haha I don't actually read a book a day! I just released my review videos for Booker every day, but I read them over several weeks. I usually average about 6-8 books a month I think 😊

Result! The word that springs to my mind about this book is denial. As he thinks about what he achieved with his life he begins from the standpoint of a successful butler and slowly realizes he was in denial about the nature of his ‘boss’ and also his relationship with the housekeeper. Very subtly done. Artist of the Floating World I like even more - it’s basically the same story but the Japanese context made it more interesting to me. The Unconsoled is my favourite Ishiguro by far but is quite a different book - a long entangled dream.

so glad you enjoyed this book, I think it might just be my favourite Ishiguro novel. I also experienced that change of heart part way through the book, something clicked and it instantly went from being average to something pretty special

Glad you enjoyed. It is one of my favourite books. I love the style of all Ishiguro books: the slow reveal and focus on memory. This book trumps all others though. Just want to shake Stephens/Stevens (I forget which) at times and other times really feel for him.

This book epitomises the character of British servants in that era. He is so repressed and a deferential order follower. I am not surprised at his snobbery. The class system was entrenched even when I was growing up. The book marks the decline of the British aristocracy post war. All the grand houses were being snapped up by the Americans with their different ways.

One of my favorite books. The movie is also excellent. I just finished A Pale View of Hills and it's been rattling around in my head all week. I would love to hear your thoughts on it.
