I have had a ton of questions lately on reloading. The one I get the most is on progressive presses and can I begin there. Most books say its not a good idea. Remember..If you cant get the supplys the presses are useles. Do every thing you can to preserve our rights to keep and bare arms... Otherwise this information is usless..
This was drafted by Nutnfancy.
As you know, Congress is shockingly considering GUN LEGISLATION that will make enemies into millions of its citizens, breaching a trust long held. I urge to stand for individual liberty and trust in the citizenry, just like our Constitution affirms and clearly outlines.
I urge you with the greatest commitment to VOTE AGAINST the AWB and any other legislation that purposes registration and banning of so-called "Assault Weapons." These firearms are in tens of millions of households, held by good citizens, keeping the peace, and preserving their liberty. The percentage of criminal use of these guns is infinitesimal and statistically insignificant.
More importantly these proposed laws registering and banning this broad category of guns will have no affect on crime. As we saw in the CT massacre at Sandy Hook, criminals will steal their guns, ignore ALL laws, and in the end probably use other destructive devices to kill people (buses, cars, poisons, homemade bombs, etc).
The only effective solution to these killers is an immediate armed response, just like civilian Nick Meli in a mall in Clackamas, OR. With his Glock, he foiled a mass shooting, saved lives. An armed civilian stops these mass killings! ARMED TEACHERS ARE THE ANSWER, NOT criminalizing millions of good Americans. That will cause much greater problems. But this isn't about guns or greater public safety, or stopping the killings, it's about people control. This is much more ominous.
The fingerprinting, registration, and guaranteed future control of an owner of this type of firearm VIOLATES the Second Amendment. It is a glaring manifestation of an overreaching, out of control government...the very thing which our founders feared and wished to prevent. This destruction of the 2nd Amendment will have a domino effect. Other rights will also be attacked, weakened, and outright eliminated. In the future this could lead to civic unrest, deadly confrontations with law enforcement, and more.
This or other "assault weapons bans" will be unenforceable as well. In the end, only the criminals and the government will be armed. Is that what you want? In determining the course of this country this might be your most important vote ever. Firmly PRESERVE GUN OWNERS RIGHTS and accept no compromise. I thank you for your past support in this area; it's time to do it again as the anti-freedom forceS are always on the march. I will watch your vote will great interest and gratefully support you in future elections for your defense of our Constitution.
Sincerely,

I started with rifle then moved to shotgun, then revolver, and finally pistol. I remember the learning curve being manageable, but I'd been building and fixing stuff already. That really helped. Listen to this man's expert advice. It's sound. I'm over 60 now and this is downright fun.

I started on a Dillon 650 with .45 and since then have gone full bore with rifle and pistol 9mm to 308 and I love it! Right now my biggest short coming is small pistol primers (my own fault for slacking on the resupply) I wouldn't say it stopped me from range trips but I am much more aware of my inventory levels and what I can and can not afford to waste. Sadly I think you and Nutnfancy are right, we're in for a rough path here shortly, but we've been there before and we will survive.

OBX, love your channel and all your vids! People who are new, this man knows what he's talking about. Watch his other reloading vids. I started re-loading w a friend, but quickly found that I would be better suited to a top end press. I started w a 650 and I love it. I mainly load .223 n 9mm. Pistol is ridiculously easy relative to .223. Start w pistol. I wrote letters to my senators/congress folks. I received electronic relplies, but we must act to protect our rights. TJ is correct!

I'm a mechanical n aerospace engineer (MAE) and I had to do a large amount of research before I felt comfortable commencing high volume reloading on a progressive press. There is a lot to pay attention to simultaneously and the specs are fairly tight. That said, the 650 is a Cadillac and a great press and if you educate yourself thoroughly, starting on a progressive is doable. Case prep on .223 is tedious and crucial. Powder: Varget-rifle and Power Pistol , CCI #41, 400, 500 primers

Good vid. I started in 2014 on a progressive Dillon RL 550B. Started with 45 colt, then 44 magnum, then 45 acp, 9mm, etc. In total, I now load 6 different pistol rounds. It can definitely be done if you are paying attention. Side note for 45 acp beginners out there, watch out for crimped primer pockets. You will need a swage tool for those.

