The rancher father who you said was "going for an oscar" was a fairly well known character actor in the 50s through the 70s, Neville Brand. He was a highly decorated WW2 vet and was in 136 TV shows and films, usually westerns, film noir and war movies. He often played a very menacing heavy but he was the lead in the tv western series Laredo which lasted two seasons in the mid 1960s. The quality of cast that was put together for the film is quite impressive, most are past their prime but there are quite a few well known actors here.

I can't emphasize enough how grateful I am for that episode, because I was looking for that movie for 20 years without knowing its very generic title! Now I can finally rewatch it! It's an unusual blend of sci-fi and slasher which was just stuck with me for all these years, with no answers. It's shocking how vividly I remember this movie considering I was like 7 years old when I saw it: an ID request I posted on one forum had like 80% of the plot right down to a description of the first human casualty. I was actually impressed by the movie enough that I tried my best to do a replica of that lightsaber-style knife out of some random acrylic thing. The movie was and is from perfect, but it has enough charm and creativity to stand out. I think I'll also actually try donuts and beer. I did weirder.

Actually turned out very helpful when, at a museum exhibit with my folks, the film in our camera broke and used my dad's jacket to cover the camera and film, stuck my arms through the sleeves, and fixed it. In the class, we had what was basically a zip-up bag with sleeves, or a jacket without neck and waist holes, so you could unload your exposed footage without exposing it to light and get it ready to develop.
