A brilliant presentation! The late biosemiotician Wendy Wheeler and I had several discussions about these topics. I am currently translating "Das Gesetz der Serie" (1919) by the Austrian biologist Paul Kammerer (1880-1926), the tenth chapter of which ("Die schützenden Ähnlichkeiten der organisierten Naturkörper") also discusses mimicry in terms of coincidences.
