Wow, just goes to show that "I guess you had to be there". That mournful twelve string guitar intro, the raw, ramshackle singing and playing definitely spoke to me also in my early twenties. The Replacements would have to smooth over some of the edges to reach the Top 40, (I think they did with "I'll Be You") but for me this was one of my favorite albums of the 80s, and close to Top 10 all-time. Just about 40 years later this song is still incendiary.

Love the Replacements---these guys don't get enough love. They ranged from loud thrashing to really poignant and heartfelt stuff...this song was of a time and place that spoke to a lot of young people. During the conservative Reagan years, bad economic times, threat of nuclear proliferation. Kind of like now, could apply too unfortunately---student loan debt, pandemic economy, war in Europe, climate change.

Replacements songs are like, you listen to them a handful of times, and then they destroy your soul, and then you listen to them a handful of times, and then maybe they put your soul back together. For instance, Can't Hardly Wait is an upbeat song about touring, but it started out as an alternate take on The Ledge, like the guy from Here Comes a Regular takes a detour on his way home from the bar and jumps off a water tower. Unsatisfied is the sound of a poet baring his soul.

Things like this makes me both appreciate and yearn for Lester Bangs. Sometimes I forget that rock criticism at one time aspired to be a legitimate pursuit. While often sardonic and permeated with black humor, writers like Bangs took their craft and the medium they were critiquing as deadly serious. They demanded the same originality and creativity that earlier critics had demanded from a Hemingway, a Picasso or a Miles Davis. They realized these people were being treated as demigods and felt that they should at least try to justify the adulation. They wielded their wit and words like a stiletto slicing and dicing any that they felt were poseurs, corporate creations or simply coasting on past glory. Reading those writers was often more entertaining and insightful than listening to the records they reviewed. Those days are long gone and I doubt that we will see there like again.

At this point they were very young already suffering from alcoholism and on an independent label. It was just beginning and already falling apart.