First of I want to say thank you for you great work in teaching all of us lessons on reloading, I have been reloading for about 3 1/2 yrs and I still learn some thing from your video's from time to time, second your right you can start with a progressive press I did, I started with a lee load master which is peanuts compared to your dillon but it was a good starter it made my head hurt a few times trying to learn to use it but that how it goes learning new stuff. Thanks Again God Save America

Thanks for the information and Video. I've loaded on a single stage for 30+ Years and only recently purchased a 550B which I reload .223, 45, 9MM and 380 auto on. All my other many rifle loads I still load for accuracy on my old Rock Chucker. I'm with you as far as using a single stage to begin, learning to load.

Hey brother. Thanks for a great, informative video. I am a new reloader but I do have 30 years of shooting, firearms experience. I am starting out on a progressive right now and to be honest at first I thought I made a big mistake. The truth of the matter though is if you really watch as many videos and speak to as many experienced people as possible, you can do it correctly and safely. I definitely don't think it's for everyone and had I known anything about reloading when I first ordered my reloader, I would not have gone with a progressive. I felt like I was kind of stuck with it and it had great write ups so I gave it a shot. I made sure I got just about every accessory that might be needed and studied, studied, studied. If you are thinking about getting into reloading, either take your time and realize that you can't over prepare or just don't get a AP reloader. Good luck to all and be careful. Thank you again for an excellent video.

As someone that started on that same progressive press and loading .223, I think you give solid advice. But if someone does what I did, which is ask questions, be patient, and test test test, you should get satisfactory results. Load a few, test fire, load a few more, test fire. Once you're sure you it set up properly and obtaining a consistent result, then let her rip. You end up loading 600 rounds in your first sitting only to discover you've set your resizing die too low and put a goofy bend in the neck, I guarantee you'll be sad.

Yes! I have slowed down on shooting and practicing because of the ammo shortage and how the only available ammo is marked up to ridiculous prices. Mostly because of those guys that hoard ammo and cause the shortage. People waiting at 6a.m. at Walmart for the ammo delivery just so they can buy it all up.. Yeah some locations are now only allowing so many boxes of ammo per person but they just get like 7 of their buddies to go with them and clear out the shelves. I own firearms that take 15 different kinds of ammunition and I try to keep at least 300 to 500 rounds of ammo per pistol or handgun and then close to 600 to 1000 rounds of ammo per rifle. I am looking at those same Dillon Precision reloading machines so I can possibly start reloading my own ammo and reusing cases than CAN be reused and save me a little money when I practice shooting.. Thats the whole point. To practice and keep qualified with all my different types of firearms I own. Not to sell or make a bunch of ammo to hoard. I want to be able to sharpen my marksmanship skills. It was so much easier in the military when ammo was cheap and at some times FREE.. We could shoot all day.. But now its time to start thinking about reloading.. If you have any advice I would love to hear it. My most used ammo types are 9mm, 38special, 357, 45ACP, 223/556, and 308..

A really good compromise between a single stage, and progressive, press, is a turret press. It's certainly not as fast as a progressive, but it's faster than a single stage. And it's MUCH cheaper than a progressive. I use a Lee "Classic" 4-holer. I like Lee, not because they're necessarily any better than the other brands, but because they bring back fond memories. My very first experience with reloading was as a teenager in the late 60s, with a "Lee Loader." Ah, sizing cases by whacking them with a mallet!

