I was still at school when Laserdisc hit UK shores.....they were very much a niche market here and very hard to get hold of in the early 90's. I remember going to a friend's house when i was around 15 and we snuck into his older brother's room to watch my first movie on Laserdisc which was 'Army Of Darkness'...i was blown away!
@Fedaykin2414 жыл бұрын
@Zaranyzerak I would add to that as well. The media industry initally expected DVD to be a niche like Laserdisc and actually stated that they would only produce a limited amount of films in that format. When they realised that people were happy buying their complete back catalogue of films the shops were soon filled with DVDs.

Great video. I own about 135 LD(s) and 5 Laserdisc players. I used to rent them back in the 90's. I normally rent the current technology (like BD today) and purchase the old...when it goes retro (price collapse). Lately I've been buying about 5 LD(s) per month through the mail and have not received any damaged ones...although bent covers are common.

I honestly don't know much about laserdiscs. It was during my younger age. Kind of odd though because my family were the types of people that enjoyed keeping up with the Jones' but they never got into laserdiscs. The first time I saw a laserdisc was by grandfather. He took out a case about as big as yours and started watching one day. It was really cool. I thought they were records at first.

LOL! I can't believe you got the package right in the middle of doing another video. Awesome. I always see random Laserdiscs at Goodwill nowadays for under $5. Once I found Army of Darkness, but yeah....no LD player so why get it? :P Still, I think it's cool we had a home video format that was the size of a damn record. It's funny, cause whenever I find them they're often mixed in with the old records at Goodwill, and I've heard people refer to them as the soundtrack....hah...

The main reason to keep the Elite Nightmare on Elm Street is that the Laserdiscs like the Friday the 13th series is the onloy way to get the full uncut unreate versions, So the Nightmare disc is Uncut the Bluray and dvd's are all cut

@puckbond007 The criterions that were on laserdisc and didn't make it too dvd can by found on wikepedia if you go to the criterion page, then go to list of Criterion Collection Laserdisc releases, and if you look on the right if it didn't show the spine number then it didn't get released on dvd.

Awsome collection thus far. This may shock you a bit Sean, but I have met someone who actually worked on the opening sequence to Howard the Duck. But he's better known here in his native England as being the creator of a couple of cartoon shows; his name is Mike Jupp and I have his autograph.

Nice collection! I bought a couple of days ago a LD player with 100 movies. Almost can't wait to get it! The player (Pioneer CLD-1750) can take both PAL and NTSC movies, so import won't be a problem I hope. Here in Norway LD were never officially released, so everything is import actually. Which also makes it rare to find. My father just laugh at me, saying it is a stupid and useless format. I think it looks interesting. Also nice collectibles now. :-)

Have you considered getting an LD player to breath some life into your collection? I picked one up on Kijiji for about $80 (10 LD inc.). I have it hooked up to a CRT TV via S-video and the picture is quite impressive. To tell you the truth I still prefer LD over DVD (haven't adopted BR yet). It's more of an "event" when watching an LD and for some reason the sound and picture have a more "filmy" feel to me than DVD. Besides, don't you just love the sound of that big disc spooling up?

What would you say the going rate for laserdiscs is at now (or the last time you were buying/selling)? Last week I came across a number of great titles (Terminator 1 & 2, Goodfellas, The Godfather, The Cable Guy, Dumb and Dumber) but the store wanted $7.99 for each single disc and $14.99 for the doubles. To me, this would seem a little overpriced for collector pricing, but it seems insane to see it at stores like Goodwill or Salvation Army, especially when the records are $1.99 each.

I've never seen the 3D sequence from "Freddy's Dead in 3D", I know, sounds weird, but my DVD edition didn't have it, no glasses included. But my question is, did it work, was it convincing good 3D, or more a gimmick?

The deleted scene from the CAV special edition of Ghostbusters on Laserdisc thats not on DVD or Blu-ray is the now legendary; "Fort Detmerring scene". The Egon one with Janine IS on the DVD version. didn't i comment on this before, can't seem to locate my old comment here. Anyways love your DVD reviews Zaranyzerak.

Only reason Id play a dvd,hddvd or bluray is because my laserdisc equivalant is way to valuable. Im not playing Iron Giant or any Jonny Quest and especially Transformers:Five Faces of Darkness thats easily worth 200.00 now cause of a print run of only 614 laserdiscs.

+Zaranyzerak 6:53 I believe you're referring to The Nightmare Series Encyclopedia disc in the Nightmare On Elm Street DVD set from 1999. That disc actually has an Index where it lets you access the features in a clickable menu if you didn't want to do that maze game (which is called the Labyrinth).
