And imagine how things would have gone down if it actually happened. Romans and Jews would have either directly witnessed it or heard about it from credible sources and would have convinced the majority of people that Jesus was a divine being, there would have been then no separation between Judaism and Christianity, they would have become one in the same, and Romans as well adopting it as a state religion at the time, not hundreds of years later. There would have also been a great deal of contemporary accounts of this miraculous event, with word of it spreading like wildfire. But none of this happened because the resurrection story is made up BS.

To religious people who believe in the *fictional* Abrahamic god YHWH/Yahweh/Jehovah/Allah, please learn his origins. He was originally a lesser god in the Canaanite pantheon and son of the chief Canaanite god El. Yes, the *fictional* god of the Israelites and Christians is the same *fictional* god of the Muslims as well - the Abrahamic god. ------------------‐----------------------------------------------- *Although the biblical narratives depict Yahweh as the sole creator god, lord of the universe, and god of the Israelites especially, initially he seems to have been Canaanite in origin and subordinate to the supreme god El.* Canaanite inscriptions mention a lesser god Yahweh and even the biblical Book of Deuteronomy stipulates that *“the Most High, El,* gave to the nations their inheritance” and that “Yahweh's portion is his people, Jacob and his allotted heritage” (32:8-9). A passage like this reflects the early beliefs of the Canaanites and Israelites in polytheism or, more accurately, henotheism (the belief in many gods with a focus on a single supreme deity). *The claim that Israel always only acknowledged one god is a later belief cast back on the early days of Israel's development in Canaan.* *It is generally accepted in the modern day, however, that Yahweh originated in southern Canaan as a lesser god in the Canaanite pantheon* and the Shasu, as nomads, most likely acquired their worship of him during their time in the Levant. *Yahweh in the Canaanite Pantheon* The biblical narrative, however, is not as straightforward as it may seem as it also includes reference to the Canaanite god El whose name is directly referenced in `Israel' (He Who Struggles with God or He Who Perseveres with God). *El was the chief deity of the Canaanite pantheon and the god who, according to the Bible, gave Yahweh authority over the Israelites:* When the *Most High [El]* gave to the nations their inheritance, when he separated the sons of men, he fixed the bounds of the peoples according to the number of the Sons of God. For Yahweh's portion is his people, Jacob his allotted heritage. (Deuteronomy 32:8-9, Masoretic Text). The Canaanites, like all ancient civilizations, worshipped many gods but chief among them was the sky-god El. *In this passage from Deuteronomy, El gives each of the gods authority over a segment of the people of earth and Yahweh is assigned to the Israelites who, in time, will make him their supreme and only deity; but it is clear he existed beforehand as a lesser Canaanite god.* Yahweh, according to Amzallag, was transformed from one god among many to the supreme deity by the Israelites in the Iron Age (c.1200-930 BCE) when iron replaced bronze and the copper smelters, whose craft was seen as a kind of transformative magic, lost their unique status. *In this new age, the Israelites in Canaan sought to distance themselves from their neighbors in order to consolidate political and military strength and so elevated Yahweh above El as the supreme being and claimed him as their own.* His association with the forge, and with imagery of fire, smoke, and smiting, worked as well in describing a god of storms and war and so Yahweh's character changed from a deity of transformation to one of conquest. *As the Israelites developed their community in Canaan, they sought to distance themselves from their neighbors and, as noted, elevated Yahweh above the traditional Canaanite supreme deity El.* They did not, however, embrace monotheism at this time. The Israelites remained a henotheistic people through the time of the Judges, which predates the rise of the monarchy, and throughout the time of the Kingdom of Israel (c.1080-c. 722). At around 59:03, how plausible is it that Jesus' robe (for which the soldiers allegedly cast lots) could have been removed from Jesus before scourging and all that, and that Jesus was either naked or put in simpler, less desirable clothing to be crucified? Or do verses like Mark 15:20 make this an insurmountable difficulty for my proposition in reference to John 19:23-24? It seems like this is a very good objection that Pearce makes and I had never even considered before.

That bit seems more to me like an added detail meant to either jump up how important Jesus was or else to cast further aspersions on the Romans. Depending on whether the focus is the importance of the clothes of Jesus as a divine figure or the uncouthness of Roman soldiers essentially gambling over the clothes of a dead man. Heck, it could even be both. A quick search didn't bring up anything on what Romans tended to do with prisoner's belongings after they'd been executed. It seems notable to me to have that particular detail though, given that most crucifixions didn't involve leaving the body up forever. It was usually returned to the family after a few days. Just speculating but I don't see why that wouldn't also apply to the deceased's former belongings, bloody tattered rags or not.