It is SO long ago since I reloaded, because after the 'great disarming' in the UK the ass kind of fell out of 7.62 and 9mm for many people... Progressive machines can hammer-out a finished item quickly IF all stages are perfectly tuned AND they stayed that way. The scope of actions needed to create a good round has so many places where quality-control can fail (or be improved) that the non-progressive method worked better for us. Sunny summer holidays and my dad's Wamadet... sigh... :O)

First, let me say that I don't disagree with what was said regarding 'tough times for gun owner', BUT you unscrupulously turned a question answering video, "THE RELOADING TRUTH. PROGRESSIVE PRESS. CAN YOU START THERE", into a whining, and crying video bringing your political views into it. If you want to solicit letters, emails, petitions or the like, FANTABULOUS, but do it with that title, don't bait them in with what they believe to be some prophetic insight on what press to start with and why, and switch to the rant and solicitation. You spent more time, yes I timed it, talking about the amount of supplies you have/need, and the previously mentioned rant than why you don't think someone could handle a progressive w/rifle, which was literally 2-3 sentences. (-‸ლ) (Face-palm). Additionally, whether someone starts with a hand-loader (with a hand tool), single stage, turret, or AP, they have to have all of the same basic supplies anyway. Why not just say, "If you can’t get ALL of this, don’t start reloading at all", which is basically what you said, at least then it would be straight forward and not cryptic. The amount of supplies you showed was irrelevant, no beginner is going to need or attempt to buy (roughly) 50K primers, 250lbs of power and cases upon cases upon cases of brass and projectiles. I understand that this was made a couple of years ago, but I have NEVER had issues getting any supplies, either locally (in VA), via internet or gun shows. Let’s be honest, a LARGE majority, if not most, reloaders, whether old hands, or new prospects are either current or former military, LEOs, firefighters, people who shoot a helleva lot, or pro shooters. This being said, these are ALL attention to detail oriented individuals, and providing they remain that way, should have no issues starting with an AP. This is true unless, of course, they buy crappy gear (certain press, dies, powder, etc.). This is just my opinion, and like everyone, am entitled to it. We all know that we all have opinions, just like assholes, and they all stink at some point, but this particular one, just happens not to be one.

I started with the Dillon XL 650 reloading AR-15 ammo, with absolutely zero issues. I really don't see what all the bullshit that people say start with this or that, and reload this or that. What you are saying makes no sense at all! If someone wants to get into reloading and own long guns only, you are saying they shouldn't reload! I say hogwash!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You reload what you shoot, not what someone else thinks is best. And if you can read, comprehend, and follow directions, then starting with a Progressive shouldn't be an issue in the least!

I worked as a die-maker. I think I can handle what we called "in die automation". Set each station as if the others did not exist and things will fall in place pretty well (but probably need some tweaking). Move slowly as you begin to actually cycle the press, checking ALL stages with parts in them with each cycle of the press. Check the primer depth. check the powder drop ... check, check, check. Every time the die cycles, something gets changed. Check the freshly completed step, sure, but check all the other steps, too. When you crank out a good cartridge, slowly crank out another and another until you know how things should feel and sound when they happen right. If anything changes, if it sounds or feels 'different', stop and find out why. I'm going to start with a prog die. I see starting with less as a way to waste money climbing a ladder when I can step out on the top rung to begin with.

1:56 Did you even remember where you put that old thing!? Loved the video OBX, as always. I would humbly suggest that people also have a stash of Full Uppers chambered in calibers other than .223/5.56. A few years ago 7.62x39 Russian Brass was on the cheap while .223/5.56 was still expensive and a lot of it ended up in the cache. Think about AR-10 (.308/7.62), .22 conversions, 9mm conversions, etc. Do not limit your tool to take one caliber, that is a mistake. Thanks Again!

I started reloading brand new, only 9mm for now, on a old Hornady Pro-jector in November for practice and USPSA. I even had to fit all the new LNL parts onto it, including the case activated powder drop AND modified Hornady's bullet feeding die to feed moly/lead bullets, and I had no problem starting to reloading on a progressive. People who say you need to start on a single banger are either old and did so themself before progressives where around, or are just completely mechanically stupid.

That's a good policy for stores to sell a lot of presses while someone moves up from single-stage, to turret, and finally to progressive, but it might just be a big time and money waster. If I feel I need to shoot 1400 rounds per month, I should not bother with a single-stage reloading press. That would be like wanting to ride a Ducati race bike and starting with a motor scooter and wasting a fortune while moving up a few CCs per year. Better to get the Ducati and learn with some caution.

