This is an interview I conducted with Dr. Joe Henrich at the Religion and Science Colloquium hosted by the Center for Mind and Culture in March 2019. We talk about his recent article on the effect that violent conflict has on religiosity.

20 hours of work on this video, and I can't monetize it because it's about war. If you've ever considered donating to RFB, this would be a great opportunity! Here's the Patreon link and the PayPal link: www.patreon.com/religionforbreakfast | www.paypal.me/religionforbreakfast

Very interesting discussion. I did my graduate practicum on how social capital affects communities in disasters and I am hearing a lot of familiar language here.

This reminds one of cults that require members to give up so many things and even though it looks insane from far away, it's not validated through evidence that this can help it's longevity.

Great to see your portfolio expanding. Keep up the good work! You could have gone with: ReligionForBrunch But I'm glad that both "Religion" and "Breakfast" are still in your title, as those are central to your brand identity.

This information makes me reflect on the hyper-religious black population in the United States when compared alongside the trauma of continental Africans that are exploited to convert to religion when calamity visits there homes and nations. American history records the plight of the formerly enslaved African in America as; traumatic, exploitative, marginalizing, detrimental and oppressive. In my opinion, this study appears to substance to the secondary religious capture of traumatize African Americans.

Mundanely, it seems markedly anti-intellectual, if not anti-rational, not to allow monetization on a serious discussion of a serious topic. The algorithm and monitoring are failures if that's the case. I know not the Way of the Google$, hear there are changes being made, but have no expectation that better wisdomS will result, so PayPal it is. I may return with a few ponderings about Dr. Henrich's paper, esp. if I can locate a copy to read.

Nice video. Great job. I haven't red the study, but I wonder if the outcome of the war was taken into account. I can see that that could be also an important factor, who wins the war will shape the society that comes later. I think for example in our Spanish civil war. A secular progresive government + leftist and trade unions against a nationalist, conservative faction with strong ties to the military and religious stablishment. It does not mean at all tha the war was religious, as both sides were roman catholic. Nevertheless, religion was much more important for one side, and religion (or antireligious sentiments, in the republican side) was used as propaganda. Spain became a much religious country i'm prety sure. I wonder, if the war would have been won by the other faction, religiosity (described as in the video. Attending religious services) I think would have decreased in favour of other social expresions like political parties, trade unionism, social clubs, etc. Not contradicting the study's hypothesis, but adding a dimension that I find relevant. Maybe the study takes this into account, don't know. Cheers from Spain

Wars also turn people away from God because they see all the suffering and realise, God did not stop it!! As a direct result of WWI and WWII, Europe saw a massive decline in religious activity and church attendance. Examples you have given are of places that are still way back on modernisation and the majority of the population is rural or illiterate. Preachers and priests have a field day when the congregation is clueless and will believe anything that is told to them. In such places, preachers use war and loss / victory as a reason for holding on to their faith and asking God to help.