Firstly you are putting your family on the line. Your wife may leave you, followed by weekend visits from the children, ostracised from the church, your workmates may be also. In fact, kiss your whole life goodbye. And that's why many Christians are reluctant to 'Go there'...And on the other side. Imagine your partner coming home and said. The argument that the guards at the tomb who witnessed Jesus and then ran away and were never heard of again seems to be the norm in the ancient world. All the great battles, all the witnesses to charismatic great dudes like Caesar and the rest, every tuning point in history we have absolutely zilch from the thousands of stressed and excited soldiers who saw those evens through in their witnessing front row seat. I've always wondered about this. I think the best support for the Gospels comes from Zechariah 6:11-13. Joshua was high priest when the Jews were returning from the Babylonian captivity and Zerubbabel was governor. Here in Zechariah 6 he is given a golden crown and it is stated, "Behold the man whose name is the BRANCH!" Now all of a sudden it starts to talk about the Messiah who will branch out and build the temple of the Lord. He will be a priest who reigns on the throne. He will hold both offices. After the order of Melchizadek (Psalm 110:4). And it says here that this high priest Joshua shares the same name as this Messiah. Joshua in Hebrew is pronounced Yeshua and in Greek it would be Jesus. So was the New Testament written to be read as fiction or to be taken literally?
@rainbowkrampus3 жыл бұрын
Neither. Mythologies serve as stories which create a shared bond within a community. Their veracity isn't really considered outside of apologists. And apologists only come into being when people start asking about the reality of these tales. I've seen people, more than once, bite the bullet hard on whether or not they care if their religion is true. Fiction or reality is the wrong framing. What matters is that sharing these stories cements a person's position within their group. As tinkle tink (god I love that name) mentions, as these documents were being written they were serving a purpose for two audiences. The problem, as I understand it, is we have no evidence for what the priests/church leaders were considering. We just know that this sort of thing is pretty common. For religions of sufficient size there's almost always an inner circle who know the "deepest lore". But even then, that "deep lore" doesn't necessarily comport with anything in reality. Dig into some modern cults to see how this sort of thing pans out. People who decide to start messianic or apocalyptic cults aren't usually playing with a full deck.

The whole Bible should be read as fiction and mythology.
@inreallife213 жыл бұрын
@@joycesky5041 I get that, but what I’m questioning are the authors’ intentions. I don’t understand if this was all written to be read as myth originally and has since gone on to be taken literally by religious fanatics or if it was written to be read literally to intentionally deceive people into accepting a new religion? Or some other reason?

It's a Roman Empire post-war- 66AD-73AD-political propaganda satire. It's a clever Pro-Roman Empire/Emperor worshipping document that also mocks a defeated Jewish rebellion. Actually, quite remarkable.
@intermediaryfossil71633 жыл бұрын
@@inreallife21 Ultimately, in the literature, to get a defeated Jewish rebellion to call a Roman Emperor their "Lord". It's a wicked satire. The "King of the Jews" is even comically "pressed" in a wine press. There is a running gag of cannibalism by the defeated Jewish rebellion in it as well.

@mouthpiece2003 жыл бұрын
@Skydaddy Myth-Busters That's fine, anywhere to find a good debunking of him? Some of his prophetic claims would be very compelling if taken at face value, but not everybody has time and energy to fact check every claim. He's either got divine inspiration or he's a major charlatan - not really any room for inbetween.
@mouthpiece2003 жыл бұрын
@Skydaddy Myth-Busters Many of the things he mentions are not really prophecies but rather signs and wonders he claims have already happened. I wonder if some secret society has arranged those things to happen on purpose, or if he's just lying through his teeth about verifiable events. He's very pro Israel - maybe they arranged some of those events to look like god is behind the creation and legitimacy of Israel. Even if he's wrong on some things it technically wouldn't exclude him from having supernatural powers, as even the Bible says that evil has its powers and false copies. I just like to evaluate all possibilities.

Judas had a week long meditative experience of Christ as per the gospel of Thomas and the gospel of Judas (divergent evolutions of the original): the original gospel of Judas would be Q. It compelled rebellion because of "shall not taste death". Even Boudica in Wales may have been inspired by the original gospel of Judas. Then Saul went around putting down rebellion (usually work to rule, most likely). Then it happened like Ralph Ellis says. The cannonical gospels tell the story of the story: Judas, Paul, Mark, Matthew, Luke, John; in that order. There is mind/brain dependence but; a community in truth has brains, doesn't it?

Paul goes all in on the resurrection in 1 Cor 15...which as I recall, even skeptics agree Paul wrote. He's very plain that the resurrection is bodily and the linchpin for the entire belief in Jesus. I'm astounded at the unfamiliarity with the very text he is critiquing.

Considering the fact that the gospels were not assembled into their final form for several generations after the supposed life of Christ, what is to distinguish the resurrection accounts from ghost stories or even some sort of furtive plot to fake the death of Jesus, he having spent to all accounts a suspiciously short period suspended upon the cross to have resulted in death? Then also the gospels give every indication of having been concocted by an ignoramus who knew nothing of the geography of the holy land while reworking paganistic motifs from Egyptian, Greek and Persian mythology in which resurrected demigods born of the sexual congress of gods with human females supposedly virginal and therefore impregnated miraculously or at least by alien gynecologists working in hovering flying saucers after abducting their experimental subjects in beams of light…

Lissa M Yes! It is currently a garbage dump just outside of Jerusalem, but it is where the Israelites formerly sacrificed their children to Molech by fire. It will be manifested as a lake of fire at the conclusion of the Tribulation, and Leviathan and Behemoth - the beasts of the sea/abyss and earth, respectively - will be the first thrown into it at the Second Coming. 1,120 years later on Judgment Day - Yom Kippur in 7000 AM - Satan, the fallen angels, and those judged to be wicked will be thrown into it as well vanquishing ALL evil. So, I don't know Biblical history (nor the future), huh? lol #HaDerech