I started reloading for my old Marlin 336C in 30|30 on a single stage RCBS press. Easy to learn the basics. Traded in my Marlin for a new M77V .220 Swift. And, since .220 Swift ammo was only sold by Norma, and was rare at the time, I HAD to reload .220S. During that time, I got into pistol calibers too. When I started shooting service rifle matches, I went to the Dillon 450. It's a semi-progressive press, so if you can run a single stage, you can run an old 450.. Now considered junk.

Totally agree with everything you said. I just got the RL 550b last month and love it. For the rifle I am still doing my sizing step on my single stage and then after trimming it goes to the Dillon. I would have made a lot of careless mistakes if I went straight to the Dillon. The RL 550b does feel in a lot of ways like a single stage though. For people just getting started now it would probably be a better use of money to stock up on supplies and just get a entry single stage kit.

I've reloaded quite bit of shotgun shells on my Hornady progressive press. I am considering reloading .45ACP and 9mm...not just for a cost savings, but also as a hobby to share with my 14 year old son. We enjoy shooting together and I think this would be a great addition to the activity that we enjoy. Would your opinion be that I would be capable of jumping into a progressive Lee or Dillon vs using a single stage system? I was really hoping for a local retailer that might have some of this equipment in stock that I could see and feel before buying...I live in Northern Indiana but do not know where I would go...all of our gun stores are just guns and gun supplies, not reloading of any kind. Thanks for your input, nice video!

There is NO reason why someone can't start to reload on a progressive press. The NRA teaches classes on safe reloading, and as long as someone is cautious and starts with handgun ammo, they will acquire the knowledge they need to move on to rifle reloads. If I want to make some dressers or a desk, I'm not going to start with handsaws if I have the money for better equipment.

Yes I am worried about ammo. I have hand written and typed several letters to all of my congressman and senators. I didn't get back into shooting firearms again until I broke my back while racing road bicycles as an elite level racer looking to turn pro. Now disabled, shooting is one of the few things I enjoy doing. I recovered somewhat from my back and neck surgeries. I started with a dillon 550, and I would recommend it. The many steps it takes for a single stage is definitely a deterrent, and the 550 is a good way to learn the "feel" of reloading. Because you have to manually spin the carousel, it is like having three single stage presses welded to each other. It is harder to mess up. And you are right! START WITH PISTOL! Do not load rifle until you are experienced. 223 is a pain in the ass to load. Buy the stuff to load 223, but load 9, 40, or 45 first.

After stockpiling a few thousand rounds of ammo... Then stock pile some primers some primers and FMJ bullets. And maybe some smokeless powder. And do police your brass and after you have over a one hundred count of brass. Take a tray of one hundred of primers and start reloading... This will keep up your stockpile and reduce your coast of shooting. Support the First Amendment and the Second Amendment to protect and defend the Constitution. Thank you for the great video ! tjl

I only want to buy once, so I am looking to a good system. I am not going to start ASAP so I can wait for the supplies to free up again. I want to buy the reloader before the prices go crazy.

I do disagree with the starting with single press as well. I started with progressive read the books. I prefer rifle on single stage, with all the extra steps in rifle I find it easier.

Within an hour and a half or so of removing my Dillon XL 650 from the box, I had 4 sets of dies set up and dialed in, and had produced 10 rounds for each caliber, and had already test fired them all! It is not rocket science or brain surgery! Buy what you want and can afford and start reloading. Read, then read some more, follow directions laid out in the reloading manuals, and you will be fine!

+Ohio Prepper Agreed! Reloading is not rocket science, there are lots of books and resources to get a novice into the hot seat very quickly.. all it takes is a little research. No use wasting $200 on equipment when you will be wanting to replace it after the first 500 rounds you make to a turret setup. Might as well spend the $300-500 on a turret and enjoy it all. A few things to note, hand primers are one thing that are a big debate.. I probably feel more comfortable doing primers by hand only because I can visually verify before I drop them.. unlike in a turret it passes through to the end very quickly while sight unseen.

