The release of Pumbaa, Quasimodo and Yzma | Zeehondencentrum Pieterburen

On September 19th, seals Pumbaa, Quasimodo and Yzma were released in the Wadden Sea. They are 3 special seals, because all of them had something about their eye(s)! We hope you enjoy this video of their release.

Can these sight-challenged seals survive on their own? Is there evidence that this can work out for them? Just wondering. I suppose it is the best option to release them. I am a donor to your organization.

Thank you for your support Lisa! Seals are already adapted to swimming and hunting with little sight. If you would take a deep dive in the Wadden Sea, you wouldn't see much. The same goes for seals, although their sight underwater is better than on land. They use their whiskers to find their way and hunt for fish. Furthermore, our researchers who study the behaviour of mother-pup-pairs, see a blind adult female seal return to the same area every year. Here, the female seal succesfully gives birth and raises a pup every year.
