Another Game Boy follow-up to an NES game appears this week, and it's just as compromised and frustrating as you've come to expect. The Rescue of Princess Blobette consists almost entirely of recycled material from A Boy and His Blob, but it's a much smaller game - and a more limited one. And slower. And more cramped. And it sounds a lot worse. But on the plus side, uh… well, it won't melt down your Game Boy, probably. So that's something.

I high five my KZbin every time you talk up Balloon Kid. That game is a gem. These Blob games baffled me when I was a kid. They had all the elements of something I would enjoy, but the NES game was so unfair and impossible, that I avoided the game boy one entirely. I'm glad WayForward eventually delivered on the potential of the premise.

I really enjoy the A Boy and His Blob series. Like you said, I liked the dad jokes of the beans too. They seem arbitrary at a glance, but as a little kid, I was able to see some logic in them which helped with memorizing their effects. The Wii version at least showed you what bean did what, and gave you a limitless supply.

I always wondered who David Crane was. In hindsight, I could've looked him up, but it never felt that important. Not when it was attached to a game I didn't like.

I, for once, enjoy more the GB version. I always thought that the "alien" part in the original game was beyond terrible, and having a reduced, contained map works better, it's easy to explore and know where things are. It's easier and shorter, but it is more fair, i think. One thing: if you throw a jellybean, the camera follows it. You can use that to know what's below you in some instances.

I remember playing the original NES version briefly at a friend’s house as a kid. We didn’t get the jelly bean concept, and couldn’t figure out what to do, and moved on to something else. Subsequently, the GB game passed me by. I did buy the Wii reimagining, however, and while I didn’t get very far with it, I did find it quite charming.

Love that the Blob will spawn in and push the Boy off a ledge or what not to his death. That is the game mechanic WE NEED BADY THESE DAYS! Self serving maniacal AI to thwart our every effort! Good blob, good!

I saw this game's entire map in one of those game guide books of the time and always wondered what was up with that seemingly small map that appeared half unused. Guessthere wasn't more to it.

Hey Jeremy, any plans in the future of doing a best/worst list of all these Game Boy games you played? It would actually be useful for new people interested in playing the library since you're experiencing all of them.

remember when david crane was trying to get a kickstarter going for a pitfall 'sequel' and came up short and proceeded to blame gamers?

Good thing that the remake on the PS Vita solved that problem of wtf the beans do by displaying the name and what they do lol

The Imagineering Simpsons Game Boy game Escape From Camp Deadly isn't like the NES ones at all, you'd never guess it was made by the same company. I like it a lot better actually.

I liked that game, actually. I suppose in hindsight it was a bit average, but it was one of the first games I played and was able to finish. Although I never worked out how to beat Rebound Rodney (although fortunately he was skippable).

I liked this one a lot more than the NES game. The world is smaller, sure, but the level design feels a lot better, with actual puzzles to solve and a more linear way to victory. The NES game is just a big cave with randomly scattered diamonds. I played the Game Boy game first and was really disappointed by how empty and uninteresting the NES one was.

Eh? The NES games has puzzles… they're almost exactly the same as the ones here.

It had a few at the very end, in the evil king's castle, but the extreme majority of the game is spent exploring a giant cave on Earth that doesn't really have anything all that interesting in it. Princess Blobette just feels a lot more compact and well designed. Bigger isn't necessarily better.

Kinda disappointed you don't spend more time on the Wii/PC game, but I guess Wii Works will have to wait until *checks calendar* 2050.