The biggest problem now is finding powder suitable for pistols. I haven't been able to find any at all. But I've found a reasonable replacement: Blackhorn 209 black powder substitute. Unlike B.P. & Pyrodex (I HATE Pyrodex!), Blackhorn is pretty much noncorrosive. It probably isn't suitable for semi-autos, but in revolvers, produces velocities very close to those you can get with smokeless. One caution: it's difficult to ignite, so you should use magnum primers.

Used to reload in my Grandpa's basement gun room, but never really knew the ins and outs of the settings. Just bought a Dillon 650 and I think I'll just set every station up as if it were a single stage press and go from there. I can't really see how you would do otherwise.

You are on the right track. Once you have done that, crank a few through SLOWLY, checking every operation every time it happens. Then go ahead and make ammunition.

I know this is an old video. with that being said, I would recommend a Dillon BL550 to a new reloader. Its basically a glorified single stage that is fully upgradable to a manually indexing progressive RL550B press when you are ready.

I started with 308win on a single, added 454casull and 45colt then 338LM. now I am going to buy a progressive and it will be 9mmluger, 45acp and 223rem on it. the only things I am worried about is primers going off, squibs, hangups, having to disassemble because of some crap and excessive extracost.

I would think that when a guys spends north of 2 grand in these presses, you may want to invest in a 100 dollar electric case prep center for the rifle rounds. Kind of counterproductive to have a fast loading tool but spend hours hand trimming rounds and using a single hand swager. Regardless it is a nice setup you have.

I had the first dillon model when it frst came out in 86,87. you gotta pay attention, but you need to start with a standard turret press and learn the trade from that, soyou can know wtf you are doing in the progressive loaded. you have to pay attention though. get a lyman or RCBS press, a decent powder measure, the Spear, rcbs, or lyman books on it are pretty good, just start simply. i loaded for nearly 25 yrs wit great success, and the last decade or so was on the Dillon progressive. but use a manual one first.

I followed the advice of a guy like you and and wish I wouldn't have. I wasted money on presses and caliber conversions I never recovered because someone said you need to start like this. I no longer listen to people I just do what I want and get it right the first time without wasting my money because some expert says you have to do it this way. Find a experienced reloader running the press you want to run and become his best friend and let him teach you how to do it. It's all about the proper workflow, learning it and following it. Also learning the feel of the machine.

I stand by what I said, as it is my experience and that of many I know. I started out handloading with a Lyman turret press in high school in the early 70s, got the first Dillon progressive in the mid 80s when I was shooting pistol matches. I loaded many thousands of rds of many cals, also had a federal ammo manufacturing lic (I forget what class that is) and loaded many cals for hunting and for various policed depts. and individual cops. I was just making a recommendation, and if it was listened to, and you found somebody to help you htat had experience (as you correctly suggested), you shouldn't have had much trouble.

I was lucky. I had a great mentor and cut my teeth first on basic pistol, then after years of doing that he taught me rifle. Very precision kind of guy, super detailed, all done on single stage one cartridge at a time, go to the range and analyze and then load some more. Change and shoot some more, on and on. Then I bought a dillon and learned progressive and it was a piece of cake. It's kind of like learning to fly. Most people don't start out with a 747. Great advice.

Ha..., well I was new to reloading around 5-6 years ago. And after watching Obxsolwind's video on reload .223/5.56 on 650, he convinced me. Used the 650 as a single stage until I knew what I was doing. Didn't move to pistol until several years later. It can be done. Just take your time and be safe.

I hate to be critical, but re-loading ammo is not rocket science. There is plenty of reading material out there and anyone that has some math sense and some mechanical ability will find this relatively easy. You make it sound like landing on the moon. As far as what ind of press someone wants to start with that should be driven by their finacila situation and the ability to follow instructions and put something together. Lastly I live in So cal ammo hard to find, however primmers, bullet molds, shells, poweder all very abundant things are not as drab as you make them out to be. 3 of us that shoot together all have the Dillion as our first loaders none of us have experienced any problems its not that complicated not even long gun ammo is too hard for us.
