தன்னம்பிக்கையையும், விடாமுயற்சியையும் உணர்வுப்பூர்வமாக பின்பற்றும் எவருக்கும் வானம் வசப்பட்டே ஆக வேண்டும் என்ற இயற்கை விதியை தெள்ளத் தெளிவாக உணர்த்தும் ஓர் அசாதரணமான கதை. 1880ஆம் ஆண்டு ஜூன் 27ஆம் நாள் அமெரிக்காவின் அலபாமா மாகாணத்தில் உள்ள தஸ்கம்பியா எனும் சிற்றூரில் ஒரு குழந்தை பிறந்தது. அழகாகவும் நல்ல உடல் ஆரோக்கியமாகவும் இருந்த தங்கள் குழந்தையின் எதிர்காலம் ஒளிமயமாக இருக்கும் என்று எல்லா பெற்றோரைப்போல் அந்த பெற்றோரும் நம்பினர், விரும்பினர். குழந்தைக்கு இரண்டு வயதுகூட நிரம்பாத தருணத்தில் திடிரென்று காய்ச்சல் வந்தது. அது என்ன காய்ச்சல் என்பது அப்போதைய மருத்துவர்களுக்கும் தெரியவில்லை குழந்தை இறந்துவிடும் என்றுதான் நினைத்து வருந்தினர். ஆனால் பெயர் தெரியாத அந்த நோய் குழந்தையின் உயிரை பறிக்கவில்லை மாறாக அந்த பச்சிளங்குழந்தையின் பசுமை மாறாத உடலில் இரண்டு கொடூரங்களை நிகழ்த்திக் காட்டியது. முதலாவதாக அந்த மழலையின் செவிகள் செயலிழந்தன. அடுத்து அந்த பிஞ்சுக் குழந்தையின் சின்னஞ்சிறு விழிகள் ஒளியிழந்தன. பேசிக்கூட பழகாத, தன் பெயரையே கேட்டறியாத அந்த பிஞ்சுப்பருவத்திலேயே கண் பார்வையையும், செவிகளையும் இழந்தது அந்த பச்சிளங்குழந்தை. மேலும் தெரிந்து கொள்ள
