Before Jesus died on the cross, people sinned on a regular basis, and they sacrificed animals for forgiveness. The Bible tells us that Jesus death on the cross was meant to give us a better way. He came to bring righteousness to his chosen people. 2 Corinthians 5:21 tells us this: "For our sake, he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God." Scripture also says: 1 Peter 2:24 "He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness." Scripture also says: “And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness.” Romans 6:18. There are many people who call themselves Christians today who do not live any differently than people did before Jesus came. They sin on a regular basis just as people always did before. They believe they have been saved even though there is no distinction between their lifestyles and that of unbelievers. They believe Jesus made the sacrifice so that they can sin without a penalty and recieve constant forgiveness. This was not what God intended. The free gift that he offers is only for those who are obedient to living without sin. Hebrews 5:9 tells us: "And being made perfect, he (Jesus) became the source of eternal salvation to all who OBEY him," Deliberate rebellion against God was not acceptable before Jesus came: Numbers ch. 15 tells us: "But the person who does anything presumptuously, whether he is native-born or a stranger, that one brings reproach on the Lord, and he shall be cut off from among his people. Because he has despised the word of the Lord, and has broken His commandment, that person shall be completely cut off; his guilt shall be upon him." Also, we are told that deliberate rebellion today is still not tolerated even after Jesus died on the cross: “For if we go on sinning deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but only a fearful expectation of judgment and a fury of fire that will consume the adversaries.” (Hebrews 10:26). Jesus came to forgive sins and also to bring righteousness to those that he chooses to forgive. Most Christians deny that righteousness is possible. Without faith in the power of God to deliver us from the bondage of sin, they will not be able to enter his kingdom.

It seems to me the doctrine of indulgences has it's word-of-faith counterpart in their belief one can "sow a seed" ($$$) in order to obtain answered prayer from God.

No study of JUSTIFICATION should be made without 1 Cor. 6:11. This verse is absolutely imperative for understanding THE WILL OF GOD.

I noticed the second great awakening wasn’t mentioned. It was also led by a Presbyterian (Charles G. Finney) who did not believe that man was justified by faith…”alone”

Finney later repudiated the Westminster confession and admitted that he had not read it and did not agree with it. In other words, he lied in order to be ordained.

@@paullaymon5746 I had not examined it-that is, the large work, containing the Catechisms and Presbyterian Confession. This had made no part of my study. @@classicchristianliterature Your confused. Read the actual memoir. “After many such discussions with Mr. Gale in pursuing my theological studies, the presbytery was finally called together at Adams to examine me; and, if they could agree to do so, to license me to preach the Gospel. This was in March, 1824. I expected a severe struggle with them in my examination; but I found them & good deal softened. The manifest blessing that had attended my conversations, and my teaching in prayer and conference meetings, and in these lectures of which I have spoken, rendered them, I think, more cautious than they would otherwise have been in getting into any controversy with me. In the course of my examination they avoided asking any such questions as would naturally bring my views into collision with theirs. When they had examined me, they voted unanimously to license me to preach. Unexpectedly to myself they asked me if I received the confession of faith of the Presbyterian church. I had not examined it--that is, the large work containing the catechism and confession. This had made no part of my study. I replied that I received it for substance of doctrine, so far as I understood it. But I spoke in it way that plainly implied, I think, that I did not pretend to know much about it. However, I answered honestly, as I understood it at the time.” How is that lying? He told them that he he did not know much about it…and they still licensed him! He never studied it so he couldn’t at that time argue for or against it. He said their actual questions never came into conflict with his views.

@@paullaymon5746 word games. Bottom line - he was a Presbyterian in name only and not in conviction. He made up many false doctrines and after his “revival” years later, there was no abiding Christian witness. His contribution to Christianity is a cheap man made revivalism.
