the overworld in random seed runs now. You either enter the nether by 1:30 via a village or ruined portal near spawn, or you reset. Same thing with exiting the nether. You use data from F3 to ensure your nether exit is always in the stronghold. There is basically no navigation skills required in the overworld sections anymore. And that skill expression was taken away because the community was too impatient to grind for a new record, or find new strats. So instead, they moved the goal post and changed the rules so they could beat Brentilda's record. Basically, I believe calculators would still be banned if Brentilda didn't get their record, and the unbanning of calcs was done sheerly because the community was too lazy to grind out a better time than Brentildas. It made me lose a ton of respect for the Minecraft speedrunning community. I've been a part of other speedrun communities (Super Monkey Ball as an example) where, in order for a world record to be beaten, new strats or glitches have to be found. In those communities, changing a rule like allowing a calculator would be seen as a cop out for not finding new strats. That's exactly how I feel about calculators. Allowing them was a cop out so the community could get better times without grinding as hard.

Hypermodern has been the meta for years now. No top runner plays villages unless they instantly see a blacksmith. Overworld still requires good navigation skills, I dont think calculators have anything to do with that. I think youre forgetting that it just does the math to find the stronghold for you. It doesnt tell you "everything about the minecraft world". You used "F3 data" before calculators too. Also, it's not just brentilda's run that caused calculators to be allowed. It was also influenced by the fact that there was a huge gray area on what should and shouldnt be banned. People were creating huge spreadsheets (3+ GB) to do essentially the same thing as calculators (also having stream chat get the coordinates for you was pretty common). It's also virtually impossible to detect if someone is using a calculator so banning them would likely cause many cheated runs to get into leaderboards. Also, I dont think comparing random seed runs with games with no random elements is really fair as they differ from each other too much. Not saying that allowing calculators was the right choice. Blaming it on Brentilda's run demotivating the community just isn't completely accurate.
